BREAKING NEWS: CBS 3 (KYW-TV/DT) ANCHOR ARRESTED

From another thread but relevant here ....

Yes, people delivering the news may sometimes be there as much for their looks as anything else. That said, being an attractive person does not automatically negate one’s abilities, and to dismiss someone solely because they are attractive and on TV is every bit as superficial and shallow as putting someone without talent on the air because they look good—and it is a credit to organizations that don’t cast aside older staffers simply because their looks have diminished.

Many of us (collectively) respond more to attractive people. Such is life. I happen to be extremely unattractive (ok, ugly), and even if I was the greatest journalist the world had ever seen, I wouldn’t belong on any TV station, anywhere. I’m not bitter that people who hit the genetic lottery have certain doors open to them that I don’t. I have my own God-given attributes, and choose to use those to the best of my ability.

It's interesting that this and the John Ogden thread come up at the same time. Here we have two examples of local TV people who make their living being nice to look at behaving like Paris, Brittany and the rest. It's evident such people are hired for their looks, not their smarts or their winning personalities. Ogden, at least, has to ad lib and work in front of a green screen. Alycia giggles and reads a TeleprompTer. This is clearly the lowest level of show business. These people call themselves "journalists" but they are really spokesmodels. They can't be actors because that requires hard work and talent.

I was watching Sports Final tonight on Ch. 10 and when it was over I left it on into the beginning of the newscast. I was pretty surprised that 10 covered the Alycia Lane story, mentioning a competing station. They showed her Ch. 3 headshot and everything.

I also watched Action News this evening and they did not mention it. I guess that's the difference between being the leader, or one of the also rans.

Having worked for Tom Bigby at WIP, I was raised "in the business" to not mention a competing station...EVER, and I still believe in that philosophy.

That may be OK for a sports talk host or a DJ but we are talking about news broadcasts here. It's bad enough that news broadcasts too often turn into promos for the station, it's personnel, shows the network carries and for advertisers. Blacking out stories is a complete sell-out. Should the stations still on the air in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre not mention the stations knocked off the air by collapsed towers? Maybe this Bigby isn't right about everything.

Please, don't judge this woman before she is proven guilty. NYC Cops treat Blacks and Latinos like garbage. I am surprised that they would cross a white woman. They don't usually do that. They just happen to cross a white woman with means. Because she has money to battle those fools in court, the case will be dropped. If the State decides to take this case to trial, a Manhattan jury will find her innocent. Poor Blacks and Latinos are given Public Defenders who usually strike a Probation deal with the State. This happens even if the defendant is innocent.

Ms. Lane doesn't have anything to worry about. She has money for good legal representation.

Good legal representation won't keep her job.

Read the complaint. She told a female cop, "I don't give a f___ who you are. I am a reporter you f___ing dyke." The New York Post reports she said "f___ing dyke bitch."

The Post says an Lane, Booker and another couple were in a cab stuck in traffic behind a slow moving unmarked police car. When the cop car stopped at a light, one of the guys (who, cops say, appeared intoxicated) jumped out of the cab, went up to the police car and yelled, "I don't care if you're a cop. Drive faster." The cops got out of their car and started questioning the guy and Lane jumped out of the cab and got in the face of the cops with a camera. The complaint says she literally placed the camera against the cop's face. The cop grabbed her arm to move the camera off his face and that's when Lane made her "statement" to the cop. The Post says she then "walloped" the cop in the face.

In addition to going after a married football player with her emailed bikini shots, the Post says Alycia had an affair last summer with a married CBS2 (New York) newscaster. The guy is married to a former Playmate of the year but "reached out" to Lane after reading about her bikini photos.

Her slurs against lesbians and women may cost her the support of the politically correct crowd. Her bad behavior cost her any credibility as a "reporter."

She should be fired now.

Ms. Lane's attorney said that she didn't call the female cop anything. Were there any witnesses to this slur/assault? Her attorney is gonna make the state prove this to a jury (if it goes to trial). Ms. Lane isn't dealing with a Public Defender. NYPD isn't going to walk over this woman the way they walk over blacks and latinos in NYC. This is a different ballgame.

Ms. Lane's attorney said that she didn't call the female cop anything.

Of course, that's his job.

Please, don't judge this woman before she is proven guilty.

You seem to have judged the cops already.

Because she has money to battle those fools in court, the case will be dropped.

You seem to be OK with that.

Her attorney is gonna make the state prove this to a jury (if it goes to trial).

The burden of proof is always on the prosecution. That's how they system works.

Cop or no cop, she hit someone. It's still assault.

She hit someone....I dont know about that.
Witnesses please!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Dude,

OK, you don't much like or trust cops. I get it. Me, too.

You object to police mistreatment of minorities. Me, too.

But given all that, why do you condone celebrity bad behavior - chronic bad behavior - from a privileged character used to special treatment?

I have a little wallet card from the ACLU I always carry ("What To Do If You're Stopped By The Police"). First thing it says: "Be polite and respectful. Never bad-mouth a police officer." There do's and don'ts. She failed to follow most of them. Stay calm. Don't get into an argument ... Don't run ... don't touch ... don't resist .,.. Don't complain on the scene or tell the police that they're wrong, etc.

Of course, she doesn't need to watch herself like the rest of us. She's special. When she's in trouble she had people who make bad things go away. And you really approve?

The cops are saying that she behaved badly. I’m not sure if I believe that. I live in Jersey City, but work across the river in Manhattan. I see/deal with the NYPD every day. I have seen NYC Cops beat black and Latino men. Those men are then charged with assault.

My best friend is a NYPD Sergeant. He has been with the department for 17 years. You would not believe some the stories that he tells me. He witnessed one of his cops beating the hell out of a Latino man about 3 weeks ago because he asked why he was being stopped on the street. The cop punched him in the face and told him not to talk back. He was then charged with assault. I asked my buddy why didn't he report this incident. He told me that he has 3 years before he retires. He didn’t want to get involved.

That young Latin guy is poor and had get a Public Defender. He/She will probably get this guy probation and a record. He is going to have a hard time getting a job with that record. His life is ruined.

Do your research JerseyDude...Alycia Lane is part Hispanic/Latino. Guess that shoots your premise out of the water.

Posted in a parallel thread running on the Philly Radio board: The Philadelphia Inquirer reports Alycia will be off the air indefinitely.

The station and the anchorwoman agreed that she would start vacation today, a station spokeswoman said. She previously had been scheduled to start two weeks' vacation next Monday.

Her return date has not been determined. Station management is taking a wait-and-see approach.

Kyle,

That explains why the cops screwed with her in the first place. They thought she was some poor hispanic woman from the Bronx with no money. Boy, were they in for a big suprise when they found out that she is an educated latina with money who could fight bull charges.

Thanks for clearing that up Kyle
