Energy PD exits

From all access:

KNGY (ENERGY 92.7)/SAN FRANCISCO PD CHRIS SHEBEL exits

I have no idea why, he really made a go of it on that small signal.

Two thoughts come to mind:

1. Better offer
2. Handwriting on the wall

There's a strong possibility that this was a planned exit. Maybe he planned to start the station, get it on it's feet, and then maybe go to another market and do the same thing there.

We'll know much more soon.
______________

It's very possible.

I tuned in during the last few days, and Matt "The Bratt" Derrick hasn't been on. Someone told me that the name was removed from the website. I checked and noticed that too.
______________

"Handwriting on the wall"

I work at the station, if this is meant to imply that something is afoot at Energy that is not positive, it couldn't be more off the mark. We're not going anywhere!

*shrug*

I just posted the two thoughts that usually come to my mind when a PD makes a quick, unforeseen exit.

Station owners don't always tell the people that work there when they've put handwriting on the wall, you know.

Yes, I know and understand that, but I am high up enough in the pecking order to know of which I speak. The station's health is fine.

I stand by my original post as being nothing more or less than what I said it was: My first two thoughts when a PD suddenly exits.

You appear to be overreacting.

THAT'S THE PROBLEM..

ENERGY IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE; AS IN RATING.

THE MUSIC IS TOO NARROW (GAY CROSSOVER POP HOUSE).

EXPAND WITH DRUM & BASS, TECHNO, TRANCE, JUNGLE, DOWNTEMPO, ACID, BREAKS ..

I would point out to you that ratings aren't necessarily the definition of success at a radio station (though who doesn't want them, right? Right.), however, since you brought them up they look pretty good. Perhaps you don't have access to demo, daypart and zip code breakdowns.

But, as I said there are other criteria that make ours (and others) successful stations in this market. There is plenty of thought and research behind a constantly fine-tuned and considered playlist and not to point out the obvious because music is a subjective thing, but you can't please everyone, particularly within a niche format.

If you can demonstrate how the changes you personally want would serve our audience better, perhaps increase listenership (and remember it is a business!) and ad buys from small and large advertisers, then I would highly recommend you email this info to the listener comments address on the official station website. Every comment is read by station management.

Now I'm jumping off the Energy soapbox.

He was a lot of fun. Oh well. I hope he does well wherever he goes next. The new person that is on during his former time slot is quite good too. It'll take some getting used to.

Even though he had a lot of issues with me, I still respected him as someone in the radio industry.

I totally agree.

You don't get rid of a PD unless something isn't right (or at least the mgmt doesn't think it's right.)

Although 92.7 may be doing well in the San Francisco zip codes in the 18-34 age bracket, it's going to take a lot of work to bill the local sales revenues they'll need to justify a station valuation that the investors who bought it can make money on by, in turn, selling it to someone else. The current investors paid something like $38 million for that station and given the current valuations in the market, they'd probably have to be turning a profit of $5 or $6 million a year at a bare minimum for the investors to be close to happy with the sale price they would get. And although they're probably running the station pretty cheaply, that's still a lot of revenue to generate from local sales. Keep in mind that even a station like Alice generates probably $15-17 million in total revenues a year. Star is probably even a bit higher than that. So 92.7 really has its work cut out.

My guess is that the GM and investors got nervous that things weren't happening fast enough and pulled the plug on Chris while there was still time to hire someone more aggressive on the promotional and marketing side... the street effort, if you will. I personally think it's a losing battle, no offense to what Chris and the folks there have done... it isn't a bad station at all. It's just not a GREAT station and even if it WERE amazing, the basic realities of the signal and the niche format make it tough to generate top notch returns for investors.

What's the problem? Can't use lower case letters?

Or maybe "Phoenix" is back under a new name.

THE CHANGE SHOULD BE MADE WITH THE MARKETING DIRECTOR BEFORE THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR.

CHRIS SHEBEL ONLY CONSULTED ENERGY IN PHOENIX FOR A FEW MONTHS BEFORE HE MOVED-ON TO HIS NEXT PROJECT; WHICH WAS ENERGY SF.

PERHAPS CHRIS WILL GO TO XM OR SIRIUS. ?

Just curious... is it MY silliness to which you're referring? I hope not, because if you think I'm smoking something, I would go back and do your due diligence and check your facts (including ones you might not know)and stop just smoking the Energy 92.7 dope that you're passively inhaling.
