CBS-FM's Seven Day Weekend

How about CBS-FM playing EVERY #1 song in chronological order (as they peaked) from 1955 onward..that would be interesting!

I remember the legendary 99X played a syndicated special called "The Number One Radio Show" way back in the spring of 1979. It even featured a montage of every number one song from January 1, 1955 to December 31, 1978, which I still have on cassette somewhere. I believe it was a Westwood One Production.

A montage like the "History of Rock and Roll" ending (snippets of each song edited together) or all the songs played in their entirety (which I prefer)?

A to Z in the U's now (not to many u's and v's) Maybe they'll play Zappa's 1982 "Valley Girl" huh?

By the way, anyone notice that "Roundabout" was on vinyl? You could hear the pops and clicks. They could obviously get a digital copy in a snap, so that's a nice touch to throw on some vinyl here and there. Perhaps they needed a short version....

You have to check out CBS-FM for "Turntable Tuesdays." All day, once an hour, they play an actual vinyl record on an honest to goodness turntable. If you love vinyl, this is a real treat. One song, "Have I the Right," sounded like cr@p - it was so beautiful! Don't get me wrong, some of the digital stuff is the audio equivalent of a Michaelangelo restoration. You can hear things you never knew were there. But vinyl will always be special.

BTW, another show you should try out is Pat St. John on Sunday mornings from 10:00 EDT. He plays the regular rotation, plus great delights such as a capella Beach Boys tracks, and instrumental tracks by the Funk Bros. He relates all kinds of interesting facts, as well. I think you'd enjoy it.

Scooty430 Back to the A to Z.....I'd like to encourage the staff at WCBS to cook up some more cool stuff in the future. And please call up Jhani Kaye in L.A. and tell him to do similar things out here on KRTH.

Hey, radio USED to be this way, playing right off the 45's. A bit of flashback to the past...why not, during an A to Z, right? Also I've heard those 45's pops on Mazzei's Sunday Night countdowns, stuff so obscure, probably not even available as digital copies.

Yeah, love to see KRTH do the same (It'll be a shocker!!)

I like the every #1 song idea.

XM did that recently, beginning in the 20s up to the present - all the #1s back to back. (This was an "encore," after they had done the annual airing of every single Top 40 charting song in history 20s-00s, which they call "IT." I've yet to hear this "IT" - it's hard to know when they're going to air it, and I always miss it, no pun intended.)

But the XM #1 montage had no DJs, not even any mention of which song was which, so hearing it on CBS would be cooler. And XM's sound quality is really not very good. You feel fatigued after listening for awhile....

Good tip. I'm on that!

Viva Las Vegas...or should we say "Viva CBS-FM!!" :D :D

A KRTH classic..."Viva Tirado" from 1970....GREAT SONG!

First of all, that's TOTALLY irrelevant to this thread, unless I'm missing something... ;)

Secondly, this thing happened like TWO weeks back - I saw it on another board - I just think it's awful on O&A's part, but then again, they're just jealous of CBSFM's success... ;) (although I do remember one interesting incident on "that day" ;) when one of O&A's people asked both me and my friend some REAL NASTY questions about some of the guys the station had back then - both my friend and i were shocked - we don't DO nasty....) 8)

and thirdly, I can't believe the A-Z weekend is ALMOST OVER!! :( But i gotta tell you - it's been SO GREAT...all i'm thinking now is that the station's celebrating the ONE-YEAR anniversary of its rebirth on July 12 - how are they going to top this past week??

Totally irrelevant to the thread? Isn't this about the whole A to Z weekend? and what it encompasses both directly and indirectly? If you're missing something, you should try reading the title before you post.

...and the second point is no. this incident occurred on July 1st. You can read about it here. http://www.923krock.com/pages/1420414.php#tues

What IS irrelevant is those two washed up Howard wanna-be's...

The show ran 2x over the weekend. The jocks were all given the weekend off. The songs were played in their entirety. I believe the show was hosted by Robert W. Morgan, but I could be mistaken. The montage (snippets) was played at the conclusion of the second airing on Sunday evening. 99X's PD, Bobby Rich, actually recorded teaser breaks to remind listeners that the montage would be coming up at the end of the program, so they could "get their tape recorders ready". I remember him referring to it as "an historic radio event!"

Something else to keep in mind is that 99X was a CHR station and was playing a weekend's worth of music that wasn't in their format. Pretty bold programming move then, unheard of today. That's why CBS-FM's A-Z is so special and no doubt will become an annual event. Kudos to Brian Thomas, Lenny Bloch and Jeff Mazzei!

I also noticed WCBS left out a 10 weeks song from 10.15.77 to 12.24.77 and the #1 of the ENTIRE 70s,Debbie Boone's You Light Up My Life Peace Dr Johnny P LoveTrain 8)

And that was the A-Z weekend. It ends with Zorba the Greek from Herb Albert. Format now back to normal I think with everyday the same song twice in random order.... :(

Oh, no. That song's too old... too LITE. We need something... Fresh.

Sorry... couldn't resist. ;D

But seriously, I was surprised some songs didn't make the A-Z feature, like "In My Life" by the Beatles, "If You Don't Know Me By Now," by Simply Red, "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley, and "Two Hearts" by Phil Collins. I know that three of the four songs (excluding the Simply Red title) have gotten airplay on the station before, but are not on the regular playlist. I'm surprised they didn't get a spin. Oh, well. With all things considered, this very well may have been the most exciting and interesting WEEK of radio I have ever listened to.

"You Light Up My Life" should have been played. If they can play "Honey", why not Debbie Boone?
10 weeks at #1 in 1977 is very significant.

Overall, a very thorough and impressive countdown! :)

I've never experienced anything like this on radio. I can't find adequate superlatives! Go ahead and help me fill in the blank: _______________!!!!

And it was a genuine pleasure to share the A-Z Countdown with you guys! :)

Thanks so much WCBS-FM for this thrilling gift! And I'm going to hold you to your promise that was conveyed by Bill Lee, that we're doing the whole thing again in the future! YAY!

But working uder the same roof as CBS and giving back internal info on the weekend a to z? Isn't this board about giving internal business that you can't hear on the frequencys while giving their opinion?

Even though I feel as if I shouldn't HAVE to restate ANYTHING, this is what it is in a NUTSHELL:

I have been a fan and supporter and student of the station SINCE 1984; I am also a writer with DEFINITE opinions about EVERYTHING...and one of the things that I'm DEFINITELY opinionated about is the sheer fact that O&A have been SO AGAINST CBSFM for a LONG, LONG time - I shudder EVERY time I hear about another one of their "eggings" on against CBSFM - i just think that they're disgusting and rude and that we shouldn't even be mentioning O&A in connection with ANYTHING CBSFM related....

Having said all that, I SO MUCH enjoyed the A-Z Countdown - my goodness, all those songs that HAD NOT been played in MANY years - LOVED IT!! I swear the DJs were having as much fun playing these songs as we the listeners had hearing them - BIG UPS to Brian Thomas and the ENTIRE programming stuff - they hit the mark with this one!! 8) 8) 8) 8)

I lived in Boston when Opie and Anthony were on the air in town, and their biggest achievement was encouraging women to bare their breasts in traffic. Classy act. Most of their listeners were rubes in the sticks.

So if they are criticizing WCBS, really, who cares? It's shtick, and rather unoriginal shtick at that.
