^How many major markets have successful Soft ACs (besides markets in Florida)?

WLTW FM in New York City ranked in the top 3 stations for a very long time.
WYXB FM in Indianapolis, IN consistently ranked in the top 2 with the new PPM format.
KSFI FM in Salt Lake City
WSHH FM Pittsburgh
KOST FM in Los Angeles, top 3 or 4

Those are some of the soft ACs I know that usually perform consistently well.

WLTW and KOST aren't that soft anymore. And WLIT in Chicago plays "What I Like About You." Hardly any of the old school soft ACs are as soft as they used to be.

That's correct. Soft AC has had different meaning that it was even 2 or 3 decades ago and with each decade, the format in itself will continually evolve and change regardless of what the term "soft" means. In 1990, soft AC would have been the Carpenters, Neil Diamond, Bread, America, and Carly Simon. Now, Soft AC would be Journey, Boyz 2 Men, Melissa Ethridge, and REO Speedwagon. What would Soft AC in the year 2030 be like? Would it contain more hip hop like The Black Eyed Peas or will it have Justin Bieber?

None of those are "soft AC." Mainstream AC, yes. AC stations are dropping the 70s left and right lately- look at two of the most successful in the country, B-101 Philadelphia and Lite 106.7 NYC, both have dropped that decade - 94.9 was last AC like 6 or so years ago, when it was still acceptable/viable to play a decent amount of 70s music on AC.

B-98.5 isn't that far from mainstream AC. They've just evolved to keep up with the changes in the format. Some are slower to evolve, some are faster.

???

They all play Katy Perry and GaGa - none of them seem very "Soft" to me

^ If that station wasn't backed by a university (in addition to advertising), they likely wouldn't stand a chance. They run religious programming, as well.
