Clear Channel Blows Up The Harbor. Now Evolution 101.7

Congratulations from New York City!!!!!

And to answer on reelyreal, admitted I have never heard the Harbor but there always has been a fan base in the Boston area for dance music. We can go back to the Sunny Jo White days at Kiss 108, Star 93.7.

Let's see what happens.

@mjb1124, crossing my fingers too!

What is going on?

DANCE MUSIC IS GOING ON!!!!!
And I can't be any more prouder for Boston getting such a station! :)

proud here as well! originally from rhode island it is great too see CC doing this!!

It's a stunt can't compete with Jammin & Kiss I say it's going alternative back to FNX or something of that nature or going to become Urban A/C or some type of other format in Spanish though.

Pff, it's NO stunt. Jammin & Kiss are totaly different stations. EDM is different from CHR or whatever, don't forget that.

Sounding good so far.
I hope this is real.

Unknown how this competes with 94.5, 103.3 & 107.9.
I don't think it does.

Just looking at the playlist on their website.
Paul Van Dyke, Tiesto, Kaskade.
Wow.

Re: Harbor gone---- welcome to the new dance evolution 101.7

Heard about via twitter..so after tripling FNX numbers they change. Harbor fans prob upset...so does 96.9 go to alleged variety hits?

It seems to be a strange time to make a format change. I would think any change would be done after Christmas. A station could play seasonal music until 12/26 and then flip.

This is HUGE. Wow. I can't believe it. So proud of CC Boston for taking this risk, and bringing the music people my age listen to to the radio.

I agree that this doesn't really compete with any of those stations. We've all been listening to our iPods in the car, and now there is an actual radio station playing the music. This just helps bring younger listeners onto the dial, and I wish CC the best.

WOW.

They probably wanted to start their new Dance format early, since their were rumors about Greater Media starting a Dance or Hip Hop station on 96.9 WTKK.

Interesting. Gutsy move by CC.

It'll be interesting to see what Greater Media does with 96.9 now. Doing an Adult Hits format (a la The Harbor or Mike FM) would likely be too close to WROR for comfort.

It will also be interesting to see what CC flips 101.7 to in another six months.

I don't think this switch will prevent Greater Media from switching to this format or a similar format, if that's what they want to do. After all, some light bulb have more wattage than 101.7.

This is huge & unprecedented. CC is moving a station (and a format, really) from a digital online platform *to* terrestrial. Like time going backwards -- ironic indeed in that it is the exact opposite "evolution" of wfnx (and many before) to internet platform.
Probably in the offing for some time since Clear Channel started this station on iheart a month ago.
No question it can work well. C89.5 -- run by (very talented) high school staffers & students -- in seattle regularly pulls .7ish, more than kexp, world class in its own right. 101.7 is run by the tastemakers of dance music for the last 2 decades. Tong is longtime host of 2 weekly Radio 1 shows -- that he's hosting a *daily show* on 101.7 let alone only on a digital platform shows that the push is definitely on for EDM.
It will require some local content to work, as with the old WKIE, ENRG, and 93.1 Miami mentioned above. likely in the works..

I can't believe I just heard Cajmere on a commercial Boston radio station!! Maybe the world is ending tomorrow. ;D

Begs the question, was The Harbor a stunt?

It lasted too long to be a stunt. Either it was a placeholder format and CC planned to go EDM on 101.7 all along, or CC wasn't happy with Harbor's first book (which, as has been noted, did triple WFNX's last number) and decided to pull the plug quickly. 101.7 is such a marginal signal with such low public awareness that it's hard to see any format really powering up the ratings for CC on it.

We'll probably find out tomorrow, maybe.
