CUMULUS keeps ignoring "Super Bass" !

editthis said:
One of my PD's back in the day mid-2000's totally ignored CHR hits he personally didn't like. We weren't allowed to play Unwritten or Scars or Sexy Back because they "weren't real hits" and didn't believe stations were playing them as much as they said they were. It was only until a consultant came to town and they went out to a club that was playing Sexy Back and the reaction of the crowd proved we could play Sexy Back...at night...

So glad I'm no longer the only person trying to point out that some PD's do this...

And on the totally opposite end of the spectrum if there was a current song he liked (and it was rare, we played golds like Motowphilly and 95 south's Whoop There it is 10-15x a week because that music was "better" than current music) he would go crazy all over it. Case and point when Nelly Furtado's PROMISCUOUS was released it went as an add right into Power rotation (then again power rotatation was only 30-35x because current music was so bad) and we played it in "power" the entire time it was a current.

I remember alot of conservative top 40 stations would wait till the song got real big before they would play it. Here in Columbus they used to be real good at that.

I really hate to bring this old thread back up, but I didn't think it was worth another Cumulus CHR thread - looking at recent ratings in the larger markets, KRBE in Houston and KCHZ in Kansas City aren't doing great right now - both are using the one-size-fits-all Cumulus CHR playlist. In August, KRBE was 8th and has really dropped...KCHZ was 9th and losing pretty badly to KMXV.

Seems to me like these stations would do better with customized playlists. KCHZ was top 5 6+ PPM earlier this year. Not sure about the others. WNFN/Nashville (which is a little more rhythmic) continues to struggle, as does KLIF. Q100 continues to do well, so I guess as long as it works there, it's gonna work everywhere else ::) KRBE is in a market where Hot AC isn't particularly strong, and KCHZ is in a market where there is already an adult friendly CHR that does well and a hot AC that does just alright, so there may be room for a rhythmic lean, as the station has had in the past.

Like I've said over and over, I'm not against rock on CHR's, balanced CHR's, or anything, but this concept just doesn't seem logical to me.

For me, this is really upsetting news (kind of lol...)

Now that Cumulus is officially programming WPRO/Providence, KLAL/Little Rock, WBHT/Wilkes-Barre, WJIM/Lansing, etc., the centralized adds have begun - this week, Wish You Were Here by Avril Lavigne and Marry The Night by Lady GaGa (the same two songs that all the traditional Cumulus stations added this week)

There is some variation on the adds (i. e. additional songs on various stations), but it looks like Jan Jeffries wants all the former Citadel stations under the same core Cumulus centralized adds program - my guess is he's making the transition gradual at most of these newly acquired stations

The result - Jan Jeffries is going to completely control the CHR add board...kind of crazy

As much as I want rock on the charts. It's not right to do this. I hate this corporate america garbage. each station much be catered to a specific market and have local people on it. i really hate hearing ryan seacrest on 3 stations when I'm at school. Good thing when I go back home I only hear him on one station. It's stupid to be honest. Other syndicated shows like DML and Elvis (although I like Elvis but better when he was at home on the Z back home) suck. it's cutting jobs because of the economy. and no one can seem to fix that republicans democrats independents. someone please fix that so we can get local radio back/america back/don't occupy fix it

I wonder if Mediabase will just count Cumulus as one group of stations rather than each station individually since the playlists are standardized throughout the company, similar to CC's PC stations.

There are some variations on the adds (and in the playlists) - but it seems like there are core bunch of songs Jan Jeffries is requiring each station to add each week, now including the stations acquired from Citadel

An adult sound will be a disaster in Providence. It's not working in Houston - KRBE's numbers are really off and KCHZ in Kansas City, who once tied with or was ahead of KMXV, has fallen way behind.

WPRO is actually already adult-leaning (and doing really well in Providence) - the difference is, though, that the playlist is progressive and new-music based, as opposed to the typical Cumulus station which is conservative/recurrent-heavy

Pro-FM has also been big on Alternative/Pop-Alternative tracks, whereas Cumulus is more focused on traditional Hot AC music

KCHZ ratings have been the same for years. Since its sign on in 1998 switching back and forth between Mainstream CHR and Rhythmic. The previous owners Syncom ran it cheap and real picky over hiring jocks. Musically they always sounded better than KMXV. One thing I give Cumulus credit on they actually spend money on the station when they bought it in 2004. KMXV covers Kansas City better vs. KCHZ which you can hear clear in Topeka KS. As far as Hot AC goes The Point is doing good because there is no AC station left in Kansas City anymore after KUDL and Star flipped. KLZR in Lawernce KS and KKJO in St. Joseph serve as Kansas City Hot AC's but rimshot signals for years.

KCHZ did have a nice ratings jump when they morphed back into a Mainstream CHR. They jumped ahead of Mix for a few months, and they were even #1 in the KC market one month (don't remember which.) They've since leveled off, and KMXV has surged back ahead, but KCHZ did it with a more mainstream CHR approach than KMXV.

The Point DOES do well, since Entercom blew up their AC and Gen X station to fill both holes with one station. The ratings are acceptable, but nothing exceptional.

Yeah KCHZ had a nice jump mainly because KCHZ plays more music and its halfway automated. While KMXV still plays the same songs every 2 hours and the jocks talk too much. Somewhat KMXV was going through a identity crisis leaning away from its longtime Adult CHR lean and playing more Rhythmic hits which they normally play at night. Still I wish the Vibe would go back to Rhythmic. They use to play some good reccurent golds during that phase.
