curtis in Raleigh

Well, Miller isn't coming back here anytime soon, thank goodness. I don't think the bosses are stupid enough to hire him again. As for the morning show, its Rick and Donna Martinez for now, though I think the search for a permanent host is still going on.

well, Rick and Donna need some help. They have good guests and good topics, but they stumble over each other too much. Then again, if everyone at Curtis talks about them behind their backs the way everyone seemed to talk about Kevin behind his back, Rick and Donna are probably scared that the show is going to be taken away from them any minute now. If someone can help them calm their nerves, since that seems to be the problem, I think they should be given a chance. Don't know of anyone else who could bring name recognition to that show.

Rick and Donna Martinez, a husband-and-wife team. Rick Martinez used to work for the News & Observer in some capacity. I'm sure there are other details, but I can't remember them.

seems that Zachary guy is spinning more folks out. the morning show on 96rock is now going to sports talk.what a bonehead move. what's that guy drinking or smoking or both.i think this is 4th morning show in 5 years.didn't he go to DC and fail before he came back to curtis? i think don curtis will regret this after a while. let's see, 4th morning show on the rock station, 3rd morning show on ptf in about 5 years, 2 afternoon hosts in the afternoons, revolving chairs on the country morning show and the illegals doing mornings on la ley. is anyone paying attention over there?

You can say what you want about "that Zachary guy." I'm sure he'd be more than happy to compare his paycheck to yours. Anyway, "that Zachary guy" has better things to do that worry about what you say about him. He's taking WPTF under his wing, and when he picks a permanent morning show host, which he is still working on, he will take the station where Miller never could because he was so busy sucking up to Nancy Grace. And if the Spanish station has so many illegals, why haven't the cops or immigration shown up to do something about it yet? Those people should be left alone to do their jobs.

Just had to reply to comments about "That Zachary Guy". What he's doing may look odd if you're on the outside looking in, but let me tell you that that Zachary Guy knows what he's doing. He's one of the few really great Managers left in the business. Anyone who's worked with him or knows about his history knows what he can do, and that's make money! Phil Zachary is passionate about radio and is a good broadcaster which is a lot more than I can say about any of the current yay-hoos working for Clear Channel! He's tough and demanding and that's not always popular with those quagmired in mediocrity. Zachary may take some risks, but who ever achieved greatness without doing that? I feel certain that he has a plan and that he will ultimately succeed.

I don't know as much about the market anymore, but having been around "that Zachary Guy" in the past, I noticed with interest the News Director posting for his station on All Access, obviously written by Mr. Phil, and thought it needed a proper translation, which follows in parentheses...

News Director (Lackey Who Can Read), Raleigh/Durham

There are a number of news director/anchor openings posted here (This one alone has been posted three times in a week). So, why should you pay special attention to this one?

We’re (Phil is) NewsTalk 680 WPTF, the 50,000 watt heritage voice of Central and Eastern North Carolina (We're the old folks station and nothing else), and we’re (Phil is) seeking a News Director with on-air anchor responsibilities. This position ranks among the most critical roles in our (Phil's) 15-station group (you will be berated in public by Mr. Phil a lot more than the average employee). The News Director supervises a massive, daily news and information operation that’s unlike anything else in our (Phil's) market (It is one of the last havens for fake-voiced top 40 radio news jocks). In our (Phil's) determination, the following traits are essential for all interested candidates (unless you are talented and have a mind of your own, if not, move on to the next ad):

· Experience managing a fast-paced, aggressive, local radio news operation in an Arbitron-rated market. We currently employ seven full-time reporter/anchors (we have a lot of warm bodies and a plumber's van to get those bodies somewhere).

· An insatiable appetite for news and current affairs, not just national and international, but local (as they pertain to our coverage area) as well (you must cover what Phil tells you to cover).

· Lifestyle knowledge is important but secondary to a thorough understanding of politics, economics and the law, and what all three mean to the average consumer/citizen in North Carolina (you only know what Phil tells you to know.)

