Changes coming to Johnstown

I see two call sign changes in the works for Johnstown. 101.7 WCCL will flip to WOWQ and 990/105.9 WNTI will become WGGI. So it looks like 7 Mountains will flip 101.7 to a WOWY simulcast and Make 990/105.9 a country station with the Froggy name.

We reported on the WCCL to WOWY simulcast when the Altoona changes were made last month...

The call changes in the Johnstown area take effect on May 4, so it is likely then that the full cluster shuffle will take place. Based on their other changes, I'd expect Hot 92.1 to move to WNTJ/104.5 as "Pop Radio" which also matches the frequency it is on in Altoona from a branding standpoint. 990/105.9 will likely be simulcasting 95.5 WFGI.

I can see 7 Mountains Media and EMF doing a frequency swap with 105.7 and 92.1. The 105.7 frequency is included in the new WOWY logo as reported by Lance last month. Including this station in the WOWY simulcast would make sense since it perfectly covers the areas 101.7 and 103.9 do not. 92.1 would give EMF better coverage in the Johnstown area and matches up with 97.7 in Somerset, the K-Love affiliate for that area. It is important to note that 97.7 is owned by 7 Mountains Media but is operated by EMF. I can also see 7 Mountains Media donating 97.7 to EMF.

The FM Translator for WNTI in Somerset is on 103.5 not 105.9.

WGGI sure sounds like another Froggy, but I'm not sure what they gain by simulcasting 57,000 watt WFGI located less than 30 miles away in Johnstown?

Moving the CHR format from Class A 92.1 WJHT to an AM/FM translator combo is definitely a downgrade. They're keeping the format but shuffling it off to a lesser signal, just like they did in State College and Altoona. It remains to be seen what they're going to do with 92.1

It is not a huge coverage difference when targeting Johnstown.

Coming from someone who lives near Johnstown and has been listening to 92.1 almost my whole life, the 92.1 signal isn't that great in the area. It is filled with static due to tramsmitting from atop a mountain and broadcasting to an area that essentially is a valley. The class A signal makes it fade out in alot of places that stronger stations which transmit from the same location do not. 104.5 transmitts from a different location and is actually clearer than 92.1 in most places. On a map it looks like a big loss in reality it's not much different.

I worked in NW PA for WDDH/WKBI for 4 years and i can attest to how the hills really play havoc or help, depending on what signal and where... and often maps dont show reality.

When i did afternoons on WDDh, i had listeners .. regular listeners well west/northwest of titusville/Oil City and well north of Salamanca.. something maps would've said wouldnt work but listeners got great signals.

Down in the "hole" of Johnstown, sure I would agree that the 104.5 translator does better... it's on a tower that overlooks the city. But from high atop Laurel Mountain with 95.5 and others, the 92.1 facility covers a greater area, particularly north and south of Johnstown.

That's what I've been saying about this regarding CHR in State College and Altoona.

It's odd they have Pop 93.1 and 95.9 on full FM stations but the others are on translators. Yet Bigfoot country is on every single FM frequency in feels like.

They moved it to 104.5 to be able to simulcast it seems with WFBG, can use the same branding.

"WNTJ is simulcasting with Seven Mountains’ recently launched “Pop Radio 104.5” 1290 WFBG/104.5 W283DI Altoona."

Why is this company obsessed with moving CHRs to AM like it's 1962?! Barely one can hear it! It's 2023. Keep CHR on FM where it BELONGS!
You keep forgetting about translators and their contours to serve small, yet mostly clustered in one spot, populations in a valley in a state that has a heavy mountainous terrain. (Regardless if the format’s on a full-powered stick, the terrain will be a hindrance.)
