Coming soon... K-EARTH 101 streaming live in September!

I haven't listened to K-RTH for several years. I would say the last time I sat down and really listened to the station was back in 2001ish before I went to Internet and other means of radio listening. I'm a huge fan of oldies especially the 1954-1969ish format. Anyhow, I sat down and listened to KRTH the last few days to compare the station to the buzz on this forum.

First off I was a major listener of KRTH 101.1 back in the late 1980s and 1990's (along with than KODJ/KCBS-FM when they were oldies). I noticed KRTH 101.1 still has the same jingles more or less. But, the talent is very slow and boring. Pretty much like everyone said on this forum. The DJ's play a song, say a one liner, than flip to a new song. The DJ's are for sure nothing like the golden era of KRTH when they had Reel Don Steel, Robert W. Morgan, Mr. Rock 'n' Roll and Jonie Caroll (I know I spelt her name wrong). KODJ/KCBS had Machine Gun Kelly and Charlie Tuna. I remember KRTH had a show called "Live from the 60's", and they had the Big Kahoona, and other fun means to bring listening pleasure.

Keep in mind these DJ's were part of KRTH back in the 1988-1995 era. I guess it's just the way FM is going with these type of DJs. Little say or no say at all. The music has made a big turn but I know FM oldies stations have gone into the 60s/70s format and away from the 50s/early 60s format. But speaking on for DJ's...KRTH has taken a major dive with their Jocks from what I can tell listening in Feb. 2007.

KRTH on the other hand did always have a tight playlist after around 1994-96ish. I noticed after KCBS ditched oldies and went classic rock, and later on KRLA went silent music wise, that KRTH stuck to a very tight rotation of songs and they stopped playing some songs I was use to hearing. I remember very clearly calling KRTH one time back around 1996 to request the early 1960's song "You Can't Sit Down" by The Dovells which use to be played on KRTH only to have the DJ tell me they know longer play that song nor have it in their playlist. But that's FM, and FM stations do what they can to target listeners and advertisers.

When KRTH starts streaming over HD-2 it should be interesting to hear their HD format since they've stated (Wikipedia/HDRadio) that the format will be Pre-Beatles oldies only. All and all the station needs to do something with their DJ's. The station needs personality life.

K-Earth isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It's just a little...OK, a LOT boring with its repetitive playlist. Adding the 70s has helped jazz things up, but those songs will soon be burned out too. For now, I enjoy hearing a little Earth Wind and Fire, Bread, and Bee Gees from time to time. Their 60s tracks are totally burned out, though.

Even when they had those classic KHJ jocks, K-Earth never really let its jocks say too much. It's always been about the music and the jingles. Since our KOST FM friend signed on, you can really tell the jocks are being fed things to say. Often the fit between the jock's style and what is on the card is really poor, and it sounds awkward. Seems like an overly controlling thing for a PD to do, scripting the jocks' comments.

The few times they let jocks talk, it jumps out at you and slaps you in the face, it's so shocking! For example, when Shotgun Kelly spoke about playing the (cheesey but popular among some) God Song around Christmas. He was actually speaking off-the-cuff, and for probably a minute straight!

A dream oldies station would play 1955 through about 1982, emphasis on 64-75 maybe, would let jocks talk a bit, and would have every third or fourth song be a real surprise "wow, I haven't heard that in a while" song. The "sound" could actually be pretty close to the K-Earth we have now, I think, in terms of the lean toward R&B, disco, Latino-influenced stuff (Santana, Malo, War,) and lots of Beatles and Beach Boys. That's a great sound mix. It would also have a specialty show or too to showcase doo-wop, and an Elvis show at a time when people are awake. The station would reach out to younger listeners and promote themselves to keep the music popular with the next generation. They would of course keep the KHJ jingle tunes! And it of course will never happen, though XM 60s on 6 comes close.

The Golden era of KRTH was, in my opinion, when they were oldies/AC in the early 1980s. You could actually listen during the day and be surprised at what they would play, and weekends were actually special. When Sabo made them go all-oldies (1986?) it killed a great station and replaced it with one that -- due to being on FM -- hurt the better all-oldies station, KRLA.

Yes they got decent ratings for a short while, but at what cost?

Heard an aircheck or two from this period, and in my opinion it sounded a bit sleepy. But obviously it's not fair to judge from just a couple listens. Plus I don't care for AC, so I guess that makes it even more unfair.

One thing Jhani Kaye has improved are the themed weekends. Prior to his coming, they had some really vague themes that I never understood, or themes that were poorly implemented. "It's a summertime fun weekend!" What does that mean? Or the Beatles Top 100 of all time, when some minor hit would be #2, like "Tell Me Why." Kaye has done some countdowns that actually make sense, a reasonable A to Z weekend, a fun Beach Boys/Bee Gees thing, and the very nice no repeat weekend. Almost makes up for him ruining the Christmas music with his sleepy-time KOST tunes and "soft" KOST-y jingles. So crass to suck up to the KOST Christmas monster for a one month bump in ratings, while alienating the core KRTH listeners.

I think Jhani Kaye is moving the jocks to less of the high profile "Oldies" type personality to a more REAL sounding delivery. AC if you will.

Maybe he thinks it will be easier on the ears. I do find it somewhat easier to listen to. Shotgun has a nice TONE to his voice doing this straight (pardon the pun Jhani) delivery. Kind of reminds me of the 80' KOIT SF delivery.

