rock will return to 102.7 hopefully before the big summer kickoff weekend
If Shore Alternative pulled the plug, and they were an
HD station, then that leads you into a particular direction where this genre is going. There's a better chance of The Shark tweaking more current than 102.7 returning as rock.
I consider that move not to be an example of alternative rock becoming less viable, but rather an example of Millennium's well-documented financial struggles. Look at it this way: their flagship station, New Jersey 101.5, is only live 3/4 of the day. Rumors persist that they are looking to sell the station. An HD2 like Shore Alternative couldn't have been profitable even with its dedicated following, so it was likely the latest in a string of budget cuts that they have made over the last few years. Hmmmm ... maybe MedianJ/Walter Sabo was on to something after all?
I would rather see modern rock on a station like 103.7 WMGM or Millennium's own SoJo 104.9. These stations reach into Ocean County, and would be popular enough to show up in the Monmouth/Ocean ratings book. It's something worth considering: SoJo has been underperforming for some time, and The Shark has long delivered numbers that don't justify its position on a flamethrower signal like the one it currently sits at. It could do just as well on the smaller 102.7 frequency, while a modern rocker or WOND-AM could benefit greatly from an increased presence and lack of competition on the stronger 103.7 signal.
