Boston radio ratings October 2020

Is that a first for BZ, --a #1-- I don't remember seeing it?
BZ-FM not doing bad either.

"News Radio 1030" ties at #1 with WROR.

Kiss remaining very strong, while "The Sports Hub" makes a very nice jump too!

Significant drop for Magic.

WRKO reaches 6.0, jumping over WZLX 5.9

Big 103 breaks 3 share!

"The River" is doing fantastic for an Indie owned station.

Both iHeartMedia and Beasley own the the Top 6!

Just about every other station in the area are maintaining their average.

How often do you see an AM station at #1, and two AMs in the Top 5?

Meanwhile, there are threads saying "AM is dead." Maybe it is, but not in Boston.

Why isn't WZLX listed ?

Is Nielsen using a new ratings methodology and is it causing this station shuffle ?

WZLX is listed as #6, below WRKO and above WMJX, in the RadioInsight list, but on the Radio-Online list it's on the bottom with an "N/A", but both sites say their sources are Nielsen, and other than WZLX, they're identical.

For some reason, Radio-Online doesn't have a Nielsen rating for WZLX, but RadioInsight does.

One site noticed a gap in the Nielsen-supplied data and its editor went the extra mile to get the missing data.

The other just reprinted what Nielsen sent them.

The defenders / apologists of the old 103.3 Amp Radio sure have been quiet lately!

Format flip should've occurred even sooner than it did, but I'll give Entercom credit for ultimately making a wise move.

How much longer is iHM going to continue with its debacle at 97.7 ? (To their credit, they have put some serious wind in WRKO's sails.)

90% of AM stations are dead as they do not cover Post-WW II suburban expansion.

There are only a few major markets with 3 or more total market signals, day and night.

In fact, in the top 100 markets, there are only about 170 total stations that cover 80% of the market day and night or better. So nearly all metro area AM stations are inadequate and can't compete.

Also, keep in mind that those two AM stations have very little listening in the 25-54 sales demos. Neither, in fact, is even in the top 15 in 25-54.

WRKO is not a top 15 biller. WBZ still is, but they have lost about a third of their billing level in the last 5 years (not counting this current horrible year).

If WRKO is able to maintain some of their recent audience gains into 2021 (which is certainly a dubious proposition), they should be able to tack on some new $$$.

Strong biller or not, COVID or not, WRKO's recent numbers are astounding.

There are a few stations where this isn't that uncommon. WBEN Buffalo, WHAS Lousiville, WLW Cincinnati, WHAM Rochester, KNBR and KCBS in San Fran. Maybe a few more - WBBM Chicago but they have an FM simulcast (but before they had it pulled number one a lot/most of the time).

In many markets from what I see you have 1 maybe 2 legacy type stations with good coverage that is right there at the top consistently (maybe not number 1 though).

There are some "AM" markets like Buffalo where you have WBEN, WGR and WECK all doing pretty well.

I will say hats off to iHeart though on this. Back in the Entercom days WRKO looked like it was on the way to bottom. With very little tweaking it is doing outstanding and has been on the up swing for a while. WBZ is always solid but it has been a while since they hit the top so this is icing on the cake.

Doubtful. The gains are all in really old listeners, and even heritage WBZ is losing revenue. WRKO does not share the reputation, heritage and high numbers that WBZ has.

They are still a 55+ station in a 25-54 radio world.

The 18-34 sample must be feeling the pandemic pressure...all of the rhythmic stations are struggling (outside of Kiss). The year over year on WBQT is staggering, WJMN down per usual but without Amp in the picture, somebody should be picking up mrk share...and the newer programming format on WKAF, forget about it (DOA)...

It is delightful to see News and Talk doing so well in Boston! WRKO had no identity before iHeart came in and gave it focus.

Jamn's share has doubled since the absence of AMP. It is albeit a 2 share now, but nonetheless!

If 97.7 (The Beat or Boston, or hardly a beat) was marketed much better, along with a tweak to the format, I think that they could build fairly decent numbers for the station. However, It is my intuition that they marketing WKAF as an adjunct to both Kiss and JAMN's audiences instead.

FWIW, iHeartMedia could in theory, simulcast one of their AM's, WBZ on election night to help with the listenership. I ln all likelihood, that is not going to happen.

But if major Boston Newspaper, and stick neck out to endorse... then as old saying that keeps repeating "anything is possible!"
