Auction 109 results for Arizona

Estrella' Broadcasting LLC's 94.7MHZ C3 proposal for Blue Ridge is now under review by the FCC after Estrella had augmented their application package with a detailed description of the Blue Ridge CDP. The place is a community of about 550 folks in a private property enclave surrounded by a National Forest. Pictures of fire halls, community buildings, churches were provided as proof. (This was the original Overgaard allotmentfor Auction 109.)

The C3 signal's 60dBu contour Willows at best. I am not sure if there's an upgrade path to C0/C1 status to reach Flagstaff. Time will tell.
 
Under my radar, the Estrella's Auction 109 winning was refiled for Kearny, Arizona back in February. This propsed Class A on 105.1 at 800 watts would have a 60dBu contour hitting much of Florence. Estrella's application notes that Kearny lost its sole commercial FM station when KZLZ moved to Casa Adobes (metro Tucson).

This will be a definite upgrade for the licensee if grsnted.

In Sells, the *only* programming that matters would be programming targeting the Tohono O'odham Nation members.

How many would tune away from KOHN-FM at 91.9 FM? I'm going with 'not many'.

Kearny...with some bleed over the mountains into eastern sections of Florence?

The San Pedro River valley covers an area that 40 or 50 years ago would have brought a pretty healthy listener base. With much of the source of money dried up (copper mining), I wish them well in getting an audience out there.
 
Curiosity made me run a Longley-Rice scatter plot on the proposed Kearny station. It turns out to be a smart deal. While KFNN has a translator on 105.3 pointing northeast, the 105.1 signal should reach most of Mesa with a 43dBu stereo-quality signal. Crazy indeed but a milliion folks fall into this overall stereo zone The only real shadow area is towards San-Tan Valley. Now if Estrella could figure out how to turn it into a C3 then they'll really have something.

In a study I did in conjunction with the Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation's national sales department research group about 15 to 18 years ago, we looked at diary returns for "fixed location" listening in ten markets out of the top 20 in the US.

Hundreds of thousands of diary entries were inspected.

80% of all such listening was inside the 70 dbu contour. 95% was within the 65 dbu contour. The remaining 5%, when randomly inspected, were found to have at least a 65 dbu signal using a Longley-Rice projection.

So a 43dBu contour is, commercially, almost totally useless.

Is 43dBu the minimum standard for a stereo-quality signal?
 
Regarding Florence, it seems they're not the only ones. Tucker's Cochise filed paperwork to move KFMR to nearby Central Heights-Midl from Virden, New Mexico. The FCC has yet to act on this one I believe.

My uncle used to be the District Manager for APS during San Manuel's copper heyday. One of the better mining towns of AZ. I haven't been down there in years but had heard that Magma (mining company) was selling off the homes to retirees. Did that not happen?

That happened around 30 years ago. I looked at those houses in the early '90s, when the company put them on the market after the smelter closed and most of the Magma employees had left. About 3,500 people live in the unincorporated San Manuel census-designated place (2010, couldn't yet find 2020 CDP stats).

I go over into the San Pedro River valley every once in a while - some terrific Sonoran-style Mexican food places over there to enjoy, along with the nice ride.

I'll have to keep that frequency in mind for the next time I head over that way.
 
Third time is the charm? I have lost count by now but perhaps it's four moves if you add in the original Auction 109 Overgaard allocation.

Headline:

Estrella today filed for an upgrade of KGXL 94.7 Blue Ridge from C3 to C1 with 10kw ERP atop Mormon Mountain. This will put a 70 dbu signal over all of Flagstaff.and Sedona.

For 70 dBu community of licence coverage the consultants had to resort to the alternate Longley-Rice calculation. Still, quite an upgrade if it gets approved.

Keep in mind that a huge amount of research has shown that over 95% of home and work listening occurs within the 65 dbu signal. And, despite what many posters here think, over half of all listening takes place in those locations.

And since Class A and Class C stations are not protected beyond the 60 dbu contour, looking at the 43 dbu areas is not commercially productive.

And, since advertisers who use ratings buy markets, not pieces of them, coverage of just a small part of the Phoenix market means very low ratings and just about zero buys based on numbers.
