Dan Gross- Smerconish and Yes Frontman Discuss the "C Word"

  • Thread starter Bringbackgoodradio
  • Start date

[EDIT-reference to deleted material]

You aren't worth my time or the time of anyone else on this board jerk.

The Schmerconish show was discussing the Fonda use of the "c" word which is about Freedom of speech rights..GET IT....

It has nothing to do with freedom of speech moron. I never advocated for the censorship of Smericonish. I was only comparing his show with that of Quinn's.

[EDIT] Now I'm done with this and with you. With a name like Simon I figured you'd be smarter.

[EDIT-inflammatory]

Look I didn't mean for this to start a huge debate. I just wanted to say that being new to this area- Smerconish and Kidd Chris and sometimes Preston and Steve are the best morning radio I've heard in this town so far....and from the looks of it- a friend who works in the buisness has told me the public agrees, since Preston and steve are 3rd and smerconish is 4th in the ratings for this market

Look I didn't mean for this to start a huge debate.

You didn't start anything. There is a lot of arrogance in this town. Welcome to Philadelphia. Can't wait to get the hell out of here.

Believe it or not, NY City people are much more cordial than Philly people.

It's a disgrace.

Hey Slant, yes, I kniow the show is not programed to the callers, And yes, it is supposed to be entertaining, and that's what makes it entertaining, the banter between the host and the callers. no callers, no banter, no banter, no call-in talk show. no to your question, they did not know what my question or comment was. they just got my name and put me on hold.what are you, the president of the smerconish fan club!!! are you his illegitimate son? what?

Agreed on all fronts and I can't stand New Yorkers (which should tell you where Philly rates with me).

That being said, I've listened to Smerconish for over a year now since moving to the area. He can be good. He can be interesting. But, as it stands now, he's neither. He spends too much time talking about "inside" subjects like 70's rock bands and "The Wire". If you don't like those things and are not in his little clique - you're out. And, he goes on and on with these subjects for an hour! Boring radio. Dreadfully, dreadfully boring radio. He comes off as arrogant and smug. He is condescending to his audience and even makes derisive comments about them.

Yet he also comes off as someone who likes what he likes and knows little about anything else. Not very intelligent. During a conversation with his crony, "Liberal Paul" a comment was made about awards given to musical groups during the 70's and the names of groups like "A Taste of Honey" were brought up. He'd never heard of them. At one point it was mentioned that Fergie was featured on the Grammys. He started to rant about how he couldn't stand this 'fat' reject from the Royal Family. Huh?!? What an idiot! Only later did his producer sheepishly mention to him that she was formerly of the Black Eyed Peas and not the princess. Hardly an intelligent program. Three times out of four, I end up tuning him out within 5 minutes. That didn't happen as much before they gave him free reign over the program.

His show, in its present iteration, doesn't fit that well into the rest of the day's programming and should be tweaked. Significantly.

Then there was the time he had Bono on the show and Smerco kept asking him if he was gonna get back with Cher...

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Thank you, be here all week...

Michael's tongue was firmly planted in his cheek when he went on his diatribe about Fergie. It's schtick. Hardly an intelligent listener. Here's your sign.

Here is great radio, 1 week ago smerconish was reading a story about a couple that was getting married. he fell in love with her because he was impressed with her ability to drink beer and pass gass, not through the mouth, if you know what I mean. the next day I turn the radio on, and he begins an interview with this guy about his being impressed with his wife's prowess in passing gas. that went on for 15 min. then takes 10 min of calls asking people what song they would associate with their relationship. his show has been eliminated from my morning routine at work. so I go down the right hand side of the dial to WURD, the black talk station. they're callers are talking about how the "white man" cannot be trusted etc etc. OOOOH HOW I MISS THE OLD WWDB Mr homer, Dominic Quinn, and the rest.

"Coming up next on WHAT: farting in the face of racism."

WURD is subject to its own set of preoccupations, as if it will solve the problems of the black community.
If they will email me via the board I can tell you which white men are responsible-save the 'rank-and-file' whiteys some grief. Let's just give WURD a certain beer seller as 'currency'-settle the whole thing.

I miss that Watley guy on 1540. He was great. I think they shot him (I'm not sure who 'they' is) and that was over 10 years ago. Anyone know where he went?

My two letter answer to your comment is: B S

I heard the whole thing. He didn't know who Fergie was. Didn't have the slightest clue. If you think it was schtick, then I pity you for being such a lackey for him.

Though I realize that the anonymity of this board precludes you from knowing anything about me, my education/experience or in which markets I have worked, take my word for it: I know enough to know schtick when I hear it. And to know when the host is clueless. On this topic, Smerco was the latter. Believe me, I know the difference. ::)

He's grown very, very boring lately...

