Changes at 92.1 and 94.3

Good Morning Columbia full of.....information. The show needs to be put to rest, really it does.

Based on Mediabase, "What Might have Been" by Little Texas was the last song on Carolina 92.1, played at 4:55. The first song on 92.1 the Palm was "Friday I'm in Love" by the Cure.

RIP Carolina 92.1. You were a good idea gone wrong.

Hey, Ho by the Lumineers was the first song, followed by Friday I'm In Love.

Sorry about that. I could not listen: the stream was down. I was actually following Mediabase. How did the flip go down. Were there any announcments between the songs? Did "What Might Have Been" get cut out?

No, right after "What Might Have Been" faded out, an announcer came on talking about rock musicians influences and right to the id at 92.1 the palm. that's when the Lumineers song came on.

Shame there are no palm trees in South Carolina.

THIS. How do you alienate yourself immediately from your listeners by mixing up palm trees and palmetto trees? South Carolinians are very particular about the difference.

Palmettos ARE palms. Sabal to be exact.

I can't believe this is being debated....

Here was the last hour of radio from Carolina 92.1. :'(

4:55 PM LITTLE TEXAS What Might Have Been
4:52 PM CHUCK MANGIONE Feels So Good
4:49 PM LIONEL RICHIE Stuck On You
4:37 PM KOOL & THE GANG Cherish
4:35 PM JIM CROCE I'll Have To Say I Love You...
4:29 PM FOUR TOPS Baby I Need Your Loving
4:25 PM GLORIA ESTEFAN/MSM Here We Are
4:22 PM BREAD Sweet Surrender
4:13 PM AMY GRANT That's What Love Is For
4:10 PM NEIL DIAMOND Forever In Blue Jeans
4:06 PM ALAN PARSONS PROJECT Time
4:02 PM PAUL MCCARTNEY Another Day

But, I will try the Palm. Seems to be a good, eclectic station.

The debate is not whether Palmettos are Palms, nor whether Palms are Palmettos. The debate is whether it is a stupid name for a radio station. I vote "yes it is". There is no meaning to the word Palm in Columbia, other than the former President of USC was Dr. Palms. That being said, I have enjoyed listening to it for the most part. I am older than the demo, but I think it is a very good mix and good presentation. But I really wonder if it can make money. I wish them the best.

so, are they shooting for something in between 98.5 (more male) and 1067 (more currents)?
I know one hour doesn't tell the whole story - but what? older female audience?

Hi Bugz,

As one that is fed up with the continuous homogenization of radio over the years, I would disagree. I would rather have a station adopt it's own unique identity that ties into the area it broadcast to, rather than to adopt an overused moniker like "The River" or "The Point". Besides, "The Palm" is much easier to remember and does help make the station stand out, which is important when it comes time to fill out Arbitron diaries.

From listening over the last few hours online from Asheville, NC, I've noticed that "The Palm" is more of a "true" Triple A, playing a broad mix of currents/recurrents and gold titles spanning the last 40 years or so of Progressive Rock, targeting an older demo. WXRY has always leaned toward a younger demo in the Triple A world, playing Alternative/Modern Rock hits from the 80s-onward, while avoiding the harder songs of the last 10-12 years that you would hear on a tradition Modern Rock outlet. Sort of like the Modern AC format when it started in 1996-1997.

Just my $0.02...

Gordon, I think they are seeking a balance between older males/females. I would say that Fox 102 is in their target as well along with people that had dropped out of listening to traditional Columbia radio altogether (like myself).

IMHO, The Palm's music mix is so much better than what I'm subject to here in Asheville with "98.1 The River". At least I somewhat have a choice with WNCW in the area, but that station leans more toward Americana on their playlist ("ARC Overnight" and "The World Cafe" being the few exceptions). and, to be honest, I can't stand listening to Bluegrass for a long period of time even though it's big up here.

I have no beef with the music. It's very fresh and I have listened off and on all day. I am older than the demo, but I generally like it. But I don't like the name "Palm 92.1". I don't think it will make sense to the listeners and it is not even easy to say. It doesn't flow. I agree that calling it "The River" or something like that is overdone. But there has to be something else better than Palm. After hearing them go from Dave Matthews in to Hendrix this afternoon, I thought it was "Reefer 92.1". :) I would also add I think it is hypocritical for Mark Bryan to be talking about what he doesn't like about other radio stations when homogenized formatic radio made him a multi-millionaire. I wonder how quickly every one else in the market drops their Hootie music?

The music isn't bad. The biggest issue I have with it is the imaging. The old guy singing "Palm 92.1" sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me. In fact I'd rather hear nails on a chalkboard than that.

Mark Bryan won't make much of an impact in my opinion. Mark still has to say, "Mark Bryan of Hootie and the Blowfish" Darius and Soni don't have to do that at all. Now...if it was one of those guys...

"Good Morning, Columbia" moves to this station one week from today. Bill, Charlie, & Doug. I assume they will still be on in the 6 yo 9 a.m. slot.
