Neither does Pax, but it hasn't stopped its Orlando or Jacksonville stations from airing the telethon.

I just heard that here in Ft. Wayne, IN WANE-TV actually set a new record with about $585,000. I think this is amazing considering all that's going on in the world right now. Any other markets actually set a record?

I know I already replied to this already, but I just thought of a few things:

According to the affiliate list at mdausa.org, 51 Love Network affils are affiliated with CBS -- the question is: did they show tennis live and bump Jerry, or did they delay tennis to late night (or pre-empt it altogether)?

I think there are some stations that do both a CMN and MDA telethon each year. In Vancouver BC, Global (the former BCTV) doesn't show the MDA telethon, of course, but they do two big telethons each year -- the "Variety Club Show of Hearts" (benefitting the BC Variety Club) and the CMN telethon (for the BC Children's Hospital). Both telethons feature key news talent from Global BC(TV), and are rather high-budget (though the Variety club is budgeted higher, especially since Bob McGrath of "Sesame Street" appears every year).

Apparently not -- no Fox O&Os (other than Fox-owned UPN affil WWOR) carried the telethon this year.
Edited by rugrats1 on 09/07/05 03:33 AM.

This is where that "The artists appearing on this telethon..." bit comes in. I always thought the telethon itself doesn't pay the talent anything (though someone might underwrite airfare and hotels as need be).

Speaking of the Show of Hearts, longtimers around Northwest Washington and Lower Mainland BC (I am one) remember the days when it was held at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Now that was a show. Unfortunately, while it's still a 22-hour affair, the show now consists of local cut-ins surrounding pre-taped concert shows you'd probaly see or already have seen ad infinitum on your friendly neighborhood PBS station or some cable channel.

Ah, for the want of seeing Rolf Harris as 'Jake the Peg' (Deedle deedle deedle dum)with his extra leg (Deedle deedle deedle dum) just once more. Or McGrath with a stage full of deaf kids. Or the general enthusiasm that comes when Dal Richards strikes up the band for the tote. Can't we do a telethon like that anymore? Sadly, I know the answer - unless you're Jerry Lewis, probably not.

Do you have any idea of the scheduling nightmare that would be for all the performers who were booked for the Labor Day telethon? It'd be a case of throwing a party in which almost no one shows up...
______________

WWOR has carried the telethon for as long as I can remember.
______________
