Way back in WMAQ's country days in the 70s, Charlie Warner would always defend the purists who would complain about the station playing Bobby Vinton (or Olivia Newton-John, or Neil Diamond, or even the Bee Gees) by saying that they played "the music people who like country music like." B96's primary audience groups are young Latino males, teenage girls and women in their 20s that don't particularly care for what 'TMX plays. Therefore, it's B96's job to play what those groups want to hear.
And ever since B96 went churban in the late 80s, they've always added the pop and rock songs that their audience base liked, even in the days when they were using the "Chicago's Dance Beat" and similar slogans. There's always been room for U2, Alanis, Sinead O'Connor, Bette Midler, Cher, Shania and now Green Day, if their audience likes it. That hasn't changed a bit.