In this day and age of loud Hip Hop, rock, etc, obnoxious sweepers, sex and violence on tv/radio/movies, Perhaps with the DJ's sounding more real and relaxed it might work in laid back la la land.

I'm just glad to see a PD smart enough to realize ex high profile yelling oldie personalities like Shotgun can also put on a nice adult relaxed but fresh delivery. Not too many PD's with that kind of smarts anymore.

At least Kaye has freshened the station, and undone some of the damage which Mike Phillips did during his gruesome tenure as PD.

Whoever hired Sean 'Hollywood' Hamilton was insane; I'm glad he's gone!!!!!

Jhani Kaye is doing his own damage to the station - liner cards for talented personality jocks, almost no processing and adding oldies that 1/2 dozen Los Angeles radio stations now share (Movin, Hot, V100, KBIG, K-Earth and KJLH).

There was another comment earlier from someone who said K-Earth was AC/Oldies in the early 80's. How do you call a station that had London & Engleman (until May 1981), played Turning Japanese, Hit Me With Your Best Shot and Our Lips Are Sealed and was the Santa Monica Pier July 4th Fireworks Music Extravaganza station, AC? It wasn't really AC/Oldies and it did have a direct competitor (KIIS after dumping mostly playing disco was a sort-of Rock AC/Oldies station with personality - Dees in the morning and Don Geranamo in '81/'82 and played Pat Benatar, The Go Go's along with Chicago and the Beatles...and a few rhythmic tunes). But I do agree that was K-Earth's best sounding years.

Phillips was actually one of the better PD's to helm KRTH. The "whoever" who hired Hamilton may have been the GM. I'm not so sure it was
then PD Jay Coffey. But Coffey did not help K-Earth much. The playlist just seemed to get tighter under his direction. His strength was as a jock and not much else.

It's said that Kaye remarked in the beginnings of KOST that he'd get the station right even if he had to script out the whole format for the deejays. Sad too because the original staff came from personality backgrounds. From what I've heard most had Top 40 personality experience at stations that were at the least well known if not highly rated winners. But he's a control freak, like many PD's are. Anyone who took a tour of KOST in the 80's could tell you about the "cue cards" taped to the glass above the console. It' said that he was an unrelenting nitpicker, and I'll bet he hasn't change. Not that it's always a bad thing if your staff has no talent, but it's detrimental when they are talented. What's more perplexing is that damned 1-4pm shift. Why doesn't that get better?

Jack Silver got Hollywood Hamilton the gig.

That 1-4 PM shift was PERFECT when local legend Johnny Hayes was mikeside, but the beancounters at Infinity tossed him, just like those at Clear Channel have been doing in market after market, and especially in their addictions to cost-cutting, voicetracking, and putting the demands of Wall Street ahead of the needs of the listeners.

I don't blame Brian Beirne (Mr. Rock & Roll) for leaving either; when they got rid of his 'Nooner', I got REALLY disgusted!!!!

I agree about Coffey; great air personality, but his decision to continue's Phillip's habit of running KRTH like a top 40 station, as he confessed in a R&R column a few years ago, made the station less listenable.

Thank goodness that Gary Bryan is back doing mornings.

At least the PD at Clear Channel's KOST "gets it". Stella Schwartz brought back 2 of the original
KOST jocks in recent years. Both as I recall were "rightsized" as Darth Laughlin put it...

I see now where one of KRTH's best jocks John St. John (forgive my spelling) is quitting. Too bad, he sounded like a full-timer...

Brian Beirne was pushed out. He didn't retire on his own.

Marv-L.A. said:
Why would CBS 'push out' THE voice of KRTH 101???

Maybe someone in porogramming felt it connected the station too much with the past and the 55+ demos they are trying to shed.

The beancounters have done it again!!!!!

Or maybe it was a legitimate programming choice and decision.

They've just signed 'Shotgun' Tom Kelly to a three-year contract extension through 2011, but having Mr. Rock & Roll & Johnny Hayes would also be superb!!!!!!

As far as Brian Beirne is concerned he was put out to pasture in the time honored RKO way. First he was moved from middays to 7-10pm and then after a short period to 10p-12midnight. At that point he wasn't even live. It was obvious that he was voice-tracked. Then it was just a matter of time.

Yes, it's great that Tome Kelly has been re-upped, but I doubt Johnny Hayes will ever be invited back. I'm sure they feel he's too old now. Plus, if good sound was all they cared about they would have done anything they could to keep Jon St. John from leaving recently. The guy was one of the best hires that KRTH had in years. He was relegated to weekends during his short tenure, but sounded like he belonged in a full-time position. Again, if good sound was paramount, what's his name in the 1-4pm shift wouldn't be there. St. John would've been perfect in that slot. For that matter, Dave Randell wouldn't have been passed over either. It's truly un-explainable...

Is it me but i hardly ever hear Phone calls on air just image liners being read. Those liners apparently are expected to be read over an intro. Too many times i'm hearing the jocks read a 20 second liner over 8 seconds. It sounds bad!

Depends on the jock and of course how strict Kaye is about which liners should be read at which times during the hour.
Most of the more experienced jocks there try to match the liner to the intro that has enough time.
There are some who try to squeeze in liners that are too long for the intro and yeah, it sounds bad.

By the way, they have been using phone calls, but sometimes less than usual...
