CBS owned CW affiliates to drop CW affiliation and go independent

No Nexstar station in Orlando any way.

Whoops! My error. I shouldn't have said it that way even knowing that Nexstar doesn't own anything in Orlando. But I think I mentioned it as an example because of Hearst's well-developed relationship with The CW over the years that there wouldn't been no way The CW would've moved to KTXL 40.2 knowing that KQCA would've taken it for sure.

Sinclair is up next to renew The CW as it expires at the end of Aug. No deal means WXSP becomes the new home for The CW in West Michigan I feel that Sinclair will renew The CW in my opinion. WADL is going to be the new home of The CW in Detroit and Mission will be approved as the new owner as The FCC will approve the deal.

More importantly, that could also mean WPNT in Pittsburgh would get The CW if they were to renew, which I'm pretty sure Sinclair will continue having CW stations.

That one I see happening in Pittsburgh. It would also be a return of sorts for the station, when it was a UPN affiliate during its days as WPTT until they took the WB affiliation from the former WNPA.

Hearst is a great partner in The CW. For god sake, they own one of the strongest CW affiliates in the nation in WKCF Clermont. There's no need for Nexstar to move it to a subchannel on one of their own outlets when Hearst has maintained a very well-developed relationship with The CW over the years.

I for one am not totally surprised that The CW will soon be on KQCA. Ever since the CBS/CW announcement came out, I just knew KQCA was the frontrunner and The CW's station to lose in Sacramento in this shuffle.

Now that the obvious is out of the way, its time to figure out who'll get it in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and Seattle. My thoughts...
  • Hearst is in Pittsburgh but doesn't have a second station to fall back on like some of the other duos out there that Hearst owns and manages. This may be WPNT's spot to lose at this point.
  • Atlanta's a lot tougher since there's no Hearst there. I'm not so sure if Gray is interested in getting The CW for WPCH or if TEGNA is willing to add another CW to its portfolio and get it for WATL. This one is a toss-up for me, but I think I'll lean into TEGNA's WATL over Gray's WPCH, mainly because the latter is so much invested into producing its local programs and its local news that it would be so hard to give that up. All WATL airs is local news from WXIA, but no local non-news programs. I look at it that way but its why I think WATL gets it instead of WPCH.
  • Seattle is the trickiest one of all. Will TEGNA pick up yet ANOTHER one for KONG? Or will there be a shot-in-the-dark wildcard option that we just haven't heard from yet a.k.a. KIRO or even KFFV surprising us all?
Whatever these market positions are in, they got one month left from today to figure it out before The CW switches hands in these and other markets.
Maybe Hearst can buy Cornerstone TV Channel 40

Here is a statement from Perry Sook about the CW.

“Linear is not going anywhere,” Nexstar Media Group Chairman-CEO Perry Sook declared Tuesday, after noting that some big media companies are reevaluating their linear TV holdings. His company is growing its linear business. Sook said Nexstar had a productive upfront, led by NewsNation, and noted recent sports deals announced for The CW as the No. 5 English-language broadcast network heads into the new fall season with few program delays due to the writers and actors strikes.

“If you think about it over time, The CW is increasingly looking like Fox, with the same number of hours of weekday programming and its growing live sports portfolio. And with Mike Biard now onboard, we have the team to get us where we want to go,” Sook said.

As recently announced, Biard, a veteran Fox executive, joins Nexstar later this month as president and COO. Tom Carter praised his successor as he prepares for retirement at the end of the year, and analyst after analyst congratulated Carter on his track record at Nexstar.

I think that statement is going to age about as well as George Bush's "No New Taxes!" pledge in the 80s.
Ask Perry that question after the CW is faced with black holes for affiliates in Pittsburgh, Atlanta and Seattle on September 1 because no station wanted to cede their local hours to a network in rebuild mode and Nexstar owns no stations in those markets.

He makes it seem like the CW bought rights to the NFL. "Loud Golf" does not make a ratings booster like what the Big 4 are drawing in other sports.

Just because the network is putting in more hours that is making way of a format similar to Fox doesn't mean its gonna be a huge success. Some success maybe. Look at Ion, they're on 24/7 and don't get high enough ratings.

Also Detroit given that a Nexstar related company Mission Broadcasting still has a pending deal waiting for approval like WADL-TV. Note some have opposed the deal in Detroit.

This means WADL may not necessarily become a CW affiliate in the area soon.

Nexstar easily could sign a quick contract with WADL to carry the CW regardless of the sale to Mission.

The problem is bigger than the CW.

Consider: From April through June, Nexstar's advertising revenue was down 17% from 2022, Sinclair was down 15% and Fox Corp was down 5%. Some of that decline is explained by the lack of an election this year, so it isn't as bad as it sounds.

Meanwhile, YouTube advertising revenue was up 5%, to $7.7 billion. So there is lots of video advertising dollars being spent.

Vox.com: "The advertising market is very soft right now, but even when it comes back, trendlines will still be in favor of Google and Meta and against anyone who doesn’t have that mega-scale."

It's not limited to tv, Vice in bankruptcy while Buzzfeed shuts it's news division whereas newspapers continue to die faster than smaller cable channels or even FAST streaming channels.

My Predictions

Seattle: KFFV or KONG
Atlanta: WPCH DT-4 or WATL
Pittsburgh: WPTT or Subchannels of either WTAE/WPXI/WPGH

In Case WADL didn't Get the CW : WMYD

11 days left until the great switch and seattle atlanta and pittsburgh still haven't got a replacement but will either be KONG or of a Subchannel KFFV, a Subchannel of WPCH or WATL and Either WPTT or a Subchannel of WPGH and if WADL Fails it will go on a subchannel of WXYZ, WDIV or WMYD

Looks like WPNT will be Pittsburgh's new CW affiliate. While there's no official announcement yet, TV listings show new episodes of CW series like Family Law (pictured here) airing on WPNT starting Sept. 1.
