BUY AN HD RECEIVER NOW

I had my doubts about HD, but I am now NOT buying XM or Sirius. There are currently 15 new HD2 stations broadcasting in Chicago, all commercial free. WLIT HD2 is studio quality stereo feed of Real Oldies, not to mention that 104.3 HD2 has all the live DJ's on it giving weather updates and Fred Winston, Dick Beondee, and so forth. 102.7 HD2 is called Dusties oldies. Also I like the all 80's at 101.9 HD2 and all news is now at 105.9 HD2. Real Jazz is playing at 95.5 HD2, and 97.1 HD2 is incredible! Radio has finally gotten it right. Although I am not a "Dance" music fan, 96.3 HD2 is on the air 24/7 commercial free. I bought the Boston Acoustics at Tweeter and it ROCKS. Now I have to get this for my car! -Skeez

<font color=3333ff>So where can they be found and for how much? Soon I will be buying a new radio for a new car I'm planning to get and that might be a smart option for me to get one.

Although I'm not sure they got a AM/FM/HD/CD/Cass combo. I'm really interested in a CD/Cass combo that I recently saw at Fry's since I always aircheck on tape when I travel.

don't expect the digital streams to cover as well as the analog. Hope you live and travel in the strong signal areas.

WHAT??? No 8-track option? :)

I'm excited to see how HD unfolds over the next five years. With the additional broadcast channels, I believe the ratings will splinter even more and radio sales should prove more of a challenge.

I, too have an HD radio and find that the HD channels on FM sound perfect, like CD-quality. Now, I'm just curious what your experiences are with the HD-2 channels. When I have them on, they sound ALMOST perfect, but not as full and strong as the regular main channel station on HD (i.e. WLIT-HD sounds fuller, crisper than WLIT HD2). Do you find the same thing?

Otherwise, I love the idea of HD radio... makes it a lot easier than those subscription fees of satellite!

What happens once the digital signal starts to weaken? Does it pop in and out like the satellite radio signals do, or fade, or suffer static or what? I've yet to experience HD at all, so I don't have any firsthand experience. I've heard many times that the HD signal strength will not be as good as analog signals are or have been.

I have a late model Nissan Maxima with one of those complex premium stereos that's interlaced with the climate control and a hundred other functions on my car. Unless the aftermarket surprises me, I don't think I'll be installing an HD radio in my car anytime soon, unfortunately.

My ford taurus is the same way. I was able to get a whole new faceplate at tweeter for $40.00. I now have a much nicer Pioneer radio w/xm. (deh-p6700mp, and new speakers too.)
It was waay worth it for me. The older radio sucked.

Re: dirty secret

We've had a HD radio to play around with here at Nextmedia Joliet.
Our Star 96-7 is on HD. When the HD radio can't pick up the digital signal
it just goes back to analog. With the Boston radio we had here I was
suprised in the quality of the sound from analog to digital, and was
really blowen away with the HD AM signals we picked up. They sounded
more like a studio montior feed rather than a broadcast feed.

Yes indeed. The transition from HD to analog is quite smooth. Unfortunately for HD2 there is nothing to fall back on, so it just goes away.

AM HD will knock your socks off! Especially if you have a decent AM HD station like WRLL, or WKSH in Milwaukee where you can hear the stereo. WBBM was having troubles IMHO as their voices sounded a tad digitized.

HD is still very young yet. I would love to see the receiver manufacturers do a better job at HD senstivity. I have had one engineer tell me about a receiver (dont know the model) where the HD hangs on longer than the analog. THAT I would LOVE to see!!!

Here's a link to the Ibiquity website where they display all the various products out or coming out...

http://www.ibiquity.com/hdradio/hdradio_hdproducts.htm

Keep an eye out for 'MULTICAST CAPABLE'... The Kenwood in-car is the best right now, but you have to pre-order it and make sure it has the multicast capability... they manufactured the initial ones without the multicast and they needed to be sent to Kenwood for the upgrade... they didn't charge for it, but it took a bit.

