Dayton's Ultimate Oldies Radio Expands Format

I enjoyed hearing Gene "By Golly" Barry on WAVI. He actually played, They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha Haa, once.
LOL! Good 'ol Gene..great guy he was! He understood and loved music as well as people. His rapport with his listeners made WING,WAVI and WDAO what it was...he would be appaled at the state of corporate radio today...it's no longer a people-oriented medium, just a piggy bank for the arrogant big boys at CC and the like!

(Right O.W.K???)

Hey, Limp:

Since you called me out, I'll answer you. And the answer might surprise you.

There are good companies...and there are bad ones. I'd actually agree with you that there are some big companies which appear to be doing more harm than good to radio right now. And I think there is a day of reckoning coming for those operators sooner, rather than later. It will be fun to watch that transpire.

But, not all of those companies are alike. I know...I've worked for good ones. In fact, I work for a good company right now that cares about their employees and offers benefits unheard of in some of the big consolidators.

When that day of reckoning comes, will radio go back to the way it was? Not likely. Voice tracking will not go away. But, the companies that end up with those radio stations, being better financed and not over-leveraged may go back to, among other things making sure there's someone in the building 24/7. They may also pay more attention to local news and information when it's needed. And that would be a good thing.

Contrary to what you, Limp...and what some of the posters here think, I am not what you think I am.

I just know what I know about radio programming...and will not back down in my beliefs. Because I know what works.

Oh yeah...I almost forgot.

I knew Gene Barry for almost 40 years. And to be certain, he saw even before his death at how the business was changing. And he was right, in a sense...that radio was more fun back then.

But one of the things that made it fun back then was, given that in Dayton in the early 60's, there were really only 7 radio stations in Dayton that mattered, it was possible back then to rack up unbelievable audience shares. That made it possible for DJ's to get huge audience, and I might add, make big money on the side. (One such now passed DJ told me it was possible back then for DJ's to make $25,000 a year doing record hops. And that was in early 60's cash. That kind of money would translate well into six figures today.)

What's changed things so much? There's now over 30 signals coming into Dayton. The audience has fractionalized. No DJ, no matter how good, can get those kinds of numbers today. Stations were purchased at hyper-extended values on the silly notion that a company could save it's way to prosperity. Then, the bubble burst...and lately, the economy tanked. Those who did it wrong, did it to themselves. I have no sympathy for those operators.

Surprised, Limp?

...no not really.

This insanity has been going on too long. The corporate head honchos may as well hang out the noose for themselves now. It's waiting....it's just a matter of time.

Jason,

or "One Who Knows" Radio Info doesn't seem to like the way I worded my earlier post because it looked like a direct statement to you. Sometimes it's better to just read and digest the comments on this borad instaed of finding the need to respond to each and every sentence as if it's an attack on your moral soul or beliefs. This forum is about opinions, they need to be read and appreciated, not degarded and dismissed. You have stated again and again and again your vast depth of knowledge of anything that has to do with radio. It's MY opinion that this forum would benifit more from your understanding of differing thoughts than your dismissal of those ideas.

I am counting on this post being flagged and deleted, as you did with my previous message. Someone has to say it, It might is well be me.

Hey PBJ, I love what you are trying to do, but for God's sake man, listen to what programmers are trying to tell you. As I read the thread, I see a wealth of free consulting being offered. You don't have to do anything you don't want to do, but IMO you should be appreciative and not defensive about many of these well intentioned tips.

To win in radio you need to be aggressive like Ja or was.

There were good things that company did...but some very bad stuff, too. (But, I'll grant you, the stories are legendary.)

Being aggressive in the right places and right times is good. Being aggressive just to be the market's
pain in the butt is not.

But, the one thing they did the best (especially in the oldies realm where I had the pleasure in one instance of having worked underneath some of the Critical Mass folks and even on rare occasions, the "Big Guy" himself) was solid, common sense programming basics. Like a certain company head once said, "radio isn't rocket science".
