CBS News Radio "Dissolved"

Despite the advance notice that CBS gave in March about the end of the radio network, most affiliates have not announced what will replace CBS Top of the Hour newscasts on May 23. Audacy, the biggest owner of CBS News Radio affiliates, has not said what happens after Friday night. As you can see below, nearly all Audacy news and talk stations except WINS would at least run CBS network news overnight, even if they didn't run the network on weekdays during the day.

Here are the Audacy affiliates that carry CBS newscasts...

KNX Los Angeles ... All-News
WBBM Chicago ... All-News
KRLD Dallas ... All-News AM and PM weekdays ... Talk other hours
KCBS San Francisco ... All-News
KYW Philadelphia ... All-News (used network newscasts overnight)
WPHT Philadelphia ... Talk (used network newscasts nights and weekends)
WWJ Detroit ... All-News
WCCO Minneapolis ... Talk (used network newscasts nights and weekends)
KMOX St. Louis ... Talk (used network newscasts nights and weekends)
KNXT Las Vegas ... Talk
KDKA Pittsburgh ... Talk (used network newscasts nights and weekends)
WTIC Hartford ... Talk (used network newscasts nights and weekends)

And there are a few Talk stations that Entercom already owned before it acquired the former CBS stations. Those stations never ran CBS News even after the merger: KMBZ Kansas City, WBEN Buffalo, WRVA Richmond and WILK Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Even after the company became Audacy, those stations remained ABC affiliates. WYRD-FM in Greenville is a Fox affiliate.

Some big affiliates not owned by Audacy have also not said what happens after Friday night, such as WBZ Boston, KIRO-FM Seattle, KSL Salt Lake City, KXL-FM Portland OR, WGAN Portland ME, WPTF Raleigh and the POTUS channel on Sirius XM. WTOP Washington and Bloomberg Radio switched to ABC earlier this month.

One last note... KAOI is a CBS affiliate in Kihei, Hawaii. It's losing CBS in the middle of Friday PM drive time!

I forgot to add Audacy's WWL New Orleans, which carries CBS newscasts nights and weekends. I'm not sure if the network is heard during the day on weekdays or the station's news staff reads both local and national stories. But that's another Audacy station with no word on what it will do for news Friday at midnight, when it would normally run CBS News.

Now I'm starting to think it will be iHeart's 24/7 white label service. Since the newscast doesn't announce what network it is, maybe Audacy doesn't feel the need to make an announcement either. The white label newscast will just go on beginning at midnight on Friday on all those Audacy stations that had been running CBS News.

Pretty sure I heard the unbranded iHeartService on KXL Portland a few weeks ago when I drove through.

Why would they air spots for a competitor when it's something they can do internally?
I always hate crystal balling this stuff, but a couple of KNX's weekend part-timers were off last weekend and their shifts were covered by weekday full-timers. My mind quickly went to - "are those guys off because they're prepping all week for an Audacy produced TOH newscast service?"

WCCO Minneapolis ... Talk (used network newscasts nights and weekends)
WCCO also airs the CBS TOH newscast during the daytime on weekdays, so this is a full-time affiliate. However, this station will air a Twins game on Friday, so it may or may not air the final newscast.

I'm thinking with Memorial Day weekend coming up, many CBS affiliates will do the switch to a new source tomorrow or before the end of the business day on Friday. To ensure a smooth flip to whatever before the building empties out until Tuesday.

Was there a reason the start of Mem'l Day weekend was chosen for the shutdown? Symbolism? Logistics? Was the date randomly chosen?

The game is in Boston, game time 7:10p ET/6:10p CT. Depending on game length, 'CCO might air the BOH at 10:30 CT...

KSL has been an ABC affiliate for as long as I’ve lived in SLC (since 2019). They don’t usually play top and bottom of the hour newscasts live during drive time.

For parts of the country where your local affiliate stop airing CBS News Radio due to a new affiliate switch this week, this tune in link up to May 22nd will be the only place to hear CBS Radio News for the last time.

Here is another tribute aircheck released on CBS News Radio as it shuts down.

Back in the day, at least in evenings, they used "CBS for Western America" leading into CBS hourly news.
