Fire coverage thread

Anyone have the lowdown on what was damaged on Mt Wilson? On one of the live cam feeds you could see a building on fire... but not sure if it was a building that was actually being used.

Reportedly there's another wildfire this time in Ventura County in Oxnard.

And now Southern California Edison is being sued over their response to the 2025 LA County fires.

I don't know about Palisades, but I do know they had an effective buffer in place in the Eaton fire that had worked in 1993 and several other fires since. Altadena was not in the fire zone. That was a total freak thing. These houses that were destroyed had been there for 70 years or more. Lake Avenue was miles away from a fire zone.
Pasadena resident checking in.

Agree with the analysis here re: Altadena. Have spoken with many friends and we all feel the same way ... you'd never consider the parts of Altadena decimated to be in the fire zone.

While Mayor Bass etc are getting a lot of flack for the Palisades fire, we're going to have to circle back and look critically at LA County's response in Altadena. The Supervisor for us - Barger - is quite good and has taken control post fire. But the majority of the homes that burned up there did so during the day on Wednesday when the winds had calmed. The fire department should have been able to mount a better defense - even if they couldn't save all the homes, I am unable to comprehend that they couldn't save some.

The one Altadena home I know about burned between 4 and 5AM Wednesday morning. Most of their neighborhood was gone before the sun came up.

The Aldi grocery store burned in the afternoon. No wind, but also no water pressure.

Live on KCAL-9 right now: the building at the bottom of an AM transmitter tower is on fire. Don't know which station it is. The fire is being described as a brush fire in the Santa Clara river bottom in Ventura.

So I was DX'ing KNX's AM frequency 1070 on my drive home in the Bay Area around 6:59pm. Somehow, 1070 was carrying audio of the BBC News Channel (TV, not the BBC World Service radio feed) without a TOTH ID at 7:00.

Now, KNX AM has returned to normal programming.

I see upthread some radio transmitters caught fire. But I'm skeptical that would have to do with an AM station simulcasting an international TV channel.

Among the things destroyed by the Palisades fires: The works of 20th century classical music composer Arnold Schoenberg:

That's a rather devastating loss for the classical music world.

Someone, somewhere has got to have made copies of at least SOME of the lost material?

Here’s more on the Oxnard fire.

That's not accurate.

The evacuation order was not expanded west of Lake Ave until something like 4:30AM on Wednesday. The homes lost to the fire west of Lake which is a shockingly large number considering the distance from Eaton Canyon and the initial damage we saw Tuesday evening, burned after that evac order was issued - Wednesday during the day.

I'm just telling you what my buddy who lost his home told me. His house was east of Lake.

This is a statement from Universal Music over the Palisades and Eaton fires.

Universal Music Group has canceled all of its Grammy-related events, including the Saturday artist showcase and the Sunday after-Grammy party, and will use the money instead for Los Angeles wildfire relief.

“Today we have cancelled all of our Grammy-related events, including the Artist Showcase and After-Grammy Party and will redirect the resources that would have been used for those events to assist those affected by the wildfires,” a statement from the company reads. “Our deepest gratitude goes to the first responders and emergency personnel, who continue to perform heroically.

“L.A. is home to so many of us,” it continues. “We are committed to helping and supporting the music community, our artists, our teams and the people of Los Angeles get through this horrific episode.”

For this post, I was trying to think of some other disaster that came even remotely close to the ongoing LA firestorm, and I couldn't.

It's all kinds of bad, and nothing in recent history can even come close to the massive scale of destruction (Paradise was the next, very distant closest thing, and, as I believe I've said earlier up thread, despite being so deadly with 85 confirmed dead, it is is a small blip compared to this. The death toll alone, currently at 25, is bound to go much higher than 85).

Cal matters has an interactive map on the current sizes of the Palisades, Eaton and Hurst fires if they happened in other parts of the state. Keep in mind other parts of the state has to prepare for the day the same exact scenario Los Angeles is facing today hits other areas.

Los Angeles DWP is sued for the same reasons that SoCal Edison is being sued for their handling of the wildfires in the county.

Apparently there are persons of interest that are detained for arson charges. Let's hope this is not the case but given where we are now this will be mentioned as a contributing factor on the fires.

The only destruction was a small shack with some two way radio gear. Everything else up there is fine.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was NOAA's National Weather Service transmitter shack. Has anybody noticed that 162.55 MHz (KWO37) has been off the air? For something that's considered critical infrastructure (part of the area's EAS network), it's a little late in the game for its continuing absence to be down to a continuing power outage.
