HOW IRONIC!
I was just thinking about this.... LAST NIGHT! But I didn't want to mention it because I was too lazy to research its actual chart position before posting. I figured "either the stations I'm listening to are really cool to play extra things like "Super Bass", or it must really be a hit". I wasn't sure which part was true, but.... I'll take your word for it that it must really be a big song because.... to be quite honest, I'm not really crazy enough about it to research how well it's doing.
However:
Some of you know I'm a big booty bass fan (thanks to the dirty south), and if this is what it takes to keep any form of booty bass, electro-bass, or bass music period... alive, then I'm a supporter of the song. The "bass community" group on facebook despises the song though. I think it's ok, but not the best example of modernized bass music.
ANYWAY, I guess the good thing about Cumulus taking over more chr stations and converting them into less hit music is that since a bunch of stations will sound / "look" more alike playlist wise, then the places with Cumulus chr's right now will no longer look "odd and different" and it will become part of the norm. If everybody starts excluding hits, then people can no longer complain since everyone else is doing the same thing and that is now the new norm, while the other cutting edge stations are the "new, odd minority".
Not sure how I'd feel about everyone adopting a Cumulus top 20 currents playlist instead of a complete top 40, though. I already think 40 is too limited... but If this takes off and the full top 40 playlist style becomes old fashioned, then a lot of record labels will have to depend primarily on mix shows or internet radio play to get their songs heard. I guess Satellite Radio would be another avenue - as long as they don't also eventually adopt the top 20 style as well...
Or maybe I'm thinking too deep into this. You never know, though. It COULD be the new trend...
