Big Jay Sorensen on WCBS-FM Radio Greats This Sunjay!!!!

The bottom line is that good or bad as a dj, at this time in history, makes no difference. The main objective for CBS-FM and the other CBS o & o classic hits stations is to get bodies to sit there and work five hour shifts for lower money than djs did in the same markets 30 or 40 years ago considering the value of the dollar. The next step will be total automation for each station with the possible exception of morning drive. It's all about lowering costs. If quality mattered, there would be no five hour shifts and no automation. All you djs that are self promoting on here, it won't make any difference no matter what you do. The unemployed will stay unemployed no matter what your previous track record was. The employed will work long shifts for low money by historical standards until they are also unemployed. This is a shrinking industry with not a pretty future.

30 or 40 years ago? The personalities were paid more and respected more for one reason, they delivered. They were worth every penny.

What current personality on music radio in NYC has the name recognition of a Cousin Brucie, Murray The K, Ron Lunde, Don Imus, Dan Ingram, Howard Stern, George Michael, Chuck Leonard, Gary Stevens, Scott Muni, Bob Lewis, Jim Nettleton, HOA or Harry Harrison? And one rougue overnight guy, Roby Young, who singlehandedly started the "Paul is dead" rumor. These were the voices of Music Radio 30 and 40 years ago.

These guys pulled 25 shares at times. Now, a great rating is a 5. I remember Dan Ingram jokingly announcing his dissapointment in coming in 7th(exact?) in the ratings one year...WABC showed 7th...in Pittsburgh!

In adjusted dollars, shouldn't they have been paid 5 times as much for delivering 5 times the audience size? When they did an appearance, thousands would show up. Today, you get prize pigs. In 40 years, how many will remember the jock lineup on today's WCBS-FM? It's a good station, with good people. But I don't see a "Golden 101.1 Rewound" weekend listened to by hundreds of thousands worldwide. They stand on the shoulders of WMCA, WABC and WNBC. To an extent, WINS and WMGM.

I'm looking forward to webbing in on Jay this weekend.

Radio Truth, this is Mrs. BIG JAY. He wouldn't approve, but he isn't home right now, so here goes. SO he's happy to be on CBS, he's happy to be anywhere right now after the last three years we have lived through. He has faced death 5 times, and there were times he wasn't sure he would live another day to see his family, much less be back doing what is in his blood. He helplessly stood by and watched a dear friend die from the same thing he fought off 5 times.

So, if you think you took the wind out of our sails, you are mistaken. After the hell we have lived through, there is NOTHING anyone can say or do to get to us. We live every day to it's fullest. YOU should try it. Life is precious. You are entitled to your opinion, but as you see, not everyone agrees with you. Life is meant to enjoy! He's on the way back after a very trying time, and I couldn't be more proud!

And bravo to you, Mrs. Big Jay!! (besides, I have a weakness for anyone named Andrea.... ;) ) - UNLIKE Radio Truth (and probably others on this Board, I will be listening to Big Jay BIG time - he deserves the BEST!!

The TRUTHster of Looooove sez:

Does one more or less dj making union scale in New York at CBS-FM really make a difference.

It does.

TO THE LISTENER.

And by that I mean, not to the CEO, the CFO, the investment banker, the trade mags, or the pundits on weenie boards, living in Mom's basement (you know, I'm gonna start a syndicated radio program about radio... and call it "Mom's Basement"! An homage, if you will..! :p)

GET IT, NOW? Of course you don't. We, to whom such laughable naivete still matters, are all Polyannas; we long for a time that's never coming back; and we're all as necessary as buggy whip salesmen.

Okay? Happy now? Now go away.

p.s to Jay: Don't let the bastiges get you down. Truthy's idea of "Radio" is 800 in-a-row with no talk, so you can listen longer at the office to the station everyone can agree on, on a no-repeat workday that picks you up and makes you feel good all day long at the office where everyone can agree upon it and listen longer...

p.p. s. to Big Andrea (as opposed to the Other Andrea; hi there!): You are such a great wife (can you believe this putz got you? ;D)

p.s to R.F. Burns (my... never heard that one before!):

Yes. Currently working, currently on-air in a major market, and currently sitting on my kiester at home, talking to board weenies, while taking advantage of my ultra-generous "time off" benefits.

And even if I didn't happen to be gainfully employed at the moment... how does that affect one's worth as a human being?

Or, one's right to make a knowledgeable comment?

The problem with the internet, as I see it, is that it gave some sort of legitimacy to all you shallow nobodies.

Hey...I'm just pleased to be in the company of those WHO GET IT and VERKLEMPT to be in the company of those who DON'T!! I think there are those on the Board who are missing the ENTIRE thing of what guys like Big Jay and Famous Amos and the guys of that era and even many of today's era is all about, and that is this...

Guys like Big Jay and Amos and the guys at CBS-FM are "real air personalities", not these "800 songs in a row" liner readers or these time-temp (Drake-Chenault for you oldtimers!!) jocks - "real air personalities" who had a GREAT time on the air with the fans, who talked up the music, talked up what was going on, and kept it ALL real...Bravo to Brian Thomas for bringing that spirit back with the RETURN OF WCBS-FM and a double bravo to Mr. Thomas for Big Jay on Sunday!

Ok...just once more...

