CUMULUS keeps ignoring "Super Bass" !

Huntsville, Alabama is such a conservative place though - to give Cumulus credit, most of their CHRs are in very conservative markets - IMO there is absolutely no way a Cumulus CHR (the way it's currently programmed) would do well in California, the Pacific Northwest, the Great Lakes Area of the Midwest, or New England

Which makes you wonder what 92 Pro in Providence will sound like once it becomes a Cumulus station.
How about nearby Fun 107 New Bedford? Q-105 New London? All 3 of these CHRs are in New England

What about 93 Q Syracuse? 97.5 Now in Lansing? Both part of the Great Lakes culture.

How about 97 BHT Wilkes Barre?
Wild 102.9 Reno? 95.1 KHOP in Modesto-Stockton?
98.9 Magic FM Colorado Springs? 93-3 KOB Albuquerque?

^Some of those are rhythmic-leaning, and some are Alternative-leaning - I really hope Cumulus doesn't touch them! I feel like Citadel had by far the most creative CHRs...

WIOG in Bay City Michigan is good too. It will be interesting to see what will happen when Cumulus takes over since they own WWCK in Flint.

^Man, I feel like almost every Alternative-leaning CHR in the country was owned by Citadel - I REALLY hope Cumulus doesn't mess with those!!

(WIOG/Saginaw, WJIM/Lansing, WPRO/Providence, KHOP/Modesto, KLAL/Little Rock...)

I wish Citadel had bought out Cumulus, so we could have an Alternative-leaning CHR in ATL instead of a boring one

Cumulus does fine with other formats. They're doing pretty good with KRBE in Houston.

Well I guess it's just Atl. But still, if what I mentioned above does become the new trend, at least it will make Atl chr look normal in comparison to other markets.

I haven't said anything, but I'm very shocked at the move WWVA 105.7/96.7 has made to start adding in "extra" songs in addition to being sort of edgy! It's surprising not only for Atlanta, but even for ClearChannel! However, their weekend mixshows are still too mediocre. If WWVA keeps things up with how they are programming their music, they could become almost as good as WPOW. WPOW may not kill in ratings, but they sure do sound better than a majority of the American rhythmics, and I'm sure people visiting from overseas are happy with it.

It's true that many chr's do exclude hits, as mentioned earlier. But they don't exclude nearly as much as what has been missing from Atl airwaves for quite a few decades now (and keep in mind that WWVA can only be heard in certain areas). Without WWVA, there would be a lot more things missing from ATL chr than there are things missing from this small town Tucson, Az. that I'm currently in. I don't even think Tucson is big enough to deserve it's own market section here on these boards! I could post there, but I doubt many people would see it, and my post would probably be visible on the first board topics page into part of 2012! That's how slow it is... yet ClearChannel is programming KRQ as if Tucson is almost a major market! So yes, with that being said, I will give ClearCannel credit for the way they operate their chr's. The ATL. Cumulus playlist style chr would be perfect for Tucson, Az. It probably would not succeed in Phoenix though with the way things are currently there.

It doesn't surprise me that CC runs KRQ the way it does. For the size of the market, the station has a legacy. It was once one of the highest-rated Top-40 stations in the country. Clarke Ingram used to program the station. Previous morning shows and personalities include: Mojo (now at Channel 95.5 Detroit, but also syndicated and on sister KOHT in Tucson), Mike Elliot and Jimmy Kimmel, Tim & Willy, R Dub (Slowjams), Johnjay & Rich (before they went to syndication and KZZP), Carson Daly was an intern, Gary Coleman was an intern (not too noteable), etc...and the station is consistently at or near the top of the ratings.

It pains me to think what's going to happen to WSSX in Charleston, also. I'm sure it's gonna get that awful CHR playlist Cumulus uses. I think if Citadel had bought Cumulus, the industry would have improved. Their stations are more alive and interesting, not so automated and boring...

I'm actually completely shocked that "Super Bass" is a hit...anywhere. I'm a huge Nicki Minaj fan, but I always thought this was one of the weakest tracks off of "Pink Friday". I guess I was wrong, as its her first top 5 solo hit on the Pop charts.

I wasn't until I saw her open for Lil Wayne at Staples Center and Honda Center in April that I could even tolerate the song. I also saw her open for Britney Spears at Honda Center and she ended her set with "Super Bass" and had the crowd singing along--so I guess its a hit.

That would be a really big risk IMO, cause there's a Rhythmic station there that's been giving SSX an awful time for the past couple years

I just dont care for her music at all period.

It could be that "Super Bass" does not test well with adults....which cumulus stations tend to be adult leaning CHR's. Radio Now in Milwaukee has it on thier playlist but I don't think they have spun it more then 10 times in a week. Radio Now is a straight up mainstream CHR. From what I have seen Adults who want CHR listen to Radio Now while their kids listen to Kiss

Super Bass is the least likely hit I thought Nicki Minaj would have. But then it all makes sense to follow the time tested formula of rapper comes new to the scene with edgy "street creds" then releases a syrupy teen aimed pop song.

I wish Citadel bought out Cumulus too.

WFBC in Greenville/Spartanburg is friendly towards some adult songs (Keep Your Head Up, for one) and has Super Bass in heavy rotation.

That's cause there's no Hot AC or competing CHR though - they don't have to worry as much about people changing the station

BTW yeah it's pretty crazy how Cumulus added "Lighters" by Bad Meets Evil this week (which is rap), but they still haven't touched Super Bass - I remember them refusing to play Shake It by Metro Station a few years ago, even when it went Top 5, but I thought that was because they didn't like all the sexual references

Bad Meets Evil is an Eminem side project...And Eminem has shown to test well with adults recently...To use my Radio Now example in Milwaukee...I would not be surprised to see Bad Meets Evil on thier playlist...they are not adverse to playing rap...in fact they are open to it...as long as it won't alienate thier adult listeners. They play LMFAO and have had Lupe Fiasco in powers for awhile now.

The closest threat they have is WHZT. I've thought for a while that they should segue from Rhy CHR to mainstream CHR - I'd love for this market to have another true format war!

WFBC does do a good job with balance, I just wish they weren't so recurrent heavy at times. Oh well, what they are doing works for them.

I remember conversations from 10, 15, 20 years ago, when the influence of hip hop was growing and people would suggest that teens back then, who are now squarely in the 25 to 54 listening group, would eventually tire of hip hop and move towards more rock music. Its funny to see a statement like "Eminem tests well with adults" now. Actually, its not funny, it makes me feel old.
