D. Geller: Atlanta Radio's Worst Commercials?

Merlin Berlin said:
I did go to Simply Direct Mortgage to re-fi my house because I shopped it and they dropped it. It was the biggest no-brainer in the history of man.

Hey, everyone! It's John Shibley!!

Q: How does this affect Q100 (at exactly 99.7)?

A: This is the most mentions of a Geller in an Atlanta Radio-Info.com thread since Geller left Q100.

What is this board's opinion of Tom Shane's Shane Co. ads? Here's an idea, Tom Shane can branch out by doing books on tape versions of "One Hundred and One Famous Poems" and "Tom Shane Narrarates The Bible".

I can hear it now ....

"... and the earth was void and darkness covered the face of the earth. But void is not what you'll find when you visit any location of The Shane Company."

I saw Tom Shane speak at the AIR Awards a few years ago and was kind of surprised. He's not the shriveled-up little man he sounds like on the radio.

I guess I'm not privy to some unwritten rule of social rules about communication. In my day of selling radio advertising one of the points of our sales pitch was: If you were separted from your loved one, which would you rather receive- - - a written letter... or a phone call where you could hear their voice?

The radio business was founded on a human being talking... using the voice... to convey a message to a listening human being. Normally more palatable are messages where two human beings are head talking in that commercial.

Maybe the Geller ads could be refreshed with new dialogue a bit more often, but I thought they are CLASSIC radio at work!!!!

Don't all radio commercials use the voice? The only alternatives I can think of are silence and just music or sound effects, and I can't remember hearing those types of spots on the radio.

If it WASN'T someone I wanted to hear from, I'd take the letter, if I had to take one or the other...

Another annoying commercial: Just Brakes. Their spots sound like they were written by a lawyer...just one long disclaimer.

"A friction re-line only replaces those parts that are designed to wear out. Damage to brake system components can cause a real brake system NIGHTMARE, easily doubling, tripling, or more the cost of repairs..."

That sound you hear isn't your brakes...it's money being shaken out of your pockets for "additional work" above the $99.95 that they kinda-sorta-but-not-really baited-and-switched you on...

Fox 5's I-Team busted Just Brakes a few years ago for fraudlent repair practices (doing more work than needed to get more money from their customers). I believe the state also launched an investigation as a result of the I-Team report.

It could be worse...it could be local TV, where ad time is so expensive only car dealerships and deep pockets political campaigns can afford to buy airtime. At least radio has some variety of advertisers.

Gawd, the folks on these boards sure are classy. Constantly complaining about how annoying damn near everything is.

The Mike & Stan bits come across to me as playful jabs at the competition, especially Tom Shane. It seems to me they are probably pretty effective---poach the customers of the well-known nationwide chain with the easily-identifiable-by-voice pitchman. Tom Shane comes across as stuffy and somewhat fake, while the Gellar's do their laid-back, joking, common-man schtick. Obviously it's pretty effective given its longevity, and they come off as regular guys in the local market.

Whenever I hear John Shibley, I change the channel immediately. It's the biggest no-brainer in the history of earth.

Other than changing the channel when Steak Shapiro is yelling at me.

Didn't Tom Shane start in ATL, back when he was "on the 11th floor, Gas Light Tower, 235 Peachtree in Downtown Atlanta" in the 1970s (and running ads that sounded exactly the same, except for the address)? Or was ATL his second market?

Anyway, Tom Shane was the "upstart" back then...primarily against the mall stores.

Mike and Stan come off as regular guys if you're a frickin idiot.

And I agree, those Shibley spots are about as bad as it gets. His monotone makes Wolf Blitzer appear to have inflection in his voice.

Their constant attacks on Tom Shane make me want to give my business to Shane. I don't think these attacks are flattering to geller.

I'm mildly afraid that if I don't use Lennox Financial, Shibley is going to come after me with a claw hammer. ???

Re: Shibley and Lennox Financial. It was because of his incessant 'no closing costs' commercials that I did, in fact, re-fi down to a 15 yr. loan with them about 3 years ago. No regrets whatsover. It was about the 5th or 6th closing I've been to in my life and it couldn't have been easier.

Re: Just Brakes. Yes, they have a horrible reputation for ripping off the client. The thing that I hate MOST about their spots, though, is the hideous jingle at the end "At Just Brakes... we really DO care!" Besides being utterly un-clever, jingles just rub me raw anyway.

There's another advertiser running rampant that I wish would cease and desist: Direct Buy. Try Googling "Direct Buy complaints" and you will find - literally - tens of thousands of complaints about what a ripoff they are. It truly bothers me to hear all these national jox who have been paid off to hawk this company. I'd be willing to bet most of them have never set foot inside the stores, and if they did, I'll bet the treatment (and prices) they got was NOT what the average Joe sees.

You've pretty much covered my take on this molehill of a subject.

About my only complaint is that Shane is almost too easy a target to lampoon.

I agree, I have long thought the D. Geller commercials are incredibly annoying, and I would never shop there just because of their insipid ad's. To me, if the only way you can promote your company is by making fun of the competition, it speaks very poorly for your own company.

Speaking of jewelry stores, is anyone else also annoyed by the Jared commercials? Their ad's (both radio & TV) make them sound like absolutely the SNOOTIEST place on Earth. Another example of an ad campaign absolutely driving me away from a store. I would never shop there, just because their ad's come across as so arrogant!

One last one from a few years back - Do you guys remember the ad's for PERIMETER FORD!?!?! They practically screamed into the mic for the entire 60 seconds! I vowed at that time I would never shop there just because their advertisements were so annoying!

I can't stand the one that says "Tell me about the discount, Harry" over and over and over. Thats the first half of the ad, while the second half is reciting the phone number 5-6 times in a row. I don't even know what product their pitching.

I have a general rule that if I hear the phone number read more than 2 times in a row, I'm changing the channel....

I hate that ad also.

"I am Elaine Mezzler and I will always shop Jared first." Thanks you snotty bee-otch.
