B92 flips the switch to 92.5 THE BOX "IS HIP HOP"

Here's the low down... On Friday Apex will flip the switch on CHR/Pop B92.5 in favor of Urban 92.5 THE BOX. A promo video is out on popular social sites giving Charleston's hip-hop fans heads up. The video even takes a stab at Citadel's Terry Base PD of competing Z93 JAMZ. The new station will feature the syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show (I posted an earlier post of Rickey Smiley landing in charleson last week) and Charlamagne Tha God at nights along with DJ D-Nyce. Michael Tee current PD of STAR 99.7 will be running things at the new 92.5 THE BOX.

Iceman im not sure as of now. Wonder if Apex will stunt or just flip into the new format. Hmmm, maybe 9:25am on Friday???

Wow....Charleston will certainly have the Urban market cornered. Greenville only has one station geared towards the Urban audience that gets huge shares and always sits on top - I've always wished someone else here would go Urban of some sort just for competition's sake.

What would have me worried are the misspellings on the youtube posting.

The video wasn't made nor uploaded by Apex Broadcasting, however some staff know its out there. It was a leak done by some well known dj's in Charleston, but I too noticed the spelling was off. This station has been in the works for a while considering I got word of Rickey Smiley's show coming to Charleston prior to the format flip being leaked.

That one station, 107.3 JAMZ is geared to the Urban AC audience in the Upstate. The Urban Comntemporary format is no where to be found in the Upstate. Cox does have HOT 98.1 as 107.3 JAMZ' sister station, but its very Rhythmic. Between both station there are lots of Hip-Hop songs that Greenville/Spartanburg/Anderson misses out on.

Why? Our market is getting to be such a bad one. B92 had a 3.8 rating, higher than 95SX. They were a good station, probably better than 95SX with their boring morning show and flipping around formats throughout the day.

Now, we're stuck with yet another urban station. That's five of them (92.5, 93.3, 107.3, 99.7, and 106.3 (gospel)). They just did this to get their show on in the market.

92.5 will have a better signal than Z93, so that might be an edge for them. 92.5 is one of the best FM signals in the area, available with a better signal in Georgetown, Andrews, St. George and Walterboro. That might help them in the ratings, as Z93 is shortchanged with E93 in Savannah and 93.5 in Columbia.

98.1 is not an Urban station, IMO. I don't think it attracts much of an urban audience. Lady GaGa, Ke$ha, etc....that's rhythmic top 40, almost the same as WFBC except they don't play the few "rock" tracks..

There is room for an Urban Contemporary in Greenville/Spartanburg, and I think Clear Channel or Entercom should jump on the chance.

No way HOT 98.1 is Urban. Thats why I said the Upstate misses out on Hip-Hop songs that no station up there will touch.

Apex vs Citadel
I'll make this short, but remember at the end of the day its about the ol' mighty dollar. Apex's STAR 99.7 Urban AC is currently the #1 station in Charleston ranking 10.8. Apex wants to keep them at #1, but Citadel's Urban Contemporary Z93 JAMZ is always within the top 2 currenty sitting at #2 with 9.7. Its safe to say STAR 99.7 has over taken Citadel's Urban AC MAGIC 107.3 currently at 5.8. The Top 40/Pop ratings battle between B92 and 95SX are always ranking between 3.0-4.0, but neither station cracked the top 5. Here where the flip comes into play. Apex is going to claim that #1 spot with STAR 99.7, so the new 92.5 THE BOX will keep Z93 JAMZ down some maybe to #3 or #4 if they are wise. This will now give Apex the ability to sell STAR/THE BOX as a combo deal. Smart move, but hopefully this can explain the flip.

The new 92.5 is far superior musically, lineup, originality, etc. I mean who outside radio has ever heard of any of jocks Z got? I've heard of Fat Man Scoop, Rickey Smiley, D-Nyce, Charlamagne, Knowledge, etc, Citadel can't compete with that, one reason why they broke! :D :D They will easily top Z93. When Star 99.7 first entered the market, they were #1 the first book. The reality is Terry Base sucks. That's why when ABC and Citadel merged, and had to sell off stations, it was Magic. The only reason Z has lasted this long is there was no competition. But Michael Tee has proven he can easily take Terry, and that's what's about to happen. It should be a cakewalk for Apex.

The market is being over-urbanized again. 99.7 doesn't need a "flanker" to do what they do. So instead of having the #1 urban AND #1 CHR, let's settle for #1 urban, and hope we can also be #2 urban?

Stupid.

G

PS: As an aside, I do believe the "Box" name is a Radio One product (KBXX, Houston, TX). Enjoy the lawsuits, Apex!

Maybe B92 isn't billing well enough for what Apex expected? Perhaps B's 18-34 demo numbers aren't up to parr? As far as the BOX branding, Apex should be fine. The Box is the name of Radio One's 97.9 in Houston. The Box was also the name of a music television channel in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Can anybody record the flip and post it?

I sure hope Sean Mack know what he's doing music wise because he's staying on board as MD. Local artist have always complained about Z93's MD Yonni The Rudeboy not giving local music a chance. This is going to be an interesting war.

Big Buc, I'll try to record it for ya. You can catch it online http://www.streamaudio.com/player/player.aspx?optin=no&station=WIHB_FM

I don't know Sean Mack, was he the MD for B92 or something? I never listened to B before, so I can't really judge his abilities. I don't know. Apex doesn't really give locals a chance either though. Maybe I should send my aircheck in.......
