E-skip 7-24

nd2023

Banned
Currently getting many Florida stations from NJ. MUF over 144 mHz according to APRS. Many HD decodes. Strongest e skip of the season, been going on over 2 hours.

I live in Oklahoma City, and believe I heard KLUC in Las Vegas briefly just now. Couldn't get a positive id but "old school lunch" i heard them reference.

Here in Ohio, I was just getting some e-skip from Virginia and N. Carolina. I'm a bit puzzled that I was getting an FM station from Charlottesville, VA via e-skip here as I thought that would be too short a distance at about 400 miles for FM e-skip....very interesting. I did a video bandscan which I'll upload later.

Presently, KTCS-FM Fort Smith, AK is fighting local regular WEZN Bridgeport, CT on 99.9FM here in Bergen County, NJ. I found out about this opening about 45 minutes ago, wish I found out sooner. I hope this continues for at least another hour.

I guess it's our turn in central NC now. There's a big ol' cloud centered over Tennessee now (715PM Eastern) with MUF approaching 200 MHz.

After we had a furious line of thunderstorms blow through the Raleigh area around 4-5PM, saw the cloud re-forming. Sat in my truck and heard:

KDAM 94.3 Yankton SD
KQDS 94.9 Duluth MN (adjacent-channel to one of the stations I maintain, 94.7 WQDR!)
KWQW ("WOW-FM) 98.3 Des Moines IA
KKLS 104.7 Sioux Falls SD

Also heard a Michael Savage affiliate on 92.7 that I could not ID, mixing with another station doing obituaries with several mentions of "Algona" (Iowa?).

The E-Skip opening may be closing :'( Now WODE-FM Easton, PA. is challenging WEZN-FM Bridgeport, CT. on 99.9FM. Unfortunately, I know who will win this battle. I'll be stuck with WEZN on 99.9FM after the event is over :p BTW, Easton, PA. is not a tropo regular for my region.

Here in Knoxville, TN we are hearing FRENCH stations all over the FM dial! I wish I could ID these to figure out which part of Canada I'm getting.

Caught the first of these posts before I had to head into work, so I checked out the dial here in beautiful Fredericksburg, VA on the Sony XDR-F1HD

Caught HD-only: WPOI calls via HD over local (less than 5 miles away) WBQB, WDBO-FM's HD calls over local AM translator on 96.5, and WJRR-FM's HD offerings over local WWDC's analog signal.

Big catches:

Caught what appeared to be Radio Reloj on 100.5. The 'RR' morse code signal was beeping through WHHZ/Newberry, FL

WXTB/Clearwater

WRUM/Orlando

A very rough, but listenable WCTQ/Sarasota.

WKTK/Crystal River

Haven't gotten to see whats out there after 5pm local time, but I'm guessing by the time I get home there won't be much time to ride on the e-skip train.

Radio-X

From all the E Skip so many of us have experienced today and how the maps was loaded with such high frrquency Es clouds in big clusters too most of the day, I'd say today alone made up for all the lack of E Skip all season!

At about 7pm this evening: From here in Northwest Arkansas, I IDed Fresh 94.7 in DC and ESPN 97.3 in Southern New Jersey.

In East Kenutcky, I've gotten SEVERAL (like 20) stations all from Oklahoma and Kansas in particular. Very fun for me! Not sure my friends are fascinated, though, haha!

Here in NE New Jersey I heard 94.9 KHKN Maumelle (Little Rock), AR & 94.5 KKLR Poplar Bluff, MO.....There was also Country on 93.3 & 101.7 but could not ID......I'm 20 miles NW of the NYC FM's and many were filled with static which is not the normal around here.

Central Va around 7 PM to 7:45 PM EST:

KWDQ 102.3 Woodward OK running over 102.3 WZGN Charlottesville

KKZU 101.7 Elk City OK fairly clear for about 15-20 minutes

All faded by 7:45 and back to normal.

That was all I could find. Nothing out of the ordinary higher on the band. Lower seemed "scratchy" but nothing ID-able.

Any Reports from California from this??

Oddly I was getting a station from Lubbock TX in Fresno CA around 6:30 tonight. 97.3 Yes! FM. I have received 95.5 KLOS a couple times in the past as well as Sacramento, San Francisco and Chico CA stations but this is by far the furthest I've ever picked up.

I first learned of this E-Skip opening around 6:30PM, so unfortunately I arrived late to the party :(

The bulk of my receptions came from Arkansas. They did not obliterate any strong locals, perhaps they did earlier. I definitely heard KTCS-FM Fort Smith at 99.9FM and another on 98.3FM, but I'll have to listen to my recording to determine if it caught the ID.

This was pretty much a nationwide event. I know this has been asked before, but do we know what atmospheric conditions were present over this country today that allowed for this awesome event to occur?

Yeah, Californians were getting west Texas this evening.

After my opening from Kansas to the east closed around 7:20, a western path opened a couple of hours later.

Really?? I was listening to my walkman nothing, I forgot to time it..

From Vallejo, CA

Here in Southeastern Wisconsin, I Listened (& recorded) stations from Florida to New Mexico from about 6-8pm. I've hit the radio locator limit, so I'll have to go over the remainder of the recordings tomorrow.

My Grundig G2 came in handy.

I had 112 stations today, 8 in HD, and 2 translators. Shortest skip 530 miles, longest 1380 miles. From central NJ.

The e-skip started out strong at 9 in the morning to Florida, specifically south of I-4. Many strong enough to show call letters in HD, some strong and steady enough to completely decode in HD. Miami was in for the entire opening, other areas faded in and out. Faded out around 1 in the afternoon. The skip returned at 4:30 in the afternoon, weak at first, then all hell broke loose. Almost all of the local stations were not just unlistenable, they were GONE! Every frequency 3-5 stations deep, not including locals.