· A comprehension of news ethics and disciplines and, in particular, strict compliance with all federal laws pertaining to slander, equal time, etc. (you only know what Phil tells you to know)

· Superior editing and writing skills. (you can at least rip and read from the wire)

· As an on-air news shift is required, candidates should have a confident, well-paced delivery and be particularly aware of the nuances that help “sell” good, live, copy. (You should sound as if you belong in 1977 top 40 AM radio. Those sure were the good old days)

· Ability to relate to a target listener between the ages of 40 and 64. We are not a “hot talk” or “young-skewing” station. Instead, NewsTalk 680 WPTF is the proud, heritage voice of Central North Carolina. (We are unwilling to reach younger listeners. Shoot, you might even get to read the obituaries or host some sort of swap 'n shop show.)

· Tireless work ethic. Also, candidates should be comfortable in public and present an appearance and demeanor that are in keeping with a leading media outlet. This is, by no means, a studio-only position. (You should go to the gym with Phil every day)

· The ability to coach and direct talent in all of the above. (You hire who Phil tells you to hire)

· Uncompromising integrity. (You keep our shady business deals to yourself)

· Good sense of humor. (You laugh at all of Phil's jokes)

· A Bachelor’s Degree or higher (Rush Limbaugh, Walter Cronkite, and all those other idiot college dropouts aren't good enough for Phil)

Depending on the applicant’s skill set and track record, this position could be expanded to include further programming or operational duties (Phil is the PD, sales manager, janitorial supervisor, head of everything under the sun, but if something goes wrong, you're the scapegoat). It truly is an extraordinary opportunity in an equally extraordinary—and independently owned—company (we're cheap and we'll be bought out any day now), and our market is one of the best places to live in America (You may not be able to afford to live on what we will pay you). Interested candidates should send the following:

1. A cover letter expressing your interest and why you’re a good candidate for this position. (Pictures and memories of the good old days of Top 40 are recommended)

Blah blah blah...it goes on.

Seriously, I wish WPTF the best in their search. I just wouldn't want to be the poor sap who lands that gig.

I give you credit musicradio999, that's a pretty damn funny post...and there's some truth in there too.

I think you are overstating it just a bit...most people know that (Phil or no Phil) WPTF is Don Curtis' BABY. Nothing goes ON or OFF WPTF without Herman Munster's approval.

It is unquestionable that Ray Steele ended up hating Phil and I just wonder why....

Way to go musicradio 999. My guess is you are a former Curtis employee who couldn't cut it when the place cranked up. That is what makes these boards so great--total confidentiality for guys short on talent or balls or both.

Observation: That "Zachary Guy" is the person whose work put WRDU on the map 22 years ago, and led it to national recognition as a great rock radio station. Yesterday a bullet was shot through the heart of that station and it is dead. Zachary's leadership in helping build "Curtis in Raleigh" to the what it is now has been a big factor in killing off the legendary Home of Rock and Roll. It must be a very bitterweet feeling for him.

gee, sounds to me like "that Zachary guy" has multiple personalities posting his own kudos on the board here. Or maybe it's just me.

I see what looks like a lot of sour grapes here...I worked with Phil Zachary at Voyager, and have firsthand knowledge of his management skills. I wish more managers had his courage and dedication. WRDU under his guidance was one of America's finest radio stations.

Once again, GHattaway, I totally agree. It was first class all the way. Phil had passion, brains, and vision. You may not always have liked him, but you damn well respected him.

Oh, but don't underestimate Harlow! He and Phil were really tight in the Voyager Communications days, which makes this a battle to watch! Harlow is a brilliant people motivator, and happy people make a great product. God knows, CC Raleigh is such a mess that only a Harlow can possibly fix it. CC is very lucky to have him.

From what I know, Harlow IS a smart cat and he does have a deep knowledge of radio...

b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b BUT

he starts out with a pretty strong disadvantage. G-105 is still a monster, but the rest of the stations need some help. Chopping a few shares off 'QDR is a lot easier SAID than DONE.

Once Raleigh gets a load of Harlow's management style, he may wind up with the better talent in on-air and sales. His return to North Carolina is the subject of much discussion among the best in the business. Time will tell if CC has him spread so thin (he's over GSO and Ral) that he can't be as effective as he normally would be. I don't really know the Raleigh stations well enough to comment on their strengths and weaknesses, but I'd be willing to bet that Dick will make a difference.
