Any insight on the numbers?

I don't know what Vinnie and Cook's demo's are, but every caller they get seems to start off by saying "I've been watching the Pirates since Kiner was playing..."

Lilly might actually be bringing the average age down a little bit.

I'm not a regular listener, but I really haven't heard many geriatric callers to The Fan. Given that the main shows have multiple hosts, they're a lot less dependent on callers than the shows on KDKA-AM are.

Are they, Boss?

Take, for instance, "Seibel, Starkey and Miller." Every day at 5:40 p.m. they do a bit where they essentially just let fans rant and name songs.

The hosts offer no opinions, they just let the callers take over.

I would submit to you the way the shows on The Fan are structured even the shows on the station with mulitple hosts are dependent on callers calling, with the possible exception of the morning show.

At least a solo act on KDKA-AM could do something with a hard hitting monolouge or a good guest if the lines weren't lighting or were offering less than interesting takes.

What most national shows have figured out is that callers aren't good radio. 90% of the listeners never call, and of the 10% that do, maybe 10% of those are actually entertaining to listen to.

That's a 15-minute segment in a 4-hour show, and they hang up on half of the ranters. That show is not caller-driven.

The money shows (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) are not caller driven. That's why they pay three people to do the morning show and three more to do the afternoon show. The days of Myron Cope having an extended conversation with callers, long enough to say "bye now," are over.

The only show heavy with callers is middays, and that's because they don't book enough guests and the two hosts can't stand to interact with each other. And I'll bet that changes when the talent contracts expire early next year.

The only problem with that is that the midday show has the highest ratings on the station.

That's because of a lack of competition relative to facing the DVE morning show, or Madden in PM drive, but the fact remains they have the best numbers.

Actually, they pay 4 in the afternoon if you include Hathhorn .. although Colony does have an expanded role.

Hatthorn's not part of the act, and he's splitting time between AM and FM for part of his shift. BTW, rumor is Colony could be bumped out of the morning show.

If so would they move Hatthorn to mornings and Colony to afternoons? In my opinion, I think Colony would do great in the afternoons.

People not currently on the air who might be interesting additions to the Fan:

Guy Junker
Ellis Cannon
Jim Krenn

Jim Krenn, Ellis Cannon and Gregg Gionatti would make a good fan morning show in my option

From what I heard, they're thinking of moving Colony to evenings, the spot vacated by Jon Burton. They'd like to hire Eric Hagman for mornings, strictly as an update guy, not part of the show.

Ellis Cannon was in a serious car accident a while back. I don't know the state of his health. He talked to CBS when they were putting The Fan on the air, and they weren't interested.

Thor Tolo was in the building last week to visit friends.

Callers can be very good radio, but they have to be ruthlessly screened to keep the boring, senile, and idiotic off the air. Once they get on, anyone with a lick of intelligence hits the button, and then the only people left in the audience are the boring, senile, and idiotic, which produces more callers of the same caliber.

When I say "ruthless" I mean absolutely ruthless. It is difficult to find call screeners to work for minimum wage when they're more busy with their cell phones and trying to figure out how to get a job in TV, but it can be done. You just have to be ruthless in your hiring and monitoring, too.

And the best of the national shows that do utilize callers have figured out the "ruthless" part.... Limbaugh is the best example. Of course some of my liberal friends don't believe that they go to that much trouble and just insist the callers are all plants.

Any caller who says, "thanks for taking my call", or "long-time listener, first time caller" should be banned from the air for life!
