Easy 93.1 seems to be official folks....or is it?

As they are playing 24 Christmas music, it's announced between songs "thanks for listening to South Florida's new Easy 93.1, be sure to join us after Christmas for continuous soft and easy favorites, South Florida's new Easy 93.1" Do you still think this is a diversion? Stunting? ??? ::)

I say, it's a smokescreen.

No, I think it's legit. After all, have you seen on the TV commercials promoting "Holiday 93.1?" I don't think they would spend all that $$ to get people to listen, tell them it will be "Easy" and then go dance. Big waste of money.

My guess is that the demo that responds to the "holiday" music would be the same that responds to a soft AC

Christmas music draws from everything from classic rock to Spanish pop...so I would not make a conclusion based on what the music is compatible with.

I think it is more likely that they are promoting on TV because they want to fragment the "other" Christmas station which is a good side benefit of a stunt period.

no way this is the real thing. why would you put a station on that will hurt coast, plus doesnt soft ac go after the older people who were the same as wtmi? no money in classicl, no money in soft ac.

i think this is a stunt for the real format coming after christmas music is over, and it cant be soon enough. how many times can they play frosty the snowman?

Soft AC seems to make sense, given WLYF's #1 status, and Cox's success with the format elsewhere. It's no coincidence "continuous soft and easy favorites" is the same tagline used by Tampa's WDUV.

The difficult part will be luring WLYF's listeners away. Christmas music may be one way to do just that.

There is no way they would be buying TV time to direct listeners to the station AND promoting the new Easy 93.1 if it weren't going to be Easy 93.1 after the holidays. Plus Christmas music would have been a horrendous segue for the young demo that would listen to a Pure Dance station.

Easy Listening / Soft AC makes sense if Cox is looking to erode away some market share from Clear Channel WLYF in order to improve Cox co-owned WFLC's overall bottom line. Cox has had success in the Tampa Bay market with soft adult contemporary WDUV, so this may be a good move although I still believe hit based, CHR, hot AC or talk will also perform very well in Florida's largest radio market.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is the format flip. Facebook page and logo already in motion.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Easy-93/159851307389438 - Here's something quite amusing: Rob Sidney, Director of Programming and Operations of WLYF - 101.5 Lite FM is a fan! LOL

I don't find this to be a smart move,if anyone can remember that Rob Roberts did this in 1998 and turned 103.5 Planet Radio into a VERY SHORT LIVED Soft Hits Planet 103.

Actually, WLYF is owned by Lincoln Financial. It is too "live and local" to be a Clear Channel property!

Thank for for reminding me. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I said Clear Channel.

A soft A/C will pull listeners from both WLYF and WMXJ not so much WFLC. Watch and see.

Agreed. The idea is to sandwich WLYF between COAST and the new Soft station. If the startegy works out perfectly for Cox WFLC will not only not get hurt...they could rise to #1 25-54.

That being said WLYF is IMO one of the best programmed ACs in the country. Because they are softer, older, and have a local vibe compared to most ACs they will be less vulnerable to such an attack than ACs would be in many other markets. Plus the new station will likely only take away WLYFs 55+ audience while leaving the 25-54 intact.

It's amazing how WLYF has evolved through the years without giving up their heritage call letters. I remember the beautiful music days, then the last time I heard them they were doing Disco Nights, somehow it works. All the others: Joy, etc fell by the wayside.

Consider how many shops and stores leave 93.1 on their radios for the holiday music and simply leave them on for the new format?

Has 101.5 LITE-FM ever done all-Christmas? When I was a yearly visitor to Fort Lauderdale at Thanksgiving during the 90s, they'd play Christmas music on Black Friday "to get you in the Holiday spirit!" They'd even give traffic reports from every mall in South Florida! After midnight on Black Friday, they returned to the regular AC format.

As beautiful music WLYF in the 70s, they'd play 24 hours of Christmas music from 12 Mid Dec 24 to 12 Mid Dec 25 IIRC. :)

WLYF is the closest thing to a "full service" station in the market. Music that's "non-offensive" to most people, news in the morning and they have no problem breaking in with important info, traffic reports even on the weekends, live jocks (I bet Cox wont do that.)
Rob and the staff will be just fine from this attack.
