b1079 now mix 1079

I don't think oldies is coming back.
Why not? Out of 40 or so stations (including all the rimshots) I would think oldies would be an improvement on at least one of them. 107.1 maybe? WGRR's still around and they're 50,000 watts.

Oldies could come back, sure. There's nothing wrong with it. But I doubt it would come back. I would put it on one of the smooth jazz simulcasts.

MIX is a work in progress so I can't judge my frustration in repeats quite yet. :D

ODB definitely wasn't oldies anymore, they were Classic Hits.  They played the Rascals, but they also played Queen, John Mellencamp, Steve Miller, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jay Ferguson and Annie Lennox.  That ain't oldies..  Their brand of Classic Hits is doing great across the country now ON GOOD SIGNALS, and with pretty saleable demos, especially in PPM markets (and Columbus will be PPM before you know it).  That's what 99.7 or 93.3 should be looking at.  In fact, for 93.3 it would be a logical evolution.  Might just require a little tweaking of the Brew to avoid too much overlap.

And speaking of music overlap, this is another example of how CC/Columbus seems irrationally concerned about that, to the point that Columbus has been missing out on formats that do well elsewhere.  ODB and SNY will have far more overlap than an edgier 93.3 and NCI ever would.  Only CC/Columbus seems so over-fixated on keeping stations miles apart (even if that tendency isn't quite as extreme as in the past).

Classic Hits is right. Not oldies. 933 should go Classic Hits actually, considering Sunny has AC locked down. 997 should go CHR against WNCI. Or Urban against POWER 1075.

MIX 1079 -- will it gain back those old listeners? Do you think it will be programmed the same/better?

Unfortunately, ODB won't make it as a Hot AC no matter how it's programmed, because that's one of the formats that is particularly dependent on a GOOD SIGNAL.

Another example of where what would be a promising event in another market is actually a downer because Columbus' rinky-dink-signal syndrome will doom it.  And the fact that they're calling it "Mix 107.9" makes me less-than-optimistic that they're planning on doing some maneuvering to a new signal that might be improved enough to at least give it a fighting chance.

But I do admire Saga for acting quickly and rather intelligently, unlike the company that inherited some practically-run-themselves cash cows (a talker, a country and a CHR), but is inept in handling of its other properties (especially with regard to format selection) except around Christmas.  And this is coming from someone who is going to miss ODB's Classic Hits (but never expected it to last...SIGNAL, SIGNAL, SIGNAL).

I'm going to have to agree on the signal note. But we may just see Mix reappear on a better signal down the road. 1079 is one of those freq's that need to go Rhythmic AC and call it a day and NOT focus on big money-making formats.

No, most of them won't be able to pick up ODB's signal dependably.

I am impressed with Saga..ifthey get permission to move 104.3 into columbus like planned this would make a good format for 104.3 with its proposed Grove City stick.

they could move the smooth jazz to 107.9 with 103.5 as a simlucast.

Plus we all know 102.5 is to make a move in, saga could swhoop it up...

Signal will be an issue. It sounds good thus far. I mean Rome er uh Mix aasn't built in a day, but this Mix has a good foundation. That's for sure. Oh, and is one of those top two songs "I'm Yours?"

I predicted one for once! ;D

Well, you're gonna have some oldies listeners pissed but I bet they stay @ 1079 :) I would think the jocks would move over to 1079 even though there's a signal loss. At least they have a job. And that is a good question... how did 1079 react so fast? I bet they were recommended to flip. Someone was tipped off.

But... I'm willing to bet it's not going to be as well programmed as MIX. I'm listening online now.

And who gets oldies? 103.1? 103.9? 102.5?

Don't forget about WNKO moving from Newark to New Albany. Their new signal on the WCVO tower will be better over most of the metro area than what WODB had. I'll put my money on them taking it over.

Now, the question is who from Mix 97.1 will be heard on 107.9...

It would be a shocker if Mark Dantzer isn't part of the Mix.

Weekender David Greer also used to work for Sunny.

Which leaves us wondering how the rest of the staff will fare:

Charlie Wasson

Kate Burdett

Sue Leighton

Buzz Fitzgerald

Andrew Wright

Amy Dunn

If somebody wants to nab oldies/classic hits, they better jump. Here's the projected coverage map for the New Albany site and WNKO's proposed construction permit.

Congrats to Saga for pulling this off so quickly.

I wouldn't be too surprised to see NABCO pick up the Oldies Format for WTDA.

Wonder what they're going to use as a permanent website address? Mix1079.com is taken and mix1079.net redirects to mix1079.com. Maybe .org or .fm?

I don't blame them for switching. They had nothing to lose, but this is why this will never get the ratings of mix971. HotAC is a format that doesn't have a cult following. It's a format that you hear in banks and other businesses. Those businesses aren't going to change over to 107.9 because they won't be able to pick it up. I think the wisest decision for a station like 107.9 would be to program to a younger audience. Pick up the active rock, Mainstream Urban, or younger Top 40. Ratings might peek at first but in the end their ratings won't do much of anything with this new format. It's a shame because it seems, in my opinion, to be better than 97.1 was.

Well they're already using "themix1079.com" My guess is that if they can pick up some cool call letters that they might infuse those into the mix, pun intended.

Edit to add: I think WIXM is available. Does anyone know how to find out for sure?

You can do searches directly via the FCC website here.

WIXM is available as of this writing.

WCMX is taken by an AM religious station in Massachusetts (Hope 1000), but if Saga could gain permission to use WCMX-FM, that would be a great fit. At the same time, with the call letters being something that you can bury in a late-in-the-hour stopset, they don't particularly have a need to change the calls from WODB.

That sounds about right. Most of these 5000 will be repeated ;)

Never heard of Audisc, either.

Audisk was a 1990's era, DOS based radio automation system. It was OK at the time and was used, for awhile anyway, by WCOL-AM. Today's automation systems far outshine anything an Audisk could do. Usually, Saga uses Scott Studios equipment in a lot of their stations. I would assume they'd use something like that today.
