Another format change in Pensacola?

poledo said:
I haven't spent any time listening to the new Groove 107.3 but every time I've tuned in they've been playing 1990's pop songs... i.e.: Tiffany and Michael Jackson... but they do have that upbeat "urban" sounding DJ. I just don't get it. Are they competing with WABB or Jack 104.1? The music appears to be programmed in the iPod shuffle "Jack FM" style... I though people were leaving radio for iPods, so why are they copying the iPod style/theme with these new radio stations (Jack, i100, Groove 107.3)?

107.3 put ESPN on their HD-2, but that doesn't do many people any good. We are seriously lacking sports (AM or FM), FM news/talk, and Rock n Roll stations around here and I expected the recent flips would fill those holes... yet they went in the opposite direction.

This sent me a strong message that I do not understand modern pop culture. I just can't believe people enjoy listening to these radio stations.

Well, keep in mind that if you're a guy, you're the wrong demo. Think Women 35-44 (with 5 years' worth of "slop" on either side to bring in W30-49) and score in both W18-48 & W25-54. They've got TK to bring in all the male ad buys. But the real money has always been in the female ad buys. Trouble is, that's where all the competition is--Country, AC, CHR.

I don't know whether this is an Alan Burns project, but it does remind me conceptually of his "Movin'" format that drew a lot of attention a few years ago, though not a whole lot of success. IIRC, Burns's World Headquarters is out at Perdido Key, so it wouldn't be a huge shock if he sold CC on the idea--nor would it surprise me if Alan has a ton of research backing it up. Nothing like living in a market to give a great researcher a thorough understanding of the place.

Yeah, I know the radio companies are targeting women, but come on... TK-101 would be the only FM station in Pensacola targeting 35 year old men with 96.1 The Rocket and 99 Rock being the only male oriented out-of-market stations reaching us. The other 37 stations are targeting 45 year old women.

What am I supposed to listen to? Corporate radio has limited my choices so much that I don't even have to scan the dial anymore. How is that not a wide open format hole?

Cumulus can't find anything that works on 100.7 or 104.1... so please give us some rock-n-roll. Heck, just simulcast or copying Tallahassee's Gulf 104 on WYOK would be nice.

Don't forget that both news-talk & sports-talk are targeted at guys, too. If you've got three rockers, a sports-talker and all the news-talkers they can cram onto an AM dial at your disposal, you're drowning in choices.

Most people listen to 3 or 4 radio stations, tops--and watch a maximum of a dozen TV channels, no matter how many hundreds are on their cable box. Which 3 or 4 stations top your list?

Can't be greedy.

No, No No No !!! You guys know nothing so why dont you stop bickering. Let me begin and please read attentively before you just happenly will debuke my comment.

Ok, 107.3 the Grove was a phenomonal move, in my personal opinion. Now, for the over 1 million people who live in the listening area, some would agree, others disagree, and of course, those people that just could care less or could 'give a damn' while they listen to their iPod. Ratings wise, probably 107.3 the Grove will do well and it was what the PD wanted, that is a more female and focused young audience. How well will the Groove do? Well, it depends on the number of listener ratings and the personalities or also known as "jocks" who run or should I say, will run the station. You guys astoundenly already criticize a week later that this station is bad or 'not your type'. That's a shame. As I say again, its about what the listeners want- not what you want. Now, I did not see this flip comming. I was driving in Mobile and I heard Just Dance on 107.3 and thinking to myself, "hmm..this is odd, it sure is not 70's or 80's type of tunes that you would hear on this radio station, Gosh- has this song already debuted as a classic already?" Well, they were 107.3 the Groove. And I welcome you to the area. Somthing fresh to this lacklaster radio market. Well done Clear Channel, well done! Not to say that My 107.3 was not good. Basically the only time I listened was Disco Stu's "My Saturday Night House Party"!

