Can WTQR bounce back?

Atticus, why don't you enlighten us to what you have heard from advertisers. I would love to hear.

Have you seen the Miller Kaplans ... I think ENT is getting a return on their investment. All the ENT and Dick properties are making $$ ... the only CC property that is making any $$ in comparison to last year is GBT and I would speculate that has a lot to do with Hispanic establsihed budgets are the new Hispanic designation went into effect last Spring.

I am not so convinced that TQR's legacy is as secure as some here think. The makeup of the Triad is changing with new people moving in the area who don't know TQR's past and only base their listening habits on what they hear today. Same thing happened with WFMY. You ask people who have moved here in the past 10 years who Lee Kinard was and they have no idea who you are talking about even though he ruled the TV airwaves for 5 decades.

You have people here that don't remember Billy Buck or Big Paul or the other "local" DJ's that were at TQR when it was the king with ratings that wre 3 or 4 times the next station. TQR is just another country station to them. And those numbers are growing as the memories decrease.

"The times, they are a changing."

One thing's for sure...it's gonna be an interesting battle. As I said earlier, the next several books will tell the tale. This likely doesn't mean anything, but I have noted that a couple of businesses I frequent (eateries) that were playing PAW have migrated back to TQR.

im sorry but i have to agree with the people that won't count TQR out yet................................................................................

yesssssssssss its a battle but i have to side wiht the person that said wolf has awakened a sleeping giant word on the street is a new morning show starts soon. she wouldnt say who or when but said sometime soon. With some time and effort tqr can "bounce back. just wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I Win!

One of the reasons TQR dominated for so long was they didn't need a competitor to force them to reassess their position. Back in the day, TQR always went through the self examination is if there was a serious competitor - which explains how they managed to fight off some pretty good ones over the years.

And it wasn't CC that mortally wounded the station - it was the CC that developed after the AM/FM merger. You have to remember that the people who took control of the market were those who had competed against the powerhouse for years and their heart wasn't in it!

Their first big $$ mistake was letting 35% of the NASCAR cup schedule get away and it went downhill from there.

Say, Mike, you wouldn't happen to have had anything to do with that deal now, would you?

Actually, they opened the door by refusing to air some of the non race programming. PRN was never happy with them. They could have kept it, but played the wrong cards!

You know, you seem like a really angry person to me. I don't care to share any comments with you. But, I can tell you that several accounts are probably burned for good. Since you're most likely one of the Sales Managers, maybe you can just start keeping an eye out for yourself. The arrogant attitude you project is most unattractive and it probably carrys over to your salespeople. Think about it.

Oh abcboy, or girl, whatever you really are, I'll bet you are the champion of the people at E-com!! They probably make a special point to walk by your cubicle to high five you for your unbridled courage to take on the tough talkers of radio-info! Why I be Brent himself (unless this is Brent... Hmmmmmm?), probably even throws you a bit of restaurant trade for your valiant efforts. Before you run out to Lane Bryant and buy a black dress for the funeral of your country competitor, consider a few things..

1) Spring was a good book for PAW and bad for TQR, but Wi was good for TQR and bad for PAW, Fa was good for paw, bad for TQR... Anyone sensing a pattern here? If you've spent any amount of time in this business you'll look at metro's like Charlotte and realize some books will go TQR's way, some will go PAW's.. It will really boil down to how many books get into places like Alamance County where there's a clear geographic advantage for one station..

2) It's fun to spike the ball in the end zone when things go your way, but try not to sound like an idiot.. A couple tenths of a point these days could seperate number 2 from number 12 but it's still a few tenths of a point. And the real PAW success is in the slightly better TSL (with honorable mention to some dayparts where TQR is suffering). Ratings still show WTQR still has more ears tuning in but they simply aren't hanging around as long. While that's a problem, it's a better problem than your cume saying bye bye...

3) Your client told you a TQR rep was dogging paw? CLIENT??? Oh, I'm sure it was a close and personal friend too right?? Ya'll probably lay around in stretch pants and your favorite racecar driver t-shirts watching Lifetime on the weekend together.. :D First off, for cred-sake don't say a "client" told you... You think clients don't minipulate their reps?!? You think client's don't court more than one rep and dish to one about the other.. Rule of thumb Greenhorn, clients don't tell you the good stuff about TQR, only the bad and vice-versa.

