CALL THE NEW FORMAT - 97.5 MONDAY 9am

It's funny...I fly into Philly a lot, and take the rental car shuttle, and WJJZ was the favorite of all shuttle drivers. Don't know what that's worth.

I think a format that tries to keep the urban demo, but lose the mushy instrumental music would be a safe and easy change, rather than blow the whole thing up. Lately a lot of stations that do an abrupt change (like Movin' in LA) find that it can take years for the audience to discover the new format.

The broadcaster in me says that any format based strictly around music is not going to make a huge improvement in the ratings the station already had.

I heard that Rush's deal is up soon with WPHT. Maybe he's moving over to 97.5 as headliner on a new FM talk format? How great would that be?!!!! Greater Media's doing pretty well with FM talk in Boston.

Not if Clear Channel (which owns Rush's syndicator) doesn't have intentions of putting Rush on one of their own Philly sticks first.

If Greater Media does turn 97.5 to a talk station, I can definitely see them utilizing Michael Graham, either syndicating his show out of WTKK/Boston, or taking him out of Boston altogether and plunking him down on 97.5 to do afternoon drive. There has to be another local personality too. Maybe Irv Homer can come out of retirement. ;D

As far as syndicated fare (because it is inevitable) they can add Imus, Dave Ramsey (provided there's no conflict from WCOJ) and maybe Stephanie Miller.

If 97.5 goes talk and picks up Dave Ramsey they can force COJ to drop the show. It happened in Hartford in late 2006. 2 rimshot AMers carried Ramsey 5 days a week (one station carried him live, the other carried him on delay). Then the 50KW CBS owned news/talk station picked up Ramsey for Sunday afternoons and the two Rimshot stations dropped the show. One of the rimshotters double-ran Dr. Joy for a month and now runs STEPHANIE in Dr. Joy's old midmorning timeslot. The other rimshot station is now a waste of electricity.

AAA...'XPN's too hip for the room. And while you're at it, add a sense of humor...AAA needs to lighten up a little.

1) Hot Klezmer

2) Techno-yiddish

3) The All Curling Play by Play Channel

4) Non-stop horse races

5) "97.5 - The Gas" (all fart noises)

6) 97/5 FM - Roach Radio

7) All song parodies and novelty songs "BWAAAAA-FM"

8) "97.5 The Patriot" - All military anthems, Sousa marches, interspersed with speeches by the likes of MacArthur and Eisenhower. Pledge of Allegiance read at the top of each other by various celebrities and political officials.

9) All female talk shows and a week of the blues "WPMS" (that old gag)

10) Simulcast with WVLT

WTYM, the correct time, all of the time.

XPN "too hip?" - what, pray tell should a more mainstream AAA play then? XPN doesn't take chances on a lot of the more indie music that's out there.

Just a thought, What about an all- dance format on 97.5? What are your thoughts on this change?

I think you're all thinking too hard on this one. Look at their current website, look at the font, listen to what's on air at the moment. All I can say is that my wife was enjoying their music mix. She kept saying "Hey I like this song! That was a weird mix but I still like this song.....ooooh and this one too."

And here's another random thought - Huggy - remember him from Matt & Huggy? He's currently doing weekends at WTKK in Boston. Maybe Greater Media can pluck him from there and put him back on Philly radio with Matt.

I really don't understand why they don't give a more advertiser-palatable Urban mix (think heavy on '80s and '90s, with some newer stuff mixed in - and NO Soulja Boy rubbish) a try. They can get the older audience that most hip-hop stations (who are as focused on modern acts as your typical CHR) have long neglected.

I also think they can take a strong share of the Rock pie by programming a station with an edge. WMMR is Mainstream Rock, WYSP is now Classic Rock and WRFF are kind of a tame take on Modern Rock (for crying out loud, they play All American Rejects and Lifehouse), so I think there is definitely a market for an edgy Active or Modern Rock station - the owners of 97.5 just have to kick the door open.

Safe money is that we're getting yet another station in the market that targets females - either another soft AC like B 101 or the Hot AC sound that they're hinting at now. I wouldn't completely rule out Country either (which appeals primarily to women also - what happened to all the outlaws?).

97.5 is playing the same 15 songs over and over all weekend. Every liner is the same, except for the top of the hour.

an all dance station would be great and a huge surprise. However I see a talk station coming or a new ac to challange b101...............how boring.Even an active rock station would be welcome....btw wysp sounds awful...bad bad move.

You guys are thinking way too hard and much about this.

Programming to the PPM is pretty simple...keep it real clean...very little clutter...pick one message drill it home and play popular songs.

My guess...they did a music test with women in their 30's and early 40's. They are playing the highest testings songs over and over to attract cume...and pounding one message to convert that cume to be there for their launch.

Playing this mix all weekend and then being something else Monday morning would be a waste of time.

My guess....HOT AC (without an edge..."smooth HOT AC"...slightly younger than B101, and MY1061...more female than BEN)

When they flip formats tommorrow, I hope they flip there soundprocessing also. It sounds very 'flat' and dry. I think the smooth jazz preset is still running.
