Except for 93.7, 97.7, and 102.5, as a male, there's nowhere for me to go as a male. The rockers are the only 2 male oriented stations in the market (maybe 92.5, I don't know), and they're an insult to the listener's intelligence, at least 93.3. I don't listen to 101.1 or their type of music enough to judge. I have a "news flash" for 93.3 - not all of their listeners (or, should I say, potential listeners) are rednecks. Just because we're in the south, and may be southern, doesn't mean we go for the loud, crappy, hard/driving rock they program and redneck, low class humor they seem to love. That's not the entire rock audience. I'd expect Entercom, of all companies, to know that. For crying out loud, we're in market #60. Yes, the market is very conservative and pretty southern (yes there are transplants, but the majority of the market is), but it seems diverse enough to support a balanced, well executed rock station that targets a broader audience. That format, as bad as it is, is only aired to satisfy those that sit down to pee!
While that may be true, unless some other station comes in to fill the void (and there IS a void), there isn't a whole lot else for "grown men" around here. Yes, Chuck is good, but if you want to hear anything new in the pop/rock world that's decent (and I say "decent" because the Planet plays just about anything but), then it's either this or B93.7. If you like country, well, then I guess you may be satisfied.
I would imagine there's other male listeners in the same boat, unfortunately. As I metioned in the Best Radio Market thread, Greenville is pretty embarrassing compared to Charleston or even Columbia. This market is begging for a decent rock station. And yet, the radio gods just must not have much pity for us.
And so, this will stay on my presets despite it's female "target" audience.

I'm no statistics expert, but keep in mind, GSP includes Greenville county, Spartanburg county, Anderson county, Pickens county, at least. There are transplants, but they are still outweighed by natives, by quite a large margin if you look at the market as a whole. Maybe they're doing well enough with their current approach - it's kinda popular with young guys out in the more rural areas, or with lower income, alongside countryawp69 said:Absolutely agree. I just don't understand the thought process of keeping the Planet alive. It doesn't even do well in the ratings. The sad part is that a few of the bands you mentioned are among the better ones they play. They're some absolute trash as far as thrashing redneck rock on that station.
And, yes, 93.7, 97.7 and 102.5 are the only alternative and 97.7 is the only one that I would say may target a more male audience (but it's variety is a good enough balance that I hear women talk about it just as much). And for new music, 93.7 and 102.5 are the ONLY choices outside of country.

You're exactly right about Greenville being the biggest advertising pull. That's the hub of the market. Spartanburg second, Anderson 3rd. I'd love to see Entercom relaunch 93.3 and the rock format - music intensive, call it 93-Rock or something similar. Polish it up a little more. As far as the population, I guess I just look at Greenville and see how much the area has grown exponentially over the years (and much of that growth is from transplants ... even transplants from outside the country) and even if the county isn't the only part of the GSP market, it certainly has the biggest pull as far as advertisers go.
The thing is The Planet doesn't even do that well in the ratings. You'd think they'd want to try something new. And even if they stuck around, I still think there's room for a more balanced rock station around here -- particularly in the new rock area. And I think they'd probably crush The Planet.
