Canadian stations in Buffalo

ADDS:
iron mike said changes are comin'
(tune in monday,6am). . .
wonders whaaaat could be going on?
hinted at a few things, but didnt say much.

The only other Canadian station that really draws a lot of Western NY listening is Toronto's CFZM (AM 740), which I guess these days could be classed as a "true oldies" station with no direct competitor based on the US side of the border.
Yes, since the Buffalo area lost music on 1230 and perhaps to a lesser extent, 1340 Lockport, there are no "nostalgia" stations like Music of Your Life, or America's Best Music, etc.... It's a shame actually. And on that front, AM 740 is rather inconsistent in their programming.

Whoops! That quote didn't come out right the first time!
But yes, it's a shame that 740 is the only one doing the old format.

It's a confused station, really. They can't decide wether to go after the former CFRB listener (the older of the bunch) or to stick with music.

I think they should just stick with the classic 50's-70's sound. They seem to do it best.

1440 WJJL is the "True Oldies" station, really. AM 740 is "Standards".

Yes, confused is the right term. But even the music is a tad unbalanced at times. It's not as consistant as the format should be. WJJL is indeed an oldies station. And it's the "standards" format that 740 tinkers with a bit too much.

Agreed, but I think the talk has to go.
mid days should be music driven, not talk formatted.
There is a nice old lady in the Beach area of Toronto running a second hand shop there.
She wishes AM 740 would stick with music.
I'm sure there are many others.

I know nostalgia (standards) formats (generally) aren't particularly profitable. Citadel's "Timeless" is calling it quits in February. 1340 WLVL was once one of their afilliates. It's also too bad that WECK 1230 switched from Music of Your Life... and then was yanked from Westwood One's "America's Best Music" (it might've been the other way around) which left the whole area void of Sinatra, Manilow, Carpenters, Bennett, etc.... WBTA 1490 was also (sort of) on that bandwagon, but in the last few years has taken more of an AC direction. I'm also recalling a few years ago that 1410 in Dunkirk had a standards format, before flipping to country I believe. Then of course there was Legends on 990 Rochester. They were almost like a 740 clone, with a mixed-bag of pop/standards.

I would think...somehow, there'd still be a market (in western New York) for the format... that somehow it could be viable.

Well one thing's for sure. Ratings were tellin' Buffalo that Classic Country is far less profitable than classic oldies at one point...still true today, but talk seems to be what fans of AM radio in Buffalo want more, I guess.

Even Hamilton's 820 Cham pulled the plug on Classic Country in favor of a talk radio format!
(Can 820 even pick up in Buffalo? I just dragged that into this conversation because it's slightly closer to Buffalo than Toronto radio is...)

CHAM runs 50,000 big ones! Yes, I think they get into Buffalo just fine.
