Speaking of Fallon, an old friend of mine who went to Bishop Fallon was in LOVE with Gayle McCormick, the lead singer of Smith.

Check out this video, and you can see what got that poor Catholic boy all atwitter.

A nugget from 69 (oops).

Good one, and I found another great stiff at the same time: "Tell Him No", by Gayle McCormick and Smith, remaking/covering The Zombies tune. Another one of those gender bender covers, as it were, a la "Hey There Lonely Girl", by Eddie Holman remaking/covering the Ruby and The Romantics tune.

The video is lip-synched but clearly, Ms. McCormick had great set of pipes. Hey! A great voice. Behave! And that young man from Bishop Fallon had good taste.

Tsk, tsk!

So..roll into the arena with Andrea True Connection - More, More, More. That had substance. Something you could sink your teeth into. The beat that is (hey!!!!) Is there a video of that? - (the song that is) :D

I'll say he did...in fact, punch up Gayle's "It's a Cryin' Shame" at the same resource, and check out the cover of her '72 album.....whoaaaaaaaah.....

Gives me an idea for another thread...which I will not do....."One hit wonders you'd like to see in Playboy"...think of the possibilities!

Boys, boys.....behave!

By the way.......if over the years we went on the air and played this many shitty songs......how did we ever thing that these were The Golden Days Of Radio?

The evidence says otherwise, me thinks.

Ask and ye shall receive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTsTIS-8III Back when Disco used to be king. Of course "used to be's don't count anymore, they just lay on the floor till we sweep them away". Andrea True Connection to Neil Diamond. What is this Legends? ;) ;D

To the extent that I won dance contests in the days of disco I won't go too hard on the genre. Of course, I am also extremely confident that such will not be repeated in any fashion, under any circumstances, regardless the genre or venue.

Careful! I don't agree or disagree (disclaimer). But, ironically, watching "Idol" for the first time this season last night..I noticed the opposite. With an entire session based on this genre...and then a "special segment" line up of Freda Payne, Thelma Houston, and KC of Sunshine Band fame attempting to perform live...I have to wonder. Granted Simon's eyebrows were up alot, but if your point is true, I highly doubt this production would be dabbling in these waters.

T'was I to whom I referred when I said such would not be repeated. That was so long ago that there are only two ways such could ever be repeated. It's better if it isn't, although I know there are those who feel that since they missed out on the party they should get a whack at it too, playing dress ups and all, and finding any number of ways to express themselves.

"HARROWing story!" I get it, JPB!!! CKLW's landmark transmitter site was (and is) in Harrow, Ontario!!! HAW HAW HAW!!

I suspected you'd pick up on that, RCS, even though it was a bit abstruse if not hokey and too hip for the (rest of) the thread. Exxxxxx-cellent! Now remember, "the sparrow nests in the cornfield." Wear khakis and a dark blue WNOX t-shirt and sit in the corner booth, back facing the kitchen.

More on point, was it WDRQ that took the first bite out of CKLW... '74-'75, thereabouts?

In keeping with the thread, "Son of Scorpio" Dennis Coffey and The Detroit Guitar Band.

please God........let it stop!

At this juncture - it appears that it won't stop until every song ever to hit the air is mentioned in some way!! :D

Look at it as the filler to the TOH news! Or, someplace to relax and enjoy a Starbucks while perusing the content! Or being in the company of anonymous friends that have more content then Jimmy Fallon ???

That deserves a stiff honorable mention as a Filler to the TOH News - for that category I respectfully submit, to be played in a Spotmaster Cart machine, recorded over the splice and dubbed tight so it burps on cue up, "Washington Square" by the Village Stompers from 1963.

...and another pre-David Clayton Thomas BS&T track, "Sometimes In Winter" sung by Steve Katz.

The talk about 70s AOR ("All Over the Road") radio brought to mind "Its A Long Way There" by the Little River Band in '76 and "Holdin' On to Yesterday" by Ambrosia. Back to the stiffs, Ambrosia's David Pack with his solo release of "I Can't Let Go" from 1985.

A Can-Con nugget submitted for your approval...

Frank Mills (no, not Music Box Dancer - his most known hit circa 1978), but from early in his career, circa 1972....

If You Love Me Love Me Love (why did you ever leave me)?

I have an idea for a song that someone could post if
this thread ever ends:

The Last Song - Edward Bear

All the songs that've been mentioned we could have our
own internet radio station;
STIFF radio - WSTF.

And may I add:

Piero Umiliani - Mah Na Mah Na.mp3
The Uh-Oh Song Part 1 & 2 - Nutty Squirrels.mp3

JPB, WDRQ didn't help - nor did the general migration of music audiences to FM - but IMO the Canadian FCC did far more damage to CKLW than all the stations competitors did, combined. Recall that The Big 8 was much more about content and lifestyle than it was about music sweeps. It was truly The Motor City Sound - a giant community voice roughly akin in its time, to radio, the internet, cable and satellite all rolled into one. CKLW was frequently rated in the top three stations in Toledo and Cleveland as well. That's why CKLW had a 1973 cume of 16 MILLION - or roughly the equivalent of the entire worldwide audience of XM-Sirius. On ONE AM station.

Hey, somebody just hit on the theme: "backtimed instrumentals which we played going up to news!" Got a few.

Midnight in Moscow - Kenny Ball
Mexico - Bob Moore
Music To Watch GIRLS (?) By - Bob (Oooo!) Crewe
Swingin' Safari - Bert Kaempfert
The Stripper - David Rose
Love is Bleeeahh! - Paul Mauriat
Java - Al Hirt
Anything from Herb Alpert (227 assorted Tijuana Brass LPs)

Oh...wait....how could I have forgotten the timeless Incredible Bongo Band......?? ::)
