Braves to 680, 100.5

Aaaand another shovel of dirt on 790. All I can say to 680 is good work and please pull Celini off the Titanic before she goes under.

Pappy Shapiro must be spinning in his grave and he isn't even dead.

The Buck Belue pre-game show sounds like amateur hour. It is hideous. Figure out but hire Dimino "He's a baseball, man" according to Lou Pinella

Not sure what the deal with dave is saw a new billboard today on 75 ad the color scheme was pink and with a large orange 92.9? Not the colors on their website so it looked odd. Certainly not the colors for a Falcon station.

Post 1501. Thanks Neil for pointing it out.

The question now is.. which group will flip to sports first? CBS Radio or Cumulus?

Now would be the perfect opportunity for CBS to flip Dave to sports-talk. They already have Falcons rights, so it's not like it would be an empty effort.
You mean after they just had a great book showing in the top 10 in the key demo? There is no way CBS is flipping DAVE at this point. The time to do it was after the Michelle Engel disaster.

Neil's dead-on. Dave is on somewhat of an upswing and they're doing it at very little expense, to boot. Sportstalk is much more expensive to operate from a payroll perspective (unless you go all syndicated). Also, I don't think the Braves will be good for Rock 100. If they were still primarily classic rock it might make more sense (as with 96Rock. although I can't remember if that was a success), but 100 has just gone "Quality Rock" with the obvious intent of going head-to-head with Dave. Problem is, that type of listener wants to hear music, not wall-to-wall Braves games/Braves talk/Braves promotions/Braves interviews/etc. Dave can get away with Falcons because (as I believe someone earlier pointed out) it's only one day a week for 16 weeks, but the Braves season is loooooooooong and very intrusive on day-to-day listening.

April is a long ways away. They can shift the music played also. Dave has shifted there music over time. 100.5 can do the same go slightly harder under the Quality Rock moniker.

One thing no one has picked up on yet: Sports teams (pro or large college) want 50kw AM's or 100kw FM's. The Braves are settling for 12kw on FM? This is confusing to me.....

Its not what they're "settling" for. It is all they could get. The Braves were dragging the bottom line down at SB and at CC. SB does not want them back. CC didn't have the cash.
25 years ago, this would have been unthinkable but let's face it, radio no longer matters as much as MLB's love affair with the regional sports nets, Fox, ESPN and TBS, the MLB Network, MLB EI and MLB TV.

You could argue that the Braves upgraded their AM signal; WCNN booms out nicely during the day, better than WGST, and has a better night signal except perhaps to the NE. There's only one better AM in ATL, and they aren't biting. Yet another reason to lament ATL only having one class A clear; we're the biggest market with only one, except Houston with none (might be wrong about Houston).

On the FM side, simuling sports on FM is still in its infancy, and is usually done to make up for shortcomings on the AM side (such as a weak night signal). Additionally, the choice of FM partner is usually dependent on the choice of AM partner--nobody wants to put the games on a competitor's FM if you can keep it all in-house.

Looking at ATL's 100k (or thereabouts) FMs:

92.9--They still have the Falcons to keep them busy, at least for now. No good AM side for CBS.
94.1--Poor fit and Lincoln probably doesn't want to make 94.1 any more expensive or complicated than they have to.
94.9--CC isn't interested.
95.5--Cox isn't interested.
96.1--See 94.9.
97.1--See 95.5
98.5--See 95.5
99.7--Poor fit; Cumulus could easily move the games there from 100.5 in the future if there is sufficient demand/additional money down the road.
101.5--Neither the Braves nor Citadel probably had the money to make this happen. Plus Kicks is in a music war with the Bull.
103.3--Poor fit and they are already the top-rated FM in ATL, and have been for a long while.
104.1--See 95.5. Plus they are still rather rimshotty with their SW tower, and they have their hands full already with V-103 and Radio One.
104.7--Not a good fit at all. Although a Braves deal with WGKA and The Fish would be interesting. At least they wouldn't have to deal with callers trying to get Skip Caray's goat by asking him about the "nutgrinder" pitch anymore.
105.7--See 94.9
106.7--I wonder if the Bravos considered a deal similar to Tech's with 790 AM and 106.7 FM. However, what you'd gain on the FM side you'd lose on the AM side.

In addition to the northeast, doesn't 680 have a big null in Cobb County at night? If they wanted, 1230 could fill in, but I've seen no mention of that.

At least on paper, it's not as big as the NE null, but back in the day Tech fans in Cobb always complained about spotty reception of hoops games on 680. Using 1230 as a fill-in for Cobb is a great idea. Of course, that's what the FM is for...and I don't think that 1230 would buy them anything that 100.5 doesn't have already.

I love this new deal. Baseball on a sports station? Who would have believed it? Now I have another political talk show alternative at night instead of balls and strikes.