The Boston Acoustics unit is great and is available in Tweeter throughout Chicagoland right now...

The Radiosophy unit will mostly likely be a mail-order unit and be available late-march... the portability will be cool (it's kind of like an IPod Sound Dock), but no one's seen or heard an actual test model yet and it's had it's share of delays... it looks like they wanted to get it RIGHT the first time, which I commend.

The Polk unit is really cool with the DVD capability... can't wait for my pre-order to come in, but that's probably 2nd quarter too.

Overall, some have mentioned the issue of the Digital/HD signal not being as strong as the analog... this is true... The FCC mandates that you can only broadcast the Digital Signal to 85% of your analog signal reach, however it's been my experience that with a powered FM antenna (i.e. one of those plug in ones) that even as far as western Naperville you can get most of the downtown Chicago stations without a problem.

Also, here's another site to look at..

www.diceelectronics.com

They're making an aftermarket conversion for OEM radios for most of the asian vehicles... in other words, you'll be able to have your current car radio converted to an HD radio by having the kit installed... no idea on price yet, but my guess is it will be in the $500 range...

Reality is that prices WILL come down once more products come to market... we're still early in HD, but that's the coolest thing... with about 20 different NEW STATIONS in Chicago right now (with very few units available), just think of how many more will be in demand when the public starts to learn about it.

You're going to see some incredible buzz in the second half of 2006 and it's gonna be a lot of fun!

Wow! I would love to see that, too! If you happen to come across any other information, please let us know. :)

Thanks for posting that overview of HD radio availability!

By "powered FM antenna," do you happen to mean something like this? http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/602-3447673-5399822?_encoding=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B00009UHYC I do not live in Chicago, much less Illinois, but I do live in what is considered to be a fringe area. I live about 2 1/2 hours from Albuquerque and I can get those stations in the car and with my Grundig radio okay. Do you happen to have any idea if I might be able to get HD signals? Several Albuquerque stations are already broadcasting in HD...

I am looking forward to the Radiosophy radio...do you happen to know how sensitive to signals it might be?

Thanks!

Correct... they average powered antenna is usually about 29.99 or so.

I have a feeling that every market will be different on the actual range because of various things like the size of the metro as defined by the FCC and how 'wide' of a signal they allow metro stations to broadcast. A good site to find out your stations signal coverage is

www.radio-locator.com

Just enter the call letters and you'll get a station profile. Then scroll down the page and you'll see a link for 'View Coverage Map'. That should give you a pretty good idea, but with the HD Signals, unfortunately you won't know until you try it.

As for the radiosophy unit, no one really knows what the sensitivity is going to be and how strong the antenna will be. They're working on some final 'fixes'... no clear word on when production will begin... my guess is availability will be sometime in early 2nd quarter, but it could be sooner.

Check out www.radiosophy.com I don't know if they have any press releases or updates there though.

xm radio receiver as low as 29.99..hd receiver as low as 599.99?? you call that free radio? 599.99 for 7 or 8 hd channels? i'll stick with xm 100+ digital channels..and no commercials on the music channels! plus there are less than 100 hd channels nationwide with none in this market(baton rouge). plus the stations only come in for about 30 miles vs. the 70 of regular fm radio. or thats what the review in monitoring times said.<P ID="signature">______________

You really should get your facts straight...

661 stations on the air with HD:

New HD-2 channels to remain commercial-free for at least two years:

Except that it's not true. My HD signals (both are Class B FM's) have a range of about 40 miles.

40 miles is not very far. i live over 50 miles from every transmitter in baton rouge. they all come in clear here. if they were in hd. none of them would come in here.<P ID="signature">______________

At this point why woul did care about those markets? In time they will have HD as well. Are you in those markets? Have you even ever been there? Why are you so against HD Radio?

I paid $285 for a Panasonic HD radio. Just bought a brand new Sanyo off of EBay for $70. Radiosophy should be available end of March.
