Best Country radio stations...

In Dothan, Alabama we had until the other day a classic country 105.3 the legends until the station owners decided to change it to news talk . I had to find another channel to listen to but I won't find another classic country again around here .

101.9 The Twister (KTST/Oklahoma City) is one of my favorites.

Great name, great logo and kick ass imaging...

I will agree fully - any country that plays rock and pop style imagers is ok in my book.. reminds me of "the kat" but only country.

Here are my favorites:
1: 94.1 KMPS: Great playlist. I also like Flo's traffic reports.
2: 100.7 The Wolf KKWF: Awesome station! Love Fitz in The Moring and General Gridlock doing the traffic every morning.
3: KAPS 660 AM Mount Vernon, WA: Satellite-fed but a good station. I like Darcy's late afternoon program.

Best Country radio stations

103.7 WSOC-FM in Charlotte, NC
99.5 The Wolf KPLX in Dallas/Fort Worth

WAKG 103.3 in Danville, Virginia. Live and local, great mix of currents and classics, good sweepers/commercial production. Very responsive to their listeners as well and involved in the community. Their Saturday Night Cool Classics program is really a treat.

Can't go wrong with the great 650 WSM. I listen to it at night sometimes...love it!

92.5 WESC in Greenville, SC is a great heritage station. It's been reduced over the years, but still it isn't the average "cookie cutter" CC Country station. They have a unique mix of mostly late 80s/90s music (sometimes even 70s) with currents/2000s of course. Huge signal. Used to be simulcast with WESC-AM 660, a 50kW daytime only station, now religious. Probably one of the best. http://www.wescfm.com

Here are some of mine

WSM 650 The Legend,, Listen every night after 6 when it booms in

WAMZ 97.5 Louisville KY

92.9 The Bear Lexington KY,, but they were better when they were K-93

101.1 in Hazard KY.. Monster Huge signal

99.9 WKSF Kiss Country Asheville NC... Huge Powerful Flame Thrower Signal,, and very good to be a CC station

97.9 WCOS Columbia SC

107.7 in Knoxville TN... Heritage Country station

and from the past AM 610 AKA 61 Country in Kansas City R.I.P....

98.5 KYGO Denver CO Another flamethrower signal...

I'm not really into country music, but I'll chime in:

K102 Mpls.

101.9 The Twister OKC - gotta agree with ya, Jeff

WSM 650 Nashville - I can get it at night

Froggy 99.9 & Bob 95 battle in Fargo, ND

600 KSJB Jamestown, ND - full service classic country station...figure 8 signal pattern!  (look up the map on radio-locator.com)

My fiancee wore a "Turn Your Knob to Bob" t-shirt to We-Fest. I'm surprised she didn't get whipped! ;D

or thrown out.

When CC was in Fargo (now Radio Fargo-Moorhead/Ingstad broadcasting) They brought a format called "The Outlaw"

It vaporized when Ingstad took it over. Too bad it was actually a very good station gaining alot in 18-35 male.

I remember that too... Outlaw 92.7! Ingstad had to divest it (to Northwestern College, which flipped it to Christian) because they owned too many stations (CC was grandfathered).

I also remember 104.7 The Dam, it was a modern rocker, the listeners and staff were loyal to the station (it was a tough sell, especially with an active rocker [Q98] in the market already), though my prediction that Q98 wouldn't flip formats held true.

Michigan's Thumb Area has some very good country stations. WLEW-AM 1340 in Bad Axe is, unusual for a small-town station on a graveyard frequency, 100% live and local, and they play a mix of currents and classics. WMIC-AM 660 in Sandusky has transitioned to mainly news/talk during the day (they have an FM sister that is country 24/7 but uses ABC's Today's Best Country format) but they still play music in some dayparts. WMIC plays new songs months before they hit the Detroit stations and they also have an excellent classic country show in the mornings, hosted by local legend Paul Osentoski (who also hosts a Polka show on Saturdays and Sundays).

In northern Michigan, sister stations WTCM-FM 103.5 in Traverse City (simulcast on WBCM-FM 93.5 Boyne City) and WATZ-FM 99.3 Alpena (simulcast on WRGZ-FM 96.7 Rogers City) both have heritage and playlists that balance gold with currents. TCM has been a country station since the mid-'70s, I think, and they sometimes play classics dating all the way back to the '60s. WATZ-FM actually does a better job of being a full-service news-and-information source than its AM sister which is News/Talk. ATZ does go satellite (U.S. Country from JRN) after 11 pm and is heavy with syndicated programming on weekends but they are live and local when it counts and in fact have more local programming than any other station in the area.

Detroit has two FM country stations, of which 99.5 WYCD is obviously the stronger. Can't say I care much for CBS-owned YCD's small playlist and their slowness to add new music, but they are strong in terms of personality and community involvement and deserve credit for that. Their competitor, Clear Channel's WDTW (106.7 The Fox), is a mess... nuff said. In nearby Ann Arbor, WWWW-FM 102.9 resurrected the calls and "W4" branding (that used to be on what is now WDTW The Fox) eight years ago, and have done very well with it since.

A couple other area stations which deserve a mention if nothing else because of their heritage and continued success... WITL-FM 100.7 Lansing and WKKO-FM 99.9 Toledo.

Musically though, I still say you can't beat Real Country or WSM-AM.

They moved to 97.5 years ago. Too close to WPEG in Charlotte.

I've heard many good things about them. The second-place station in the ratings used to not even be able to see their dust.

There's one station I kind of like... WGRX in Fredericksburg, VA, known as "Thunder 104.5" plays some early classic country along with more recent country (and the station throws in come classic and Southern rock into its big playlist).

Last night I heard WSOC, Charlotte, NC, say that they were playing this song long before most stations.

There's a reason for that.

Banjos ... shows promise. Hard rock 70s style ... not. I mean HARD rock.

Their competitor, Kat Country, played a 70s song last week by The Eagles for no particular reason. It wasn't a gold show or anything. The DJ just said he was playing him some Eagles. I assume there was a DJ in Charlotte and not just a recording, but I'm probably wrong.

But I like the idea. The Eagles are good.

I like "Real Country" even if its satelitte. We lost our affiliate to sports so now i have to listen to cookie cutter country on FM. But at night I still think WSM AM in Nashville is still cool.
With WSM's fall rating the worst I've seen them, I hope like hell that it's not the end for them.
