B 94 / Star 100.7

That was a joke. Younz guys have no sense of humor.

But really, I don't think you can play both sides of that equation on a station like the X. For whatever gains you'd make in females, you'd drive away some of your core male numbers and not gain anything. And trying to make anyone work with Madden would just be a dumpster fire.

If there was an FM signal out there that was really tanking right now, sub 2-share, I'd say a new rock station would be the ticket, it would force the X to pick a direction. But you only have 5 owners in the market..... CC's not going to compete with itself; at CBS, Star quietly bills well and as far as theB is concerned, CHR is a priority nationally; Renda only has WSHH; Steel city is fine with the Bob/Q combo; and the Frogs are inadequate facilities to be full-market standalones. The only overlap I question with them is 103.5 and 104.3, but neither reaches far enough east. So who would change?.... (DON'T say Star.... the 12+ numbers are not the story)

None of this is going to change until the FCC blows up the ownership requirements next year and shakes about half of the market loose all at once.

P4L, I agree with every single word you said about the X driving away females. I know this is going to sound lame, but I think of the huge amount of females (I am 40ish) in my high school that listened to DVE instead of B94 - and then when you translate that into what's going on nowadays, it's the polar opposite.

Then again, this might be the fault of the current day music just as much as the station. It's one of those things that's hard to determine the real cause because there are too many variables.

Thanks for mentioning WAMO. I listened to their stream and discovered a song that I love "Epiphany" by Chrisette Michele. Nobody plays that song where I live.

The 5AM hour is interesting on WAMO, a mix of Urban AC and Gospel.

Everyone had some valid points on all of their posts. K Rock did something a lot of stations today won't do: play artists nobody has ever heard of. Case in point, Danko Jones "Lovercall" and Tony C and the Truth "A Little Bit More". The biggest problem with any music formatted station is that there is an enormous group of PD's and GM's who are stuck in 1974. Most rock stations play the same old Black Sabbath and AC/DC that they have played for over 30 years. Where are all of the new rock bands getting airplay? Where's Mastodon, The Veer Union, The Sword, Eagles of Death Metal, Lacuna Coil, The Parlor Mob, 12 Stones, Jesse James Dupree's Dixie Inc., and countless others? The corporate mechanism has stations to this impersonal status where regardless of what the format might be, there will be a song by either Creed, Nickelback or Train that will play.

Radio needs to do something in order to keep listeners away from their iPods, MP3 players and from Music Choice on digital cable. Radio needs to go back to the days when David Sarnoff almost held the funeral for radio. Radio needs to be a more personable media. Radio needs to discover new artists and provide airplay. Radio really needs for all of those incompetent fools who are elected into political office to burn alive inside of their suit coats and needs to get new music played before anyone else by any means necessary. For those who don't think payola does not exist here is a question to ponder: how the hell does Nickelback find themselves receiving airplay on every station on the AM or FM dial? irst person who says it's because they are popular shall be struck by lightning causing them uncontrollable urination.

A lot of good posts. There is good music out there, but nobody is looking. It appears that most of the PD's and station GM's are either squares or too old to remember when new music, regardless of genres, was cool to listen to. Take rock music for example. There is a ton of songs and artists who are not getting airplay. Anyone ever heard of The Sword, Eagles of Death Metal, Halestorm, Lacuna Coil, 12 Stones, Skindred, Jesse James Dupree's Dixie Inc., Jet Black Stare, Hurt? Don't feel bad, neither have the PD's Music Directors or station GM's across the country. In the meantime we are stuck with the obligatory rotation of Black Sabbath, AC/DC (their new CD is good), Metallica (everything after And Justice for All should go into a bonfire), and the obligatory dose of Creed, Nickelback and maybe a song by Hinder not having to do with Lips of an Angel.

On the other hand, a lot of this background music for the slaughterhouse might be more corporate driven and the GM's and PD's are powerless. This is a business that wants to make money and the only way to make money is to get their attention. They are not getting their attention so it is time to change the current formula. The best way to change things would be to go back to what kept radio from David Sarnoff killing it and burying it next to Edwin Armstrong (I hope Sarnoff is burning in hell over that one). Radio needs to be the pioneering force in unveiling new music. Radio needs personalities that have just as much of a passion for the music as they do a passion for getting themselves over by cracking low-brow jokes and giggling like a bunch of teenagers when looking at a woman's naked breasts. Radio needs new voices on stations and needs new faces to associate with specific genres of music. This can work if given a chance.

I guess I must've spoke too soon, now that WAMO is going to become a religious outlet :'(

Yes that's pretty sad. WAMO was a constant in an ever changing world. I just wish I would have started listening to them earlier, I had no idea these would be their final days.

The sale of WAMO has taken everyone by surprise. Interesting speculation on which, if any, station will flip to cover the loss. And it certainly is a loss to the community culturally.

In the B-94/Star 100 war, B is supposed to be positioned as a pop-CHR, Star is a Hot AC. There will naturally be some crossover in those two formats. You would think the CBS braintrust would see the strategic benefit of more seperation for those 2. They're apparently using one of them as a blocker. Whether it's Star as a blocker for Q or B as a blocker for Kiss is subject to debate. At any rate, they're not maximizing the full potential of both stations as they're currently positioined.

Neither one is a blocker. B is targeted 18-34. Star is targeted 35-44.

Fee- I hear you. And agree with your points.

But I have to put my two cents in.

I don't care what the circumstances or situation is, it is never- REPEAT NEVER- a bad thing to have a heavy rotation of AC/DC.

;)
