Are the FRESH stations AC?

If I'm called Lite----not sure I'd be playing that one. I know the definition of lite is different from even 5 years ago but I'd be extremely cautious on rhythmic type product.

If you test it and the target audience accepts it, where's the issue?

So many complaints about radio are along the lines of "safe, stale, predictable" et al, yet when a format continues to evolve to keep pace with the changing members of the target demo, it's going too far afield?

Then I think you should reconsider your postioning.

I would agree. Staying true to your brand is extremely important. If WRCH feels they need to evolve, perhaps the word Lits should disappear.

Again, if the audience determines it fits the criteria, you're true to the brand. Brands evolve over time. They may stay true to some overarching themes, but the customers/audience changes, and what was once too far afield becomes the next generation's core tastes.

It was during the weekend I heard Lite 100.5 play that song. Other then that WRCH stays pretty soft. I feel that song was meant for 96.5 TIC and got mixed up into WRCH's computer. WRCH sounds pretty good compared to some AC stations.

The stations calling themselves Lite which are more uptempo than the one in Miami really need to get rid of the name. And then we need stations to actually play Lite music--everywhere.

One reason is that this format is forced on us in stores and so-called professional offices. I was in one office hearing Rick James' "Super Freak". Unbelieveable. No, the station wasn't Lite but it was traditionally lighter than the one using the name. Across the steet a drug store was playing "Muskrat Love". I think I've mentioned the drug store in the Muzak topic. I spent some time on the phone with them and they finally said the music changes according to who surveys show is in the store at the time.

I just thought I would add....this is a playlist from earlier today of a station I mentioned earlier, WSNY/Columbus, who is extremely traditional for an AC in 2011 (and from what I've heard online, a very good one).
I don't see how anyone can listen to this mess. This isn't middle of the road. It's all over the road. And off in the ditch.

I vote for WLTW to drop the name (they did once to New York's 106.7 and that backfired). I noticed the song "Only Girl In The World - Rihanna" is on their playlist.

CBS programs good branded Lite stations:
101.9 Lite-FM - Baltimore, MD
103.7 Lite-FM - Dallas, TX
Lite 100.5 WRCH - Hartford, CT

Agreed, but a bit besides the point. If your AC's target demo in your market gives the thumbs up to a given title, there's not an issue playing it. Tastes evolve, and what falls within a general, broad format name will as well.

I'm no expert, but I would think the traditional AC's (KOST, WLTW, KODA, WLYF, WSNY, WDOK, WLIT, WBEB) are probably more 35-54 while the Fresh stations are a broader 25-54 and their biggest appeal is to people in their 30s.

I see your point about stations sounding stale and predictable, but now it seems AC stations are taking it to the other extreme. The local AC station in my area plays Red Hot Chili Peppers and play what seems like every other song is less than two years old. There's ways to 'freshen' up the playlist without playing out of place music. Throw some hits back into light rotation that has been essentially off the air for several years, etc. I know it's more complicated than that, but JMO.

Lady Gaga, Taio Cruz, Katy Perry, etc. sound out of place on AC station, but The Script for example, doesn't sound out of place.

The AC station that was the more conservative of the two where I live played "I Love Rock and Roll" and the song Katy Perry sang at The Grammys.

"I Love Rock & Roll" was a huge hit in 1980! 31 years later, it doesn't matter how much edge it has, only that it doesn't turn off too many people in the demo.

But on the "soft" stations, yes it does matter. I don't care how old the song is.

I don't think you're looking at this the right way. If you have a station billing itself as "Soft Rock" and you play "Unforgettable" or "What A Wonderful World" and your core audience responds in a positive way, the fact that neither of those songs is any kind of "Rock", doesn't matter, only that they work for your audience. Adding an edge doesn't change the basic concept There are many songs that, in the past, Hot ACs wouldn't touch but are now in regular rotation on even conservative Mainstream ACs..