Since you challenged Atticus to spill what clients he's heard comments from, I think it only fair that you go first, since you brought it up and all.. I would LOVE to hear what you've heard from what clients? Since you brought it up and all... ;)

4) Success is all relative these days. paw and legends could turn their transmitters off today and TQR would never enjoy the 12, 15, 20 shares they once had. For that matter TQR and legends could shut down their operation and paw would never see the likes of shares in that range either. The media world had changed over the last 10 years and I'm fairly confident most everyone gets that so try not to sprain your arm patting your own ars about paw's tenth of a point slaughter. :-*

There are 1.5 million people in the Triad and arb surveys 2,000 people to determine what stations are most listened too. Difference in number two and number 9 is 3 tenths of a point. Is TQR what it used to be? Nope. Is paw the next best thing? Not in the ear of this beholder but I wasn't one of the 2,000 they asked. ;D The interesting thing is TQR hasn't played all of their cards and paw has so we'll have to sit back and see what tricks TQR will pull out of their hat now that they know what their dealing with.

On a personal level abc, relax a bit... You do sound stressed and angry... Buy a big bag of Funions, take in a Valerie Burtonelli movie on Lifetime and forget about radio. You seem a bit drunk off the company kool-aid. Sober up and remember the next report card from our FAULTY rating company will be here in three months. I'm sure they'll dredge up another 2,000 people to keep accurate minute by minute detailed station usage information. The country stations will trade licks here and there and it's going to be a long-long battle. I give credit where credit is due. paw has done a phenomenal job establishing themselves in this market and TQR was obviously not prepared for a competitor like paw. There's clear differences in the two stations but your average joe listeners will just flip back and fourth. I don't think however TQR is going to roll over and die and I think the early success of paw gives e-com the ammo to continue to battle. By the way, when I'm not a blogging programming expert I am an out of work announcer doing some underwear modeling on the side to make ends meet. Call me if you need some weekend partimers..

The RoundMound is right on target. TSL issues are more easily repaired than lost cume! Look for TQR to bounce back once they settle into a new morning show! I would anticipate some serious look at the music library and rotations.

One think I remember from the day TQR dominated was their in-house, call-out, music research. They made hundreds of calls a week and based their playlist on LOCAL research and listener reaction rather than some national playlist. I know it was an expensive proposition, but they billed seven or eight million a year.

There is no substitute for that local knowledge!

This new morning show for TQR has been "on the way" for some time.

...probably not much, being those cume and quarter numbers you're citing are most likely coming from Arb.

I do not even work for Entercom. So don't even start with that nonsense. And where is there any anger in one word that was posted? You are the one who sounds angry.

Personally, I find your comments most offensive. Attacking someone on a personal level for having an opinion is low to no class. You have no idea how cute I really am ! ;D

I stated what I heard TQR's reps were saying to clients, re-read the post and it is all there in black and grey.

BTW, I am don't do the stretchy pants, Funions, Lifetime nor am I a NASCAR fan. Grow up.

We're just saying that Arbitron is a crap-shoot. They're up, they're down, they can anhialate the #1 station in a single book - like all their listeners just tuned out all of a sudden for no reason. And all because of their crappy methodology. You can't gloat at big ratings because you may have to eat your words in the very next book! Never count any station out. Just when you think you've got 'em, they can make some smart moves and be right back at ya. I've seen it happen over and over. Be grateful for what you've got and be humble because you may have the next turn in the barrel. And, something else I've observed . . . when you're sitting way up at the top of the heap and you're sticking it to the client with those high rates, they just love it when you fall. There's no mercy from them at that point.

;DYou have no idea how cute I really am !

ABC, I fell for that line about the first year I was in radio in Cocoa beach, Florida.. Talking crap on the request line, I was 17 and the girl told me how cute she was!! Needless to say, I fell for it and went over to her house..Most of you know the outcome...Hmmmmmm "Got a great personality"...Hahah..Right! BIG APE!

Ape- did you grace the doors at WCKS?? CK-101?? Now THAT was a great sounding radio station. Even had the Pointer Sisters do a customized version of "Fire"

Pointer Sisters did a bunch of those "special" versions for stations around the country. Those were always cool. Huey Lewis did one, and Jefferson Starship. What were some others?