I was NOT on the radio in the heyday of the great 60's jocks like the ones mentioned above.
And frankly, I've been off the air for a stretch due to corporate mumbo-jumbo which I won't get into here.
Fact is, I only put these items on several boards because (Drake Tympani please) this is how we communicate now.

I was just letting people know what I was invited to do. If some see it as self-serving, so be it. I was encouraged by some folks INSIDE to do just that to get a "buzz" about my appearance. Nothing more, nothing less. Ingram doesn't NEED that. He's INGRAM. Brucie doesn't need it...but I hear promo after promo for him on SIRIUS. The other guys are retired. So it's time for the NEW generation of Good Guys, All-Americans, Boss Jocks to have their time in the sun.

There are MANY great jocks out there who have not been ON CBS-FM's Radio Greats yet. I hope they get their shots soon. Brian is trying (from my perspective) to give the folks who had some time doing pop music shows over the years a crack at some nostalgia. Nothing more. There are no agendas here. I put these posts up here because I feel I'm a member of this community. Excuse me if SOME of you think I am "above" that. No. I'm just a regular guy who has been blessed with a decent career through hard work, being in the right place at the right time, and lady luck...and a bit of self-marketing.

Why I have to explain this, and why friends and family feel compelled to even communicate with some people who are just so empty and sad...even hateful is beyond me. But they do it because they miraculously LIKE me..in some cases LOVE.

So next time I answer a post, it will be for something positive and with meaning to share with the vast thousands who read boards like this just to see what's up in this thing called radio.. It isn't about reinflating an ego. Mine has been fullfilled MANY times over. If you disagree, then you have NO knowledge of me at ALL. I would love to meet some of these folks one on one...alone...to see why they have SO much venom for one person..or a handful. I bet you'd never show up.

I know that ANYone in the entertainment world today is subject to all kinds of ridicule or adulation and worse over-the-top fanatics... It's what our society has become...celeb addicts. Even the "C" level folks. For better or for worse. But if ya have to make PERSONAL attacks, at least do it like a MAN instead of a person hiding behind his mother's skirt, then expecting a comeback.

One more time...repeat after ME...it's ALL about the SHOW..and getting people to SEE/HEAR it. Marketing 101.1. So give it up. It's boring and frankly not worth any more of MY attention or anyone attached to me in any way. (I implore you to ignore it too!!)

I hope all of you dads have a fab weekend...those that have enough *$#& to BE dads.

BE BIG!

I have known Burns, Puker and Big Jay. I can put this to bed easily

Burns is a very talented individual who has been at the same broadcast position for the last 30+ years in NYC. he has a vast knowledge of radio both past and present.

Puker is one of those unsung heroes of radio, who is always an excellent listen whenever he is on (and here's hoping to hear from you again)

Big Jay can still blow the doors off, and I have no problem with what he did by posting info on the show. The Dan Ingrams of the world don't think enough of their listeners to connect off the air as well as they do on the air. Jay is not like that at all.

All three actually have the same goals in mind... great radio!!!!

To R.F.:

No, you're copping-out. That is not what you were doing. You were spreading a story you'd heard. There ain't no excuse for that... and when it's a story you're repeating about a person who's right there "in the room" with you, when it's not framed as a question ("Say, Famous, did ___ actually happen?"), then the only reason you possibly would be doing it, would be to try and embarass that person. Especially in light of the fine things you've been saying incessantly about my Radio work, here.

(BTW, you are wrong about those. I am the world's greatest broadcaster, living or dead, and God's gift to Radio... and modest?? You bet! ;) Proving, I guess, that what they say about opinions..!!)

At any rate, the story isn't even close to being true; and if I actually had gotten a station sued, I probably would not be too embarassed to talk about it... my life, which I've lived more or less decently, is an open book. So I don't even see the point of what you were trying to accomplish there.

Harry, Harry!.. with all the days and evenings we spent together, laughing it up, taking pot shots at The Idiots together... listening to your Joe Franklin stories... you would challenge my claim, to try and make me look silly?

What I said is accurate. But I just may be working INCOGNITO (no wait, I'm working "in New York", nyuk nyuk...). So e-mail me, ya goofball, and I'll tell you where to find me and why I'm "Undercover Famous"! 8)

With all of these out of work djs, including the ones listed above, CBS-FM opts to have Jeff Mazzei talking into a computer as the all night show.

Radio Truth...i noticed you bash other oldies stations on this board. From what i've read you trash others and brag about how great NYC radio is. Now you're slamming one of New York's finest Jay Sorenson.

Oops there's the door bell...looks like the mailman has arrived with your Water Wiggle just in time for Summer :D

HEYA Big Jay!! Since you gave me a shout on my board, I figured I'd travel to New Yawk and post on yours!!! hee hee. This is so much fun. The internet is getting me in contact with SOOOO many people I knew way back when.

Actually, one of these days, I'd love to work in NY. As you know, I worked in Philly, then went to SF and worked there a loooong time, and now I'm in la la land. But, I'm still a Joisey girl at heart!

well...wish me luck. I'm on standby for a tylenol commercial (I'm in SAG too, how disgusting can you get?) they were filming, giggle, giggle, my (say this in an Arnold voice) MUSCLES!!! I don't have body building kind, it was the kind I got from doing Archery! (I'm an NAA certified coach@!O)

hugs!!!
Meemster
p.s. do you ever see/hear Andre Gardner?? Where is he now??? I remember he and I were the two teenaged whippersnappers...
