Changes Coming To CBS News

On her first day she congratulated WBTV on their 70th anniversary, on an hour-long special that aired after her newscast. Although that's just when her message aired.

Well I see the Norah O'Donnell graphics are indeed new...a bit more edgy, and a definite blue color theme compared to recent years red color theme. Hmm...a change from red to blue and a Presidential election next year...of course I'm not jumping to any conclusions here!

An Update

Norah O’Donnell’s debut as the new “CBS Evening News” anchor drew much media fanfare but not so many viewers.

The former co-host of “CBS This Morning” came in last place among evening shows on Monday despite a much-publicized premiere that included a sit-down with Jeff Bezos, the richest man in the world.

O’Donnell not only trailed “ABC’s World News Tonight” and “NBC Nightly News,” she also failed to best the ratings of her predecessor, Jeff Glor, who hosted “CBS Evening News” for a year and a half.

CBS rolled out the red carpet for O’Donnell when it announced her new role in May — the same day she was set to receive a high-profile media award from her now former “CBS This Morning” co-host Gayle King.

It then heavily promoted her first show, which boasted an interview with Bezos about his space venture Blue Origin to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing. King, too, gave the show a shout-out on Twitter.

I don't think it really matters who the anchor is, people have their viewing habits set. CBS News will always be at the bottom unless the other networks slip.

Pretty hilarious that they think someone would tune in specifically to see an interview with Jeff Bezos about some obscure space venture.

Honestly I don't think a majority of people cared what Moonves or Fager were doing behind closed doors. Sure the Charlie Rose incident was a black eye for the network, but so was Matt Lauer for NBC but that didn't hurt their morning show any. The CBS Evening News was running fine with Glor. There was no major issue that needed to be addressed.

They felt this need to "shake things up," as they said, and I don't have a problem with that. But assuming it will make a difference in the ratings the first week, in the middle of the summer, especially when all of the pieces aren't set yet, is pretty crazy. This was what I would call a "soft launch" with Nora. They should do a bigger one in the fall when they move to the new studio (which I don't believe will be ready until early next year). But in any case, the booking of pre-packaged guests won't affect the ratings one bit. If they have some big news happening (and I mean real news, not fake invented news about what someone says), then they might see a blip.

Why rush her on the air mid July then? Start her show in September when the season starts.

True also CBS News was in the process of getting more viewers to their streaming venue CBSN National and CBSN Local Edition some of these changes may still be in progress. Plus the pending Viacom Deal is also at play here.

Because until then, they're operating with fill-ins, and from a scheduling perspective, that's a pain for everyone involved.

My only point is to expect any change in the ratings because of the guest bookings isn't realistic.

On the other hand, when Katie Couric debuted, CBS had solid ratings. For a few days, at least. They launched Couric with a commentary from Rush Limbaugh. Same playbook, different decade, different result.

I didn't see a single mention of this on TV. I might not have known an anchor change happened if not for following this site. Granted, I don't watch a lot of CBS programs, especially not in the summer.

That's why I describe it as a "soft launch." No big fanfare, and as much as Nora is solid, she's not Katie Couric. At least back then.

CBS's biggest problem is structural, in that they have low rated and last place local news products in a majority of the top 20 markets, representing about 45% of nation's population. They don't even have local news in one of the top 20 markets (Detroit) and they are at or near the bottom of the pack in 9 of the top 10 markets. The national CBS News programs would be in better shape if they could squeeze out better local news ratings in these markets to provide stronger lead-ins, since generally people watch national network newscasts on whatever channel they watch local news on.

CBS went for a long ride after Walter retiring....I did enjoy Scott Pelley's slow paced news reading as he was anchoring the news.He take the time to read the stories....I cant handle the speed readers. If I'm not near a TV. Always tuned in on News 880 WCBS simulcast at 6:30 when he was on..Sad to see him go....I did enjoy Brian after Tom left NBC...

I dont think cbs evening news even beats out some of the fox news shows like hannity or the five in ratings. Jeff Glor was annoying and too full of himself isnt he dating that one model who is like twenty two years old or something. He also wasnt a very talented broadcaster. Cbs should have brought back josh elliot to do the evening news i think. Would have probably gotten some people to actually tune in to their sub par national newscasts for a change.

Cbs ratings for norahs first evening newscast were also down from cbs news average by almost a million viewers and they said that they were expecting a large audience for her first show hosting because they had an exclusive interview with jeff bezos about the moon landing anniversary really? You think most people give a damn about that. Cbs news is clueless. Les Moonves at least had half a clue about how to run a network compared to these new talentless executives they brought in.
