Delilah gone from My 102.5

Offices purchase Sat radio to get what they want overhead, without the commercials, and they can write it off their taxes as an "Entertainment expense".
They're supposed to be WORKING! I couldn't work with that kind of distraction. There was a time when "beautiful music" was all you could hear at work, and I say go back to that.

And, surprise, Greenville is one of the few markets where YOU CAN!

As sutle as a flying mallet, I need to square this up. The only thing worse than Delilah is some over sensitive female defending her. Programming Fact: The Queen of Sap Stories has a certain value for soft AC's just beginning or looking for something different for their failing evening daypart. At the end of 2-years, any smart PD should be looking for a replacement. It's the shelf life of redundunt programming. There is no other way to look at it. MY 102 made a smart move by not renewing her, and a few years too late in doing so. MAGIC has the same mudhole...TESH...4-hours of telling everyone how stupid they are if they do this, without doing that....... MY 102 is far from where they could get, but they did make two smart discissions:
-the Format Flip, and the Delilah Drop!

Grown men(?), discussing repetitively,...MY 102. Newsflash: It's a "Chick Station"! Tube-top Rock for Bowlegg-id Cougars!
That format, as bad as it is, is only aired to satisfy those that sit down to pee!

While that may be true, unless some other station comes in to fill the void (and there IS a void), there isn't a whole lot else for "grown men" around here. Yes, Chuck is good, but if you want to hear anything new in the pop/rock world that's decent (and I say "decent" because the Planet plays just about anything but), then it's either this or B93.7. If you like country, well, then I guess you may be satisfied.

I would imagine there's other male listeners in the same boat, unfortunately. As I metioned in the Best Radio Market thread, Greenville is pretty embarrassing compared to Charleston or even Columbia. This market is begging for a decent rock station. And yet, the radio gods just must not have much pity for us.

And so, this will stay on my presets despite it's female "target" audience.
Except for 93.7, 97.7, and 102.5, as a male, there's nowhere for me to go as a male. The rockers are the only 2 male oriented stations in the market (maybe 92.5, I don't know), and they're an insult to the listener's intelligence, at least 93.3. I don't listen to 101.1 or their type of music enough to judge. I have a "news flash" for 93.3 - not all of their listeners (or, should I say, potential listeners) are rednecks. Just because we're in the south, and may be southern, doesn't mean we go for the loud, crappy, hard/driving rock they program and redneck, low class humor they seem to love. That's not the entire rock audience. I'd expect Entercom, of all companies, to know that. For crying out loud, we're in market #60. Yes, the market is very conservative and pretty southern (yes there are transplants, but the majority of the market is), but it seems diverse enough to support a balanced, well executed rock station that targets a broader audience. I'm in their target (M18-34) and have lived here most of my life, and can't stand it.

So, I'll keep listening to 93.7, 96.1, 97.7, and 102.5. 102.5 does play some decent rock occasionally. They're still

The only male oriented stations that I can think of here are 93.3 and 101.1. Maybe 92.5, I don't know. 101.1 is too old for me and I don't care for country. Like I've said for years, I hate 93.3 The Planet. Hate it. It's like the whole station is patterened after The Rise Guys, who are just an embarrassment. It's loud, crappy "rock" coupled with low-rent humor and presentation. Just afwul. Where are the Neon Trees? Gotye? Foster The People? Coldplay? Fun.? Kings Of Leon? Florence & The Machine? Killers? Oh, I guess that would be "sissy" rock using their mindset. They have such a "redneck" sound that it's impossible for me to listen to. Not everybody in the market's from the south, for one (although the majority is), and, duh...not everybody from the south is a redneck! It's senseless to be so one sided. As long as they live in their little FFDP/Pink Floyd/Linkin Park/Slipknot/Kid Rock/Foo Fighters/Aerosmith world, I won't be listening. And, yes, I'm in the target. I would love an alternative sounding rocker like WARQ/Columbia.

So, where am I to go. I guess 93.7, 97.7, or 102.5. The options are very, very limited. Hell, the music on 102.5 sounds less female oriented than 93.7.

Oh, just to add, another issue with The Planet is that they go as far back as the 70s and play too much 80s. A station calling themselves "New Rock" playing 70s is just idiotic. Leave the 70s and 80s to Rock 101....they're co-owned for god's sake!

Absolutely agree. And I actually believe that over the past 15 years or so, I wouldn't be surprised if it's close to 50/50 here as far as transplants. Almost everyone I work with is not from this area originally (think like 3 out of 10 on my "team" are from the Carolinas).

But no matter what the percentages are, I'd venture to say there's a lot more people who aren't redneck than are. Hell, isn't Greenville County considered the wealthiest in the state?

I just don't understand the thought process of keeping the Planet alive. It doesn't even do well in the ratings. The sad part is that a few of the bands you mentioned are among the better ones they play. They're some absolute trash as far as thrashing redneck rock on that station.

And, yes, 93.7, 97.7 and 102.5 are the only alternative and 97.7 is the only one that I would say may target a more male audience (but it's variety is a good enough balance that I hear women talk about it just as much). And for new music, 93.7 and 102.5 are the ONLY choices outside of country.

