SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A fast-moving vegetation fire erupted on the hillsides above Simi Valley on Wednesday morning amid extreme red-flag conditions, prompting evacuation orders and school closures as it spread to 1,300 acres.

The so-called Easy Fire began shortly after 6 a.m. near the 200 block of West Los Angeles Avenue. Homes in nearby residential neighborhoods were immediately threatened by the flames, even after winds initially seemed to be blowing the fire in a direction away from houses.

Hours later, the Ventura County Fire Department said 6,500 homes were in danger. One structure was destroyed.

Helicopters were seen performing water drops on the blaze while at least one fixed-wing aircraft dropped a payload of Phos-Chek.

Here are some updates in Northern California over ongoing fire threats.

VALLEJO, Calif. (KGO) -- Crews were busy clearing trees from the charred hillsides around the Cal Maritime campus in Vallejo, fearing the dry eucalyptus could erupt again.

"And you can see up here it's still smoldering and may reignite," says Chief Dannny Gordon, Cal Maritime Police Department.

The remains of blackened palm trees lay on the ground, just a few yards from the Academy's famed training ship Golden Bear, anchored in the shadow of the Carquinez Bridge. Higher on the hillside, North Bay Representative Mike Thompson surveyed the damage with State Senator Bill Dodd.

"The Vallejo fire department did a great job, and I have to assume it was CAL FIRE who came in and did a chemical drop on this thing early," says Dodd.

"We have to figure out where we go from here, we need a continuous and safe source of energy throughout the north State and that's a big priority," echoed Thompson.

and another in Sonoma County

SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) -- The Kincade Fire has scorched 76,825 acres and is only 30 percent contained as it continues its destructive path across Sonoma County. This morning is a critical time for firefighters as gusty winds pick up.

Overnight, winds gusts hit 50-55 mph on peaks in the North Bay. The gusts will remain at 30-40 mph through the morning, but will taper to 10-20 mph range by noon. A Red Flag Warning will remain in effect until 4 p.m. when wind speeds will be mostly below 10 mph. After the wind event, the weather will improve for the next five to seven days, but no rain is in the forecast any time soon.

In the lower elevations, CAL FIRE said the winds died down significantly this morning, especially along the Hwy 101 corridor. Firefighters said there were no new evacuations ordered overnight no new spot fires. Last night spot fires burned in northeast Sonoma County. The flare-ups were on Chalk Hill Rd, near Foothill Regional Park in Windsor.

The fire has destroyed 206 buildings, half of which were homes. More than 90,000 structures are being threatened with full containment expected next Thursday.

I have a number of old friends in Marin and Sonoma counties in northern CA and they are telling me parts of Sonoma have been without power since last Friday and in Marin just a few days less.

Many people have self evacuated since the air is so lousy it is difficult to breathe - even if they are not that close to the fires.

Small towns including those along the Russian River and the small town of Windsor are completely empty.

After trying to blow up several towns on the S.F. peninsula a few years ago (gas lines) and the whole town of Paradise last year PG&E is going to take it in the shorts now as soon as the lawyers can fire up their fax machines.

And this doesn't count the fires in metro L.A. in the southern part of the state.

Now a PG&E Crew was inspecting power lines in the Vallejo area where the Carquinez Bridge fire took place.

VALLEJO, Calif. (KGO) -- Spotted at about 3 p.m. Monday, PG&E crews appeared to be inspecting lines, driving over the ridge in south Vallejo where the Sky Fire started Sunday morning.

VIDEO: Harrowing eyewitness video of flames near I-80 in Vallejo

Flames charred an entire hill in less than 10 minutes, threatening homes and forcing evacuations. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

At its peak - the Sky Fire jumped 1-80 and engulfed the Carquinez Bridge in smoke and flames -- a scary sight from our SKY7 cameras and from the ground. It wasn't contained until late afternoon Sunday.

This is what Cal Maritime woke up to -- a building destroyed. Some sailboats were also damaged. The Academy evacuated about 200 students, many were trying to return Monday.

"It was pretty scary, I just ran fast," said Jesse Swineheart, a Cal Maritime student.

Update another fire reported in SoCal.

JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Several structures were destroyed by a brush fire that was sparked by a crash at the end of a police chase and went on to blacken at least 360 acres in Jurupa Valley Thursday morning, authorities said.