I, too, listened to the entire exchange. It's not the first time Michael has feigned ignorance about someone to have the audience laugh at him. If you had a clue, you would realize when Michael is going into his schtick about certain topics. If you were as intelligent as you claim to be, you would realize that Michael is actually well rounded in his knowledge of different topics and subjects. Also, Michael has 4 kids. Do you really think he doesn't hear the music that they play?
[EDIT] As for the markets you worked, many non-intelligent people have lasted quite long in this industry. Longevity isn't a precursor to intelligence around here. It could be the less intelligent segment of society enjoys you because they view you as one of their own.
I guess your bashing of Michael helps your ego and helps you to believe what a superior person you are. It must really eat you up that this non-intellectual has a successful radio program and is sought after to fill in for national radio hosts while you have to bounce around from market to market. I feel sorry for you and the best way to state it is in those immortal words of Mr T: I pity the fool.

I thought it was Hillarious, and I am a huge Yes fan as well... just my 2 cents.. Anyways,

See You next Tuesday.....

Plooker Out....

I love how you are debating about all of the aweful stuff Michael does- yet you know every little detail about his show- it's like that famous line in Howard Sterns Private Parts "average radio listener listens for eighteen minutes a day. The average Howard Stern fan listens for - are you ready for this? - an hour and twenty minutes. How could this be? Answer most commonly given: "I want to see what he'll say next."
All right, fine. But what about the people who hate Stern? Good point. The average Stern hater listens for two and a half hours a day. But... if they hate him, why do they listen? Most common answer: "I want to see what he'll say next."

not making a comparison of the two- there is only one Howard Stern- but...I just thought it was funny

They don't play Fergie as bumper music. And the guy isn't that sharp. He knows what he knows and he likes what he likes. He does not strike me as someone who goes out of his way to experience things that are outside his comfort zone. And, he does come off as egotistical. Just as you do. Maybe that's why you're carrying so much water for him. Two peas in a provincial pod.

As I said, you know nothing about me. Certainly not about my level of education or experience. Given your commentary, I prefer it that way. If you were so "intelligent," you wouldn't need to make comments that get you censored by the board moderator.

In my present occupation, I have the opportunity to check out programming from markets all over the country. In the talk format, Smerco's show is as slickly produced as a big market show should be. But, more and more often, he comes off as condescending to his audience and is generally self-serving. Very egotistical. His subject selection is frequently out of step with what's going on in the rest of the world. There will be a day with a big political story breaking and Smerco is talking about some forgotten dinosaur rock band that hasn't been popular since 1979. Or a TV show that 0.5% of the audience listens to. Or some hyper-local yokel thing that pertains to only a tiny slice of the listenership. Then, he'll spend the whole hour on it! And, it's gotten worse over the past year or so.

If you are such a steady listener to his show and can't hear this, then it's you I pity.

Not really the case here because this guy is no Stern. In my case, the radio is on WPHT when I get in the car and I listen for a while. I used to listen for longer but more and more frequently, I punch him out after only a few minutes. The thing of it is that there aren't any other morning shows in the market that I care to listen to formatically, so I end up on am by default. More often than not, I leave Smerco to check out Imus on WABC (who is dullsville) then end up on KYW.

As another matter of comment, it seems that far too many posters on this Philly board are quick tempered and generally rude. Some of the most unpleasant folks on the entire Radio-info site. A critical comment about "one of their own" and we're in the 'red' already. Can't even have a decent discussion without immediately descending into personal slurs and general nastiness. I suppose it's just a reflection of the unfriendly people who inhabit this area.

Good thing there are no cars on this site because this Philly board would have the most crashes too.... ;D

So let me get this right, since Michael doesn't play Fergie bumper music, that is the proof that he has never heard of her? By your reasoning, I guess he's never heard of Beethoven, Mozart, Glenn Miller, Paul Anka or a score of other musicians, singers or groups.

As for someone who claims to only listen to his show for brief periods of time, you certainly express a knowledge of his show. You know his bumper music, you know that he ignores breaking national stories for inane local yokel topics and that he spends an entire hour on these topics. You can't have it both ways. You can't state that you listen to his program briefly daily, and then claim to be an expert on what it is he is broadcasting during his show.

As to my listening to Michael, there are times when I change the dial because of the topic being discussed. However, there isn't anyone on the radio who hasn't been tuned out by me.

As for your college education, I am sure you have graduated college. However, you come across as one of those egotists who think that because you have graduated college, you have earned the right to look down your nose at others. I, too, have graduated college, but I know that that accomplishment in and of itself does not make me a better person than someone who hasn't graduated college. As for the edit for inflammatory reasons, there was nothing vulgar in my post. However, it is up to the moderators to decide what they want posted on their board, so it's a moot point.

Your occupation could be that of a long distance truck driver, considering that they, too, have the opportunity to check out markets from all over the country.

As for anyone being egotistical, reread your own posts. You brag about your education, you brag about your occupation, and you have tried to put people down. You are the epitome of egotistical.

You mention rude posters, yet it was you that started the name-calling here, and now you want to portray yourself as the victim.
