Changes Coming to Mornings at Hot 97

Are non-compete clauses still a thing on New York radio? I don't know if any of those departed hosts can just go to another NYC area station right away whether they resigned or were terminated.

Absolutely. But not necessarily if contracts have expired...

Not a lawyer, but I believe under New York’s Broadcast Employees Freedom to Work Act (Labor Law § 202-k), post-employment non-compete clauses are generally banned for radio on-air talent.

Ebro is asserting on social media that his morning show was canceled due to the progressive political views he expressed on his show.
I wonder if he would be a good fit for SiriusXM. They could give him a platform to do an unfiltered show, like Howard Stern.
I'm a leftist and I think this has so little to do why he was fired that it's not even funny. It's not like he was in a country station. He was in a station aimed at blacks and Hispanics in a city that just elected a socialist mayor.

Why was he fired? I don't know. But it is not that.

I didn't have Funk Flex moving to mornings on my bingo card. I always considered him more of an evening/night person. Would his type of show work in AM Drive? I guess we'll find out sooner or later.

My on personal opinion is non-competes should go the way of the Dodo bird. Especially if the station cans you. But with the capability of listening to stations from anywhere online, I wonder if they could enforce a non-compete if he's fired from one station, gets hired at a station clear across the country and then goes on his personal media saying "Hey folks, since the station there did me dirty you can now tune in to me on the ishart/Fraudacy radio app or just the stations own website out here in wonderful California on KRAP!"

Two words. Alternative. Rock.
Funnily enough, The Block has been doing badly as Alt 92.3 was before WINS took over the frequency in '22. I can see it now in the coming months.

ALT 94.7

WHERE WE PLAY NOTHING BUT SABRINA CARPENTER, BILLIE ELLISH, & SOME BLINK 182 FOR THE OLD HEADS... HEAD OVER TO OUR LIVE NATION CALENDAR FOR TICKETS

It's a New Jersey signal running a wannabe NYC format when most radios in the five boroughs hear static or at least multipath hash.

I know you're joking but that's the kind of pop mix that actually works well in the Jersey suburbs while still serving the city, It's obviously not Alt, but PLJ and Jack-FM both did their best in the burbs with that kind of fare. Anyone who was here during that time should remember the endless talk about PLJ, soccer moms, and how it was all about billing, not ratings.

Perhaps Audacy could strengthen their New York cluster by selling WXBK 94.7, and a few stations in other markets, and then buying WEPN 98.7.
They could continue the La Exitosa format that is currently on there, or start another Hispanic format, such as Spanish soft a/c.
Maybe EMF/K-Love would be interested in acquiring 94.7 for their Radio Nueva Vida.
Problem solved :)

I mean personally I wouldn't mind given its frequency location. Alt or Pop or maybe Active Rock would've probably worked better in Jersey to compete with DHA (at least in my opinion, given that it'll never happen.)

A K-Love buyout honestly feels like the cleanest, most realistic hypothetical answer especially when you look at how something like 95.5 WPLJ that has the better frequency for the tri-state a simulcast on 94.7 could fit into the tri-state’s dial as both frequencies have the signal strength on the NYC & NJ side respectively.

That... or well yk... go back to country.

Yes I just brought a used SUV & 94.7 Is the only I mean only station I get clearly in New Jersey. Maybe they’re going to go Automated all the time. Save money on talent
My location in South Jersey, I clearly get WXBK. It's only when I go up into NYC is where it starts to fade.

I think Audacy will give 94.7 The Block one more chance before considering a change, whether it's a format flip or a sale. Besides, what formats are left for them? At this point, they may have to consider a format in Spanish or something bilingual if they were looking to flip 94.7.

If Audacy decides to keep trying with the current format, perhaps they could program mornings with very little or no talk. Maybe commercial-free. That could serve as counter programming to the other urban stations, which don’t play much music in the early AM hours.
