Bauerle's Mood Swings

Is it just me or is Tommy B. really cranky lately?

He has made references in the past on the air and on Facebook and Twitter about 2011 "being a bad year" and he's hinted about issues in his personal life, but it seems like some days he's really moody and downright cranky.

Act or not, Tommy can be touchy lately. As I've said in the best, sometimes it is entertaining, but sometimes the personal beefs with in-studio equipment or the fact that his chair squeaks when he sits on it are tough to listen to.

Tom is a solid broadcaster, but his act may start to wear thin on some if he can't iron out these off-air problems he keeps vaguely referring to in a way that makes it seem as though he wants SOMEONE to ask him about them.

Tom is a difficult guy. Lately, he's been REALLY hard to figure out.

I never really understood the Bauerle thing. I don't find him to be very relatable, up to and including his very unnatural way of speaking on the air. Who talks like that? It's awkward and forced.

This isn't even taking into consideration the amount of irresponsible things I've heard him say in recent years.

I guess he has good numbers, but I do wonder how much of that is by default, because there really isn't much else on. I think there is an illusion of leverage over WBEN by him, based on things he's said. In reality, he needs them more than they need him. I cannot imagine anything they'd replace him with being LESS attractive to listen to.

On his Facebook page, Brad Riter writes that he'll fill in for Bauerle on WBEN this Thursday and Friday; Brad says he'll also talk hoops with UB Bulls Coach Reggie Witherspoon Monday nights at 6:30. I'm happy for the guy.

Even after the "Manifesto", they're letting him back in the building? LOL.

Riter will reach more ears in two days on WBEN than a month on WECK. Apparently the suits at Corporate Parkway know that Riter was just stirring the pot when he issued the Manifesto. To the WBEN suits, that's the sign of a good talk show host. Now all Riter has to do is follow through with the WBEN mantra: Obama socialist. Gingrich good. Bachman patriot. Fox news truth. Main stream medium liberal bias. Job killing taxes. Appeasement. Class warfare. If Riter can get those talking points down, those 65+ listeners in Amherst will love him. Love him!

So wait a minute... what happened to Ron Dobson filling in?

And if Ron isn't available, what about Larry Hunter?

Or Kathy Weppner?

Riter on WBEN... and on WECK the same week?

I'm confused. Very confused.

Is it safe to say that Chris Parker called in a favor for his good friend Brad and that allowed Mr. Riter to get some type of personal meeting with Reid or Wenger or Roth and asked for a "tryout" of sorts to be the new Ron Dobson fill-in type for 930 AM or maybe to pitch a new show weekday evenings?

Wenger's wife is Susan Rose, the very on-air talent who Riter blasted in the WECK on-air promos for being part of the "boring and bland" WBEN morning show. I know this is a strange business, but that was VERY personal. Same with the on-air promos in which Bill O'Loughlin tore into Bauerle for doing the same-old, same-old local talk when the two of them were going head-to-head.

On a related note, I'm listening to Bauerle today and he just said "I'm not going to be working Thursday or Friday.... and uh.... yeah."

That's the second or third off-handed cheap shot he's taken at Brad today. I also heard him say something about "working in corporate radio, unlike some people" earlier today and my wife said yesterday he talked about "sleeping in very, very, very late Thursday and Friday so I won't be listening to this station and don't care what happens while I'm gone."

He clearly is NOT happy that Brad will be sitting in his seat and occupying his time slot. Anyone have any other thoughts on this very strange arrangement?

Is Dobson not filling in at WBEN anymore? I'd hate to think that's the case, as he's one of the very few local personalities that I find to be entertaining. Riter is okay, but that nasalness of his drives me crazy.

Rox may be onto something. If Bauerle's contract is up soon and there's issues with him agreeing to a new deal, the little nit-picky things like the equipment and then having someone he's not a fan of filling in for HIM during HIS timeslot may cause Bauerle to snap.

And let's not kid ourselves: unless Tom has some type of major medical procedure scheduled, he WILL be listening to Brad.

And yes, where does Dobson play into all of this? What does Ron think about Brad getting six hours of prime time airtime over him?

Good luck to Brad.

This could blow up in Tim Wenger's face. Or it could prove to be a great programming decision of Riter shows he has what it takes to do general talk.

I still think moving Mike Schopp over from WGR to WBEN is the right way to go if Tom Bauerle were to ever leave and let Riter work with his friend Chris Parker on weekday afternoons on WGR.

While I like Schopp, I think he'd make the mistake on WBEN of trying to be too reasonable, maybe even suggesting that Obama's not such a bad guy. Imagine that? The core audience will not tolerate that. Also, Schopp is way too laid back to go solo on WBEN. Seems to work ok paired on WGR, but I just don't see it outside of that realm. The better hosts are more animated than subtle. Schopp is very subtle and abstract and he doesn't come through the radio at you. While that may sound charming, it's a liability in the format.

Just heard Sandy Beach say at the end of his show that Ron Dobson is filling in for him while he's on vacation, starting tomorrow.

Mystery solved.

I'd like to hear Schopp do straight talk on WBEN. If he becomes exasperated by the sports nuts who call WGR, just imagine how he'd cope with the wingnuts who bristle at factual reality. Mensa Man surely doesn't believe that Earth is but seven thousand years old. Dobson and Riter filling in for Beach and Bauerle on WGOP? Whoa! Must be the Fall book is over.

LOL.

It does seem that if you are the least bit reasonable, you'd have to do a very strategic dance, treading delicately on WBEN's core. Not for the faint of heart. And it sounds like you want to hear Schopp try it for all the wrong reasons. Almost like feeding one to the lions.

I don't listen to Bauerle, can't take the voice that sounds computer generated. Riter sitting in for him is very strange especially after he waged war against WBEN when he was on WECK. Is BEN that hard up or did someone do him a favor? Riter doesn't do anything for me either, sorry still won't listen!
