D&Z in the AM

Re: Let's wait 6 months/Rating Rant

Radio at one time used to follow the theory developed by John Nash “A Beautiful Mind”. It’s seems that radio forgot how works along the way. Now instead of everyone getting a date for the night. They all go home empty-handed. This market is wide for more formats, Modern AC, Classic Country, Acoustic Rock, 60’s-70’s based Oldies, FM-Talk, Triple AAA (don’t even count what Flinn did as a triple AAA, they had that station screwed up from day one). I remember one GM telling me Oldies or Triple AAA won’t work here because it’s been tried and failed. Don’t blame it on the format. WOTO must have had a playlist of 300 songs, they burnt the hell out of every song they played, no wonder it failed. I heard the same songs over and over again. And “The Pig” was never in the ballpark musically. I will say one thing about the Jack format. It reminds me of SUCCESSFUL small market stations that have a wide playlist with proper flow and mix.

I'll tell you a station that fits that mode, yet they are live AND local and they're not even on FM AND you can pick them up in the daytime here in Memphis.

950 AM KXJK out of Forrest City does a GREAT job with their music mix, they do live remotes that last more than a minute, they are committed to their community.

It's a great reminder of what radio USED to be, and could be again. I've had
a car button set at 950 for 10 years now....

Re: A followup

Hey, I started in Boston too (have you noticed how many transplants there are in this town?) WBZ sounds good up there, and when you are driving into the city in the morning, you can roll down your window here 1 of 2 things coming from the other cars, "Hey Robin, what's in the news?" or "While you're driving your car, we're driving 50,000 watts of power!"

I think people jump the gun was to quickly here. Do you give up a hobby after 3 month's because it's not turning out the way you want it? Anything worth working for, takes time.

And hey, isn't sleeping in your car @ 3am for 20min part of the glamour of radio? Who needs 8rs straight sleep, when you can get it in incriments of 2 to 3 hour shots?

jeez, I got more sleep in college....never thought I'd say that.
______________

Meep: I've always agreed with you on the Country arguement - sadly programmers here are terrified of doing it. Nobody remembers that that's the entire reason Sinclair had Froggy 94 on the air in the first place. Entercom sure never got it.

And, the greatest problem in this market is everyone is terrified to do anything except what's safe.

Oh... I thought this was about music radio... You of course are correct. WBZ has always been a class act up there. But I do miss hearing Casey Casem in AM Stereo back in the old days :)

I think that's what I was alluding to in saying leave 98.1 alone for a few books now that D&Z are there and the music is more mainstream. I mean, did anyone think R&B and Classic Rock could really co-exist in the same format/playlist? Now that Mr. Drum & Mr. Burks aren't there to get 'creative', maybe the station has a chance.

Builds character, young man. hehe. but think of it this way, I get to do a lot of AM listenening drifting off to sleep. Listening to 84 WHAS Louisville last night I got to hear weather bullitens every 10 minutes, including EAS activation. Apparently things got pretty nasty along the I-65 corridor around 2am. Now tell me, with everyone's computers going full blast, who can listen to AM at home these days?

Who needs sleep - I'll sleep when I'm pushing up daisies. :) Besides, the tireder I am, the better my show sounds (or is it the bigger my head swells?)... just askin for an aircheck session, ain't I?
______________

Yeah, especially after pulling their Wednesday night gig at Babes Showclub... I wonder if they will start doing "Breakfast with D&Z at the Young Avenue Deli"??