To all these haters out there, Hello- when a fresh, new station debuts on a radio dial, they are just going to be playing Non-Stop music until they start promoting adds and money comes in to bring in jocks. They might not be the "top" station but they will be possibly intact with the Groove in Atlanta. Its a Clear Channel, and so on. Plus, we all know Atlanta is such a huge radio market so dont cry cause your so called "fm talker or "classic rocker" did not show up like it had to too. Im sure there was a legitimate reason., And in response to robfb guy, have you checked out 106.5 or WNTM Fox News Radio 710 lately, what do you call them? Sounds like a lot of "talk" to me....

Now this is when it gets interesting...Who will live out of the top 3: WABB, i100, or 107.3 the Groove? If I had to chose what station out of 97-5,100.7-or 107-3 will go first, its going to be 97.5. This heritage CHR is feeling very ill...They're trying to recover, wait- Or are they? Heck, its so crazy that its insulting to me to listen to the sweeper "The Morning Guys" when there is only ONE guy and one girl. Thats a shame and somewhat SAD. And the voicetrack sounds horrible, and even their sound. 107.3 and 100.7 on the other hand has the signal and strenth to do well in terms of ratings and feeling the missing gap in attracting back the radio listeners in the Mobile/Pensacola area. Now, I dont know the statistics on whose listening to who and what not, but again, they have the signal and a better potential to succeed. Obviously, both of their main target is to CONTINUE to sweep out WABB to their casket knowing the Mobile/Pensacola needs a better CHR/Rhythmatic to fill in that hole. And that makes perfect sense, 100.7 and 107.3 want to 97.5 WABB dead and gone. Sounds harsh, but its true.

On the last note, The future for this market is bright BUT c'mon, Clear Channel needs to fix Lite Mix on the other hand cause they are horrible..They play the same stuff all the time...I got an idea, Why dont bring Disco Stu to Lite Mix on Saturday nights.? Why Dileah 7 nights a week?? Maybe its called, poor quality programming. WOW!!!! Its beyond me when Soft Rock 94.1 does the same thing and even Majic 93.7 in Gulfport...Im so lost here! Who is running that sLite Mix anyways??. Mary? Nope. Mason? Yep. I even visited the station, they are so lost. Mary Booth was nice to talk to but I would keep her and take everyone else out. She has a friendly sound on the radio. Mason- eh??? Mason who....? Why dont the Soft Rock Channel from iHeart Radio just run it with the djs and and what not and just having like 3 times the trafic updates, not every 15 minutes. Its so annoying. I dont think New York City gives that many traffic updates! But I think I made my position on this issue. Lite Mix BLOWS

Thanks for your time and attention,

Alex

Hey Alex. I agree with you as far as 1073 the groove goes. I love the station and have been listening to them since they have signed on. I think they are trying to accomplish two things. One is to pull some listeners from magic 106 and 2 is to splash some cold water on I100 before it can gain any legs. As far as lite mix think office space that's what that station is all about. Delilah like Tesh is cheap radio u can through on with little overhead at night. With these type of radio stations it's all about morning and afternoon drives any way's.

It's the Groviest!

Alex, you're right. 107.3 the Grove is... uh, grovey.

And Trock, you're right, too. The Grove is all about office space. And it's all about morning and afternoon drives.

That would seem to clear up all issues regarding WOW 107, New Rock One Zero Seven, Cool 107, My 107, Your 107... and now... The Grove!

???

I was referring to Lite mix 99 when I was talking about office space. Judging from u calling it "The Grove" that u don't particularly care for the station. lol I have no love for CC but I think this station is a breath of fresh air.

Actually I was kinda poking fun at Alex for calling it "the Grove" instead of "The Groove." And I just sort thought it was funny that--regardless of the station cited--you declared that it was ALL about one thing--and then ALL about something else. See, "all" is one of those words that means... uh, never mind.

When you've gotta 'splain the jokes, it's time to go.

But, hey, you've been a great crowd. Don't forget to tip your waitress!
