Barbecue at Pratt's house?

Hey just an idea. If I throw a free barbecue at my house for everybody on this board plus your families, would you come? And would you use your real names? I would enjoy meeting all of you, even my detractors. In fact, I would appreciate the opportunity to turn you into friends. And yes, for some insane reason, I trust you in my home!! Seriously, no pressure at all, just fun. Give me your thoughts. I know an awesome caterer who does steak, jumbo shrimp, chicken, burgers, dogs and even fish. Cold drinks, video games, bouncers, face painting, a magician and a 3-story water slide for the kids. Cold adult beverages for you, and a chance for all of you to meet each other! (My only request is that you have to be yourself, no fake names or agendas.) All in? If so, start by identifying yourself at this time so we know you will really accept my invite. My family would love to have you!

I would love to attend. I would look at it as a networking gathering. You can never have too many allies in this business!

I think it's a fantastic idea, and I would love to attend such an event. Sounds like it would be great fun and great conversation, if we all arrive as ourselves.

Nice to see you've finally joined, Andrew. :)

Hey, I'm not part of the professional radio scene but I'd love to meet people in the biz.

One question though Dave.....why would you need 'bouncers'? <oh.....wait.....silly me!> ;D

John Hamlett

I would come, but I will still be Dj KDM.

Either that, or
KDM7000, DjKDM7000, KDM7000 fgv MUSIC, KDM7000 future soundz, Kwabena Deejay KDM as on Facebook, ...etc.

The only thing I will not be is Dj Shymann!!! Dj Shymann died. ;D

I would love to attend as well. I'm also not a part of the business as well, although I did intern for Toby Amies at KRQ back in the 90's and I tinkered with an internet dance station through live365.com for nearly 2 years.

I'm sure that a lot of people would love to stop by your house for a bite, but I'm equally sure that there are people on this board who work for certain companies who frown on participation on this board.

And by "frown on participation" I mean "will fire them for doing so."

I'd love to meet you Dave, and I'd love to see your house, but I can't risk it.

Encouraging so far, but some of you still need to give real first and last names. That's the deal.
Whoops -- my bad! Read the copy, Andrew!

Full name: Andrew Greenstein. Overnight/weekend anchor on KFYI; occasional morning drive anchor on KOY.

Ford, are you serious? Is the company you work for that insecure? Sounds to me like they are lucky to have you and should trust your good judgment. You wouldn't be doing anything wrong, and they don't own you. They just employ you. In fact, invite them to come with you! Everybody would be welcome. Think about it. You are a big part of this board, and without you and some of the others it wouldn't be the same. But if not, no worries. And either way, I look forward to meeting you too. If you see me around town, please say hello.

I will be moving to Phoenix shortly and would be honored to attend with my best friend on the planet to meet you, Dave. I've heard you a lot and have followed your career as well. Coming in from California and was in Phoenix last week with an incredible look and tour of your great city in the Valley of the Sun with Radio Bubbleheads VP / KOOL Listener Lauren. I can't wait to meet you and the R-I posters. Great idea and thanks for offering. I'd gladly kick in a few bucks or supplies. This could become "The Mother of All Barbecues!"

PS - Your many fans miss you.

Regards,

Joe Benson (oaktree)

Dave, I hate to break this to you, but not everyone is in the rather unique financial situation you are.

Some of us are in the unenviable position of having to keep our jobs. I can't flip off my employer and fall back on my investments to keep me solvent until the next thing comes along. The company I work for may not be that insecure, but I am. Unlike you, I am at the mercy of my current employer. I don't like it, but I don't have a giant reserve of cash I can depend upon to tide me over until I find another gig.

Lacking the ability to walk away, I am not just employed, but owned.

If you can tell me how to get to the level you're at with zero money in the bank, I'm all ears.

I understand Ford, and my apologies if I seemed insensitive. I just hate the thought of any radio employer controlling your personal life out of fear. Not a great working atmosphere. Is that what our industry has come to? In that type of controlling environment, it is no wonder that our industry is becoming stale. If others feel the same, then maybe my idea of a social and private get together will not be workable. For the record, even years before I was financially secure, I never let employers push me around. Mutual respect was always earned, expected and demanded. You mentioned that I am in a unique situation because I can fall back on investments. Well, those investments were earned through years of hard work, but mostly because I dared to be different and not follow the norm. You asked me how you can get to that level. A start would be to stand up for yourself. Work hard and be dedicated to your employer. Respect your employer, but never forget that you are a person before an employee. All my best.

Hey Hizzoner!

You know I'll be there. What can I bring?

By the way, Dave, since everyone on the board has the ability to exchange private messages, might I suggest that the eternally anonymous communicate to our gracious host, hop on the guest list, and promise to reveal themselves to all who attend. Anybody have a better idea? Oh, and in the spirit of the radio business that we love/hate, no sharp objects, please. :D

Best to all,

"Big Shoe" Stu Evans - damn, I'm sorry - my REAL name is "Large Loafer" Stuart Evans. I swore I'd never reveal that. I promised "Jimmy Sharpe" I would keep his secret as well.

First off, is this all for real??? If so, I'm in!!! And yes this is my real name, always has been, always will be. Just don't expect an offer on the house!!!

Is this like the Old Ewing barbecue on Dallas? People getting into fist fights and thrown into the swimming pool? Could be quite an entertaining afternoon. Post photos.

Dave - how about a compromise? Instead of requiring attendees to publicly post their real names on this website why not have everyone attend with name badges and no visible link to their R-I persona (unless they so desired). They could share their nickname with others verbally but no requirement to do so.

-OR-

You could keep the time and location of the BBQ secret and that way the mean old station management couldn't find it. Of course neither could anyone else. ;D Save you a bundle in food and drink expense! Especially if Akbar and the Nurse attend.

What a nice offer, Dave! A lot of us would probably be most comfortable not having to reveal who we are on the actual board, itself, though. The anonomity is what lets us be honest and open here. I personally don't trust my employer not to retaliate against me if I post something negative about them, should they know who I am. Sadly, that's pretty common.
