Barbecue at Pratt's house?

Newark is beautiful this time of year. Are the rest of you jealous? I have a one day turn-around on a red-eye. Who can blame me?

As for the barbecue, no it is not an April Fool's thing, and yes I am serious. However, here is the deal. ALL IN! Everybody must agree to not only use their real names on this board, but also at the barbecue and forever and ever thereafter Amen. That's right. No more fake names, EVER. This is my way of proving there is nothing to be afraid of among peers and proving that people are much less confrontational in person.

Look, we all have something in common which is the love for radio. Using our real names would make our Phoenix board unique and the most credible of any board in the nation. If you use your real name on this board, simply respect your employer and respect others opinions. In an open and honest exchange of ideas and thoughts, any quality employer would not object. The only reason employers reject this board is due to random, unsubstantiated hearsay and people hiding behind bushes sniping at each other. If this was an open and honest forum then it would be of true value to employers and employees alike. So in an effort to place the Phoenix board above the rest, my offer is sincere.

Now, if my offer is not accepted and some of you would still like to meet me, that is a compliment. I have always given my time to those already in the business and those starting out. All you have to do is drop me an email and invite me to coffee or ask me to call you. I always enjoy meeting crusty old veterans or even beginners, and surprisingly, I tend to learn an equal amount from both. When we stop learning from our peers and close our minds is when we should all hang up our headphones.

Anybody want a postcard from Newark?

Sure! You still in that apartment complex where we both lived in the early 80s when you were doing overnights at KUPD and I was on nights at KZZP? :)

I'd never pass up the opportunity for some time with Dave (what's it been...10 years since the last interview, Dave?) and if Big Shoe Stu and Joe Benson (Dave, put together a group of investors and buy a Phoenix station while the stick values are nice and low and then put yourself, Stu and Joe on it) are coming too...well, that's a bonus.

Having never posted under anything other than my own name going all the way back to the Tanim board and rec.radio.broadcasting, it's not asking anything of me.

Ford and others who feel you need to stay anonymous to keep your jobs, I understand your situation. I've had several employers to consider the last 15 years of posting (Channel 3, Sunny 97, Eagle 96.9, KTAR, AZ-TV and ABC15).

What worked for me has been to not comment on my own station (unless that was part of my job, as it was at AZ-TV) other than to answer questions about my own performance or defend a co-worker unfairly under attack; not to comment on a direct competitor unless it was to say something positive about an individual (and looking back on it, Channel 3 probably would have preferred I didn't publicly say how good Lew Ruggiero was) and to not take a public position contrary to that of the people signing my paycheck (Ron Bergamo graciously and/or grudgingly looked the other way when I openly supported outlawing non-compete clauses...he was one of those who testified before the legislature to keep them).

Yeah, it limits me. But the stuff I can't talk about under that code is stuff that I wouldn't believe as a reader if I saw it posted under a fake name. So it's a wash. And I still get to talk about a business I love, people I respect and admire
and occasionally contribute some history and perspective (as the new kid suddenly finds himself 54 and in town for 24
years).

You have to make your own call, but know this: If they ever want to find out who's behind a post they don't like...and you work for them...they will.

And finally, if the only poster I sway is Dr. Akbar...then it's all been worthwhile.

Didn't we try this a year ago at Ted's Hot Dogs in Mesa? :D

Of course, nobody was treating, and there was no swimming pool...and Akbar and the Nurse never showed. But the hot dogs were good, and so was the company, such as it was...

No "real name" issues for me, either...but then the closest I've gotten to Phoenix radio is taking pictures of all the towers and a few of the studios, so what do I know?

Give credit where credit is due.....Ted's Hot Dogs is in Tempe (McClintock & Southern if memory serves).

And Tempe is home to Arizona State University and the Gateway to Maricopa! (local joke)

Can we get Wizard Lew Rogers out of retirement?

How about "geezers"? ;D The Old Gringo is invited, isn't he?

Save you a bundle in food and drink expense! Especially if Akbar and the Nurse attend.

I think a lot of us, whether posting by "handle" or name, really want to know
who Akbar is. ;) Wonder if he (they?) will bite on Dave's invite?

If Doc and the Nurse do, I guess I'm ready to pull the trigger too. The BBQ
sounds like a great idea. Two local regular posters, one occasional local and
one out of market (hold the Mayo!) (Kodak) poster know of my double identity;
there could be others.

My "dilemma" is that PD Kris, the Gumpduskers, the KayFuNNsters, and others
(Mr. Kim Komando? Nah, he has a thick skin...and lame SFX!) may not be too
fond of some of my posts.

I thought everybody knew who Akbar was! The name sounded real enough to me, especially after seeing it as much as I have.

Well.... I have no problem revealing my real name because I'm going to be leaving the country anyway, have many interests other than radio and broadcasting, and even if I didn't use my real name I'd still be found under KDM or DJ KDM...etc. So, it's not like I can hide really.

Nothing to hide! I can say pretty much whatever I want, talk about dance music without being beheaded, ..etc. Then if I mess up and for some reason I should wanna get away, no Southwest. It will be British Airways! ;D

I'm bettin' the Dr. and Nurse will stay incognito. I know I will-it's got nothing to do with fear, I love my alter ego and don't want to give her up! Have fun everybody! :)

Should we get the Knuckles Brothers (Vinny & Bruno) to provide.....er....."security"?

Aw....c'mon! There will be only two females there. We already know KLL so the other one must be.....Ms. Patricia Whackadoo?

Ummmmm, I work at two strip clubs, so I can provide more females...y'all don't care that they don't post on here, do you? And per some of your references to "Gumpdusker's", I guess I'm one of them. Yup, I work for Sandusky, proud of it, AND in fact on the air RIGHT NOW!!!! AND TOMORROW...AND MONDAY...AND...you get the pic!

I can also double as a bouncer, 6'1 270#...BIG AND BEEFY!!!

lt, you know Liz B will be there and I'm thinking there are a couple more but can't think of their usernames.

I've only posted a handful of times, but I come here quite often to read about the business I love (although I'm not in it at the moment) in the city I love. If I can drag my wife away from her studies for an evening, I'd love to attend.
... and my name is Ron Simpson, although when I was on air I went by Ron Reigns.

I don't post often enough to feel like a contributor to the board. Usually I just read and have a good laugh at the way some posters take themselves way too seriously, and others who can't read the tongue-in-cheek facetiousnous and/or sarcasm of some posters. But I'd be happy to attend a party at Dave's house (heard you have quite the spread, Dave) as long as my wife and kids could come too. Be nice to see Michael Hagerty too as I used to enjoy running the boards for him and Jay Lawrence at KTAR.

I'm not in radio, most people here know my real name.

Its CastlesandCoasters... :D

When I asked my wife if she would be interested in going to a bbq at Dave Pratt's house, she said, "No." ;D

Obviously, my wife is not a big radio person. Me, I love radio and miss broadcasting. Count me in!!! I just hope it doesn't happen on a school night (I'm working on a masters degree--not in journalism, btw). ;)

Looking forward to meeting everyone soon!!

Even though the consensus is that Akbar won't reveal himself
or show up--with or without Jeff--I can't pass up this black tie
gathering (or is it no jacket required?) and the chance to hang
out with KLL, Liz, the Old Gringo, the Professor and Mary Anne,
and the rest (sorry, I mixed season one in with seasons two
and three :D). My real identity might be one of the following:

Barbara Billingsley
Huge Beaumont
(cough) John Adkins (cough)
Tony Dow
or Jerry Mathers as the Beaver

Although wouldn't it be an absolute riot if two guys in fezzes
actually do show up at Pratt's front door? ;D
