Does anyone see WYAY getting rid of Don Imus soon? I hear alot of buzz about new local live jocks like Al Hardee coming on the air on True Oldies 106.7. Does anyone have any updates?

1) No.

Citadel wants to keep Imus on in the #8 market for the extra ad dollars. There was a thread a while back discussing this at length.

2) If there are any, even rumors, believe me, they will be discussed to death on this board.

Q

I don`t know..... Randy and Spiff do have alot of very loyal listeners. They lost alot of them at Fox 97 and Cool 105.7 because of a very small Oldies playlist. Randy is under contract and working for Clear Channel at WGST. Spiff Carner has make statements on his blog that he would LOVE to work at True Oldies 106.7 and has contacted them about it. The OM at WYAY is Mark Richards who ran Fox 97 in its final days from late 2001-early 2003. I remember him really praising Randy and Spiff publicly back in that era. The question is..... without Randy would Spiff be able to do his thing with another on-air co-host? I think so.... but it depends who it is. Boomer (former Morning guy and PD at OLDIES Lake 102-WLKQ bac in 1999-2000) has a good voice and did a good job on WLKQ. But I don`t know if he would have the chemistry with Spiff. I recall that Boomer had a lady co-host on WLKQ at one time and didn`t let her get a word in edge-wise. I personally think that former Fox 97 alumni B.B. Murray would make a great fit with Spiff!!!!!!!! Does anyone know where B.B. is now? Last I heard a few years ago, he was taking some time off helping care for his ailing wife. B.B. was always a very classy guy and good energy and voice on the air. At one time, I believe that B.B. had a top rated morning show in Macon, GA years ago.

It's very simple: The only reason this station and format even exist is to save cash. In case you forgot, a whole slew of people lost their careers when this format flipped happened. There is zero chance that this station will spend one penny on new live, local talent. Welcome to radio in 2008.

I don't see "Boomer and Spiff" as happening, except maybe just maybe if Imus implodes again and Citidal has to scamble on the local level to plug in that programming hole.

106.7's positioning statement should be "Imus In the Morning, Shannon All Day except For Afternoons" .... however that positioning statement would be confusing. Or maybe "Less Payroll, more oldies!" Which leads me to the other question does Scott Shannon ever get tired of hearing the sound of his own voice? I know he's a 'legend' but he seems to enjoy jocking the 'True Oldies' stuff just a little bit too much, I guess he's drank the Citidel kool-aide.

Agreed. Except for PM drive, there's no local talent. The rest of the sked might as well be from satellite pay-radio except for the ads.

The only exception would be if Imus tanks (for whatever reason) and they need someone local for AM drive.

As an aside, has the country market in ATL imploded? We lost one reasonably strong country station and another was stillborn. I would have thought that Kicks would be mopping it up with almost-V-103 numbers...maybe we'll see something in the next book.

Or are we getting more competition from all the country rimshots (WNGC, WTSH, Bear, WCON, the one out of Dahlonega, etc.)? Does anyone really know how much share Moby gets these days? Is he translating into more set-it-and-forget-it TSL for WNGC/WTSH/Bear after AM drive?

I agree with these posts about WYAY and Citadel wanting to do things on the cheap. I do think that more live shifts are being added on True Oldies 106.7 on the weekends. However, I guess that I also look at it from the point of view of $$$$$$$. If Spiff could be had for a good sum, and paired with someone that is on the payroll there (like Boomer), then it might be more of an advantage for WYAY to dump Imus and put on a live AM team. I do think that Spiff could really help out with sales and on-air commericals at True Oldies. Remember, all the ones that Randy and Spiff did at Fox 97? I guess that it will be wait and see. I think that it really depends on how much Spiff would be asking in terms of money and also for who ever his co-host would be. But, I think that many could see the arguement that Spiff could be a good asset for WYAY, if the Price is Right! I don`t see Citadel forking out big money for this, but they might fork out some, if they can see that Spiff could make them some serious advertising revenue. How do others think that Spiff would be like witout Randy? Would he work well in the afternoons with the new life afternoon d.j. that they have?

Imus is not going anywhere so Spiff fans should stop holding their breath. Imus is on in this market because Citadel did not pay all that money to Imus so they could not put him on in all their major markets. Imagine the local guy in Atlanta calling up HQ's and suggesting Imus be removed in place of Spiff Carner? that would be a very short conversation at this point.

They could move Imus to Radio Disney AM590 and Citadel could still claim "market #8". Although Don Imus interviewing Hannah Montana would be beyond creepy.

Well, I look at it this way too. Don Imus was on WQXI-AM The Zone 790 back in the late 1990`s-2000 and I remember that they had many billboards around town-they pais alot of money promoting him. And that was back 10 or so years ago, before Imus had all the baggage and negativity that he does now. If it was that valuable to WQXI (or Atlanta radio) he wouldn`t have been missing from this market for 8 or so years. I am NOT making the case that Spiff Carner should be pushed into the True Oldies 106.7 Am Morning slot and push out Imus. Like I said in my other post, it would all depend on how much money was being paid to Spiff and who his partner would be. How much money would they be paid? If not Randy as his partner, who would it be? Someone like Bob Bailey or Boomer? Would Spiff Carner be better off for the station as a roving afternoon guy breaking in to do spots from local car lots, restaurants, etc. A True Oldies fun and games department (like Fox 97 had for many years). My guess answer to all of these question is......it depends on the money involved. I would guess that IF True Oldies 106.7 decided to hire Spiff, they would at first use him as a promotions guy doing live commericals thoughtout the day and to attract former advertisers on Fox 97 and Cool 105.7 who used him over the years. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out!

1) WQXI (ie.. Big League Broadcasting) had no stake (no pin intended) in Imus' success. Citidal is the syndicator of Imus from it's flagship station WABC in New York, and is the major stakeholder in Imus' success.

2) Following WQXI, Imus was carried in Atlanta for many years on Dickey's AM 1340 & 1230.

3) Brand "Spiff" is not that powerful of a force that the oldies world revolves around. By this line of thinking, I can't believe both Cox and then Clear Channel blew up their oldies brands (ie ... Fox and Cool). They had Randy & Spiff !!!! Surely someone in the boardroom at Cox and Clear Channel declared "We can't dump oldies !!!! We've got Randy & Spiff!"

Disney kept all of their Radio Disney and ESPN Radio stations...those didn't go to Citadel.

Go to http://corporate.disney.go.com/investors/fact_books/2007/FB07ExcelData/MediaNetworksData.xls and click on the tab "Owned Radio Stations".

Is Disney`s Radio AM station in Atlanta really bringing in a lot of local advertising dollars? They have been atound for over 10 years, but I don`t reacll seeing them out and about with local promotions.

Back when my daughter used to listen to it on 590, they used to do remotes every so often, and occasionally had local promos (mostly dollar-a-holler type plugs coupled with the remotes instead of 30-60 sec. spots). Not sure about today because she listens to it on XM now and it's all national spots. I don't see the remotes out and about as much as I used to.

I would imagine the big bucks come from the national advertisers.

That's all correct, and 590 does do a lot of remotes/events with their one Atlanta personality. Her name was Totally Taylor unless they've changed since last year.

Bob Bailey may join Randy and Spiff soon on True Oldies 106.7!!!!!!!