I'm no statistics expert, but keep in mind, GSP includes Greenville county, Spartanburg county, Anderson county, Pickens county, at least. There are transplants, but they are still outweighed by natives, by quite a large margin if you look at the market as a whole. Maybe they're doing well enough with their current approach - it's kinda popular with young guys out in the more rural areas, or with lower income, alongside country
It's just not fair that we're stuck with this - WARQ/Columbia and WKZQ/MYB are great rock stations, and WYBB/Charleston and WFXH/Savannah aren't that bad (the latter are active rock like The Planet, but programmed much better). Even 95 Rock in Augusta, GA on its limited signal is good. What makes this market so different that we can't get a somewhat fresh sounding rocker, especially since it's owned by a fairly large, progressive company like Entercom? Is this market just so much more conservative than these other ones that it can't handle any different?

As somewhat of a side note, WCOO/Charleston (105.5 The Bridge) is an awesome little rock gem. The ratings are never great, it doesn't get a ton of promotion, is never mentioned on these boards, but I love to listen to it when I'm down there. It's more of an AAA, which is a format I love. Charleston has 98 Rock AND The Bridge - lucky!

What's funny is that I wouldn't call The Planet a conservative station. They play a lot of "hardcore" crap that certainly wouldn't sit well with the Bob Joneses of the world.

As far as the population, I guess I just look at Greenville and see how much the area has grown exponentially over the years (and much of that growth is from transplants ... even transplants from outside the country) and even if the county isn't the only part of the GSP market, it certainly has the biggest pull as far as advertisers go.

The thing is The Planet doesn't even do that well in the ratings. You'd think they'd want to try something new. And even if they stuck around, I still think there's room for a more balanced rock station around here -- particularly in the new rock area. And I think they'd probably crush The Planet.

You're exactly right about Greenville being the biggest advertising pull. That's the hub of the market. Spartanburg second, Anderson 3rd. I'd love to see Entercom relaunch 93.3 and the rock format - music intensive, call it 93-Rock or something similar. Polish it up a little more. Of course, that'll never happen.

93.3 played AC/DC's "You Shook Me All Night Long" this evening. Seriously.

On another note, I wonder why MY still isn't playing Gotye. They play that promo for SIUTK but never play the song. I very rarely hear it on B-93.7 (reminds me of the way they did with "Pumped Up Kicks" - hardly played it until after it had been a hit)

Yeah, I wondered the same thing. It's very strange for them to keep running that promo but never play the song.

Heard them play it this morning before 7am!

Good to hear that they played it outside of the overnight feed (at least, I'm assuming this after the national feed ended).

I've got to hand it to MY, I really think they did turn some kind of corner about 2 weeks ago. They've been sounding great. Aside from a few songs, they're almost sounding like an adult-leaning CHR as opposed to even just Hot AC. I can actually listen to them for longer periods of time without cringing. As long as they can keep up with new adds, I think they could do well.

Not sure what made them seemingly come to their senses, but I won't complain.

OK, listening this afternoon, maybe adult-leaning CHR was a bit of a stretch, but definately sounding like the Hot AC they at least seem to claim to be with their "fresh" tag.

I agree! The sound has really changed for the better. Seems like they have given up on trying to hang up on the old AC audience and trying to sound like Magic. They sound much more focused. As long as they keep up with new adds, I'll be listening much more.

Yeah, they've really gotten it together over the last few weeks. I was very pleasantly surprised to hear Rihanna's "We Found Love" during the 1p hour on Wednesday. I still think they could play a few more currents and rotate them more frequently in their clocks, but they're absolutely moving in the right direction. Good for them.

I agree that rotating some of the currents more often would be good, but I'm not going to complain. They can't get much more cutting edge than the stuff like new Adele, Fun., Gotye, etc.
They were also very quick on Katy Perry's "Part Of Me", putting it in heavy rotation.

I was listening to them this morning, and it seems like they may not be trying to get the "at work" crowd as much, either (unless someone wants to play it on an individual basis) - I don't see this stuff like LMFAO, All American Rejects, Usher/Pitbull, Shinedown, Gym Class Heroes, Fun., etc going over well as background music in most businesses anymore...Magic pretty much has that title, now.

You know Bob Jones has a conservative station of his own, don't you?

Classical/beautiful during the day, sermons in the evening, sacred at night and on Sunday. With Christian messages prinkled throughout.

Yes, I know that. Was just being sarcastic in that people call this a conservative market and couldn't handle a more "progressive" station in terms of playing newer/alternative pop/rock. But The Planet's playlist should be more offensive to the conservative community than anything considered "cutting edge".

Conservatives have been known to rock out pretty seriously from time to time, just as an FYI. Don't know that Delilah has ever rocked hard on the air, although when she says to listen to the music she doesn't mean there is a story somewheres. Too bad ya lost her, but at least her program isn't a daily honey-do list of instructions. :-*

Freqdev please forgive me for adding to this pile of road apples, but Silkie,...Milkie,...Satin-ie,...shiney velvet siren of all that's good, and proper. Sweatheart!...in your lifelong cursade to successfully parallel park, let me deliver to you a keen gasp of the obvious: MY 102 had to painfully wait to get outta the contract, but they did the right thing, and ankled the Queen of Sap.
Regarding the 7p-12m daypart, the station was loosing their ass! With Tesh across the tracks, and slightly up the dial, he was beating her in the ratings, and his all was to tell listeners how stupid they are if they do this, without doing that...first!
Intelligence for your life? Right!...and I own Yanni CD's! If you are going to defend something,...it needs to have some starch.
