Atlantic Broadcasting/NJ Stations SOLD! Winner To Be Announced Today (5.5.11)

How can they be the mystery winner if they're asking for compensation which the article says doesn't go to the winning bidder?

Very bun-ny! ;D

But seriously, let's hope whomever becomes the new owner of this cluster cuts the mustard for dance music fans.

rock will return to 102.7 hopefully before the big summer kickoff weekend

If Shore Alternative pulled the plug, and they were an HD station, then that leads you into a particular direction where this genre is going.  There's a better chance of The Shark tweaking more current than 102.7 returning as rock.

I consider that move not to be an example of alternative rock becoming less viable, but rather an example of Millennium's well-documented financial struggles. Look at it this way: their flagship station, New Jersey 101.5, is only live 3/4 of the day. Rumors persist that they are looking to sell the station. An HD2 like Shore Alternative couldn't have been profitable even with its dedicated following, so it was likely the latest in a string of budget cuts that they have made over the last few years. Hmmmm ... maybe MedianJ/Walter Sabo was on to something after all?

I would rather see modern rock on a station like 103.7 WMGM or Millennium's own SoJo 104.9. These stations reach into Ocean County, and would be popular enough to show up in the Monmouth/Ocean ratings book. It's something worth considering: SoJo has been underperforming for some time, and The Shark has long delivered numbers that don't justify its position on a flamethrower signal like the one it currently sits at. It could do just as well on the smaller 102.7 frequency, while a modern rocker or WOND-AM could benefit greatly from an increased presence and lack of competition on the stronger 103.7 signal.

I'll go even further with an educated guess. If you tried to listen to Shore Alternative on certain HD Radios, it simply did not work. WJLK-HD1 works just fine, but WJLK-HD2 (when still active) just buffered/played/buffered/played...and that was within visual distance of the tower. Millennium probably thought spending the money to correct whatever problem they were having was throwing good money after bad, and with no viable way to program on the HD2, felt that running a web-only radio station was not the sort of thing they were willing to continue to fund.

So some of the alt-ish stuff has segued to The Hawk (note that http://ShoreAlternative.com redirects there) but Millennium is not the right place for the format.

1st of all let me say I think justice has been served!, JVC / Northwood and the rest of them tried to scam the place from the start and it all came to an end!, Also I agree with d21ofnj, He makes a very valid point that since shore Alt. is gone and that was only internet and HD, Think about what will happen to radio, Wild is going to most likely change but if it dose I have NO idea to what rock is just not going to work, Maybe a "B101" for the Jersey shore would be good idea... But that's a hard market to be in and I wish the new owners luck!

I'm glad to see that I was wrong...and that these local radio stations will go back to being owned and operated locally. Looks like good people at the helm. I wish them and all the employees who went thru hell the very best. Good Luck!

"Longport Media, a newly-created entity backed by A.C. attorney George Miller who says he wanted to keep the stations local. “A lot of people involved in the stations are local icons of the community, and I wanted to keep the local flavor,”....we can only hope!

Has anyone heard as to whether they will sell off any of the stations to get some money in the money so to speak? I personally feel they can get make a hefty profit by dumping a few of the weaker performers and keeping the core performers.

It can be very difficult running five radio stations.

An owner of a single station can dominate in any market. A great example of this is Jerry Lee's WBEB - B 101, Philadelphia. All his efforts go to making that station a top performer.

Considering the actual potential value of the stations (remember that when I was doing traffic in the late '90's, WMGM alone was a million-dollar-biller) I don't think any of the stations need to be spun off. If any are, it will probably be 1490 WBSS. I doubt Wild will be spun off, and there is no way WTKU, WOND, or WMGM would.

Re: Atlantic Broadcasting/NJ Stations SOLD! Winner To Be Announced Today (5.5.11

They could sell one of the stations to Millennium so they can simulcast NJ 101.5

Millennium is already at its limit for FMs. No company is allowed to own more than 4 FMs in the market, except for Equity, since they were grandfathered in when the market definition rules were different.

I hope wild keeps the current format and add more dance. Is getting very ineresting how Millenium radio also sold at the same time and bought by another company based in Los angeles Oaktree Capital. I woner what will happen with sojo, wfpg and other stations, very interesting.

For Millennium/Townsquare, look for SoJo to flip, WFPG-FM to stay put, major changes but not format change at North-Jersey-7/80 (which is how I refer to them since they don't care about anything south of exits 7 and 80).

For Atlantic, I stand by my statements. WMGM stays rock but is retuned. WOND makes minor adjustments but stays 99% the same. WWAC fine-tunes. WTKU is the wild card. WBSS could either stay or get spun off.

"WMGM stays rock but is retuned..."

Adding 90's music to the Shark's pond?