The fire was burning near the intersection of 46th Street and Crestmore Road and began around 12:39 a.m., prompting evacuations and forcing school closures, according to fire officials.

The blaze continued to rage at 0% containment at noon.

Cal Fire Riverside said at least three residential structures, two outbuildings and one mobile home were destroyed in the fire. Residents attempted to fight back the flames with water hoses.

Robert Ramirez came to help evacuate the horse of a Cal Fire firefighter friend who was battling another blaze up north.

"He called me about 3 in the morning, and he's like, 'Hey Robert, go give me a hand, 'cause I can't be there. So, hitched up the truck and trailer and headed over here," he said.

The first unit on scene reported less than an acre of brush burning, but the wind-driven blaze quickly grew at a rapid rate of spread, according to Cal Fire Riverside. Cal Fire spokesman Jeff LaRusso said the inferno started at the end of a police pursuit, where a suspect crashed near brush that quickly ignited and spread through the Santa Ana River bottom.

News video from the scene showed a sedan fully engulfed in flames.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- Firefighters were gaining the upper hand Thursday afternoon on the wind-whipped Hillside Fire that erupted in San Bernardino early in the morning, scorching some 200 acres.

By early afternoon, firefighters said they had reached 50% containment, after the blaze had forced mandatory evacuations and ravaged several homes.

San Bernardino County firefighters first responded to the area of Highway 18 at Lower Waterman Canyon at about 1:38 a.m. as strong winds carried the flames amid extreme red flag conditions.

The Hillside Fire spread rapidly amid strong Santa Ana winds, reaching 200 acres by about 2:30 a.m., officials said. Six homes were damaged or destroyed, as were two outbuildings.

By 1 p.m., the size estimate remained steady at 200 acres. Crews remained on-scene performing mop-up duties and looking for hotspots.

One firefighter was transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

Now a fire is reported in the Inland Empire.

Now a new fire is reported in Santa Paula.

SANTA PAULA (CBSLA) – The Maria Fire which broke out Thursday evening on a hillside south of Santa Paula grew Friday morning to 8,730 acres, with mandatory evacuations still in place for thousands of people.

The fire broke out just after 6 p.m. in rugged terrain on South Mountain, off of Bradley Road and Solano Verde Drive. Flames could be seen for miles as the fire moved quickly through dry brush and trees.

At least two homes have burned. The area has lots of large properties, ranches and orchards, which have been helping fuel the fire. There was still no containment as of Friday morning.

“When they (the ranches) do have the leaves or the overgrown material, it is making this fire grow,” Ventura County Fire Capt. Brian McGrath told CBS2. “However, that is one of the huge main sources that we are trying to protect. That is an infrastructure out here that we understand is the livelihood of some of these ranch owners.”

Mandatory evacuations were issued for about 7,500 people in Santa Paula, Somis and Saticoy. About 1,800 structures are threatened. Evacuations were in place for the area south of the 126 freeway, north of Los Angeles Avenue, east of Vineyard Avenue and west of Balcom Canyon Road.

https://abc7.com/maria-fire-sce-re-energized-power-line-shortly-before-blaze/5665671/

Now Southern California Edison is named in an investigation over its handling of the Santa Paula Fire.

SANTA PAULA, Calif. (KABC) -- Southern California Edison said Friday that it re-energized a 16,000-volt power line minutes before a nearby hilltop exploded into the Maria Fire that threatened thousands of homes.

SCE and other utilities had cut off power this week to hundreds of thousands of Californians to prevent windstorms from knocking down or fouling lines and sparking devastating fires.

As the winds eased in most locations, SCE began restoring power. It was re-energizing a circuit 13 minutes before a fire erupted nearby on a hilltop near Santa Paula, the utility told state regulators.

Erratic winds continued to bedevil firefighting efforts Friday at the Maria Fire, which has burned some 9,000 acres, threatens about 2,300 homes and other buildings, and prompted evacuation orders for nearly 11,000 people.

Eastern Ventura, Camarillo, Somis and Santa Paula were at risk, Ventura County fire officials said.

SCE said it had no information about the actual cause of the fire but will cooperate with investigators.

The utility released a statement to Eyewitness News:
